Mikel Arteta given recovery timeline for Arsenal star after injury blow

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has discovered when he could welcome back a highly-rated player who’s suffered an injury blow.

Arsenal edge past Olympiacos with West Ham up next

The Gunners edged past Greek Super League champions Olympiacos in midweek thanks to goals from Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka, with Arsenal maintaining their 100 per cent start in Europe.

Martinelli opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a simple tap in after Viktor Gyökeres’ shot struck the post and rolled kindly into the Brazilian’s path. However, while you might’ve expected the floodgates to open thereafter, it ended up being a tense evening for Arteta’s side — who squandered numerous opportunities to extend their lead.

David Raya was also forced into a spectacular one-handed save to deny an equaliser from ex-Wolves forward Daniel Podence. The Portuguese winger caught a low cross perfectly on the volley from eight yards, only for Raya to instinctively fling himself to his left and divert the ball over the crossbar with an outstretched hand.

Leandro Trossard and captain Martin Odegaard, who was praised for his excellent display against Olympiacos, also missed chances to double Arsenal’s advantage before Saka finally put the game beyond doubt in added time.

Arteta initially rested Saka for tonight, perhaps in an effort to manage his fitness with the England international coming back from a hamstring problem, but his late inclusion turned out to be vital.

We’re certain to see much more of Saka given summer signing Noni Madueke is out for several weeks with a knee injury, giving Arteta precious few alternatives, with the forward joining Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Piero Hincapie on the treatment table.

Arteta was also dealt a scare when Gabriel Magalhaes was forced off for Cristhian Mosquera, receiving treatment on the pitch, but Arsenal’s boss has since given a reassuring update.

With Arteta appearing hopeful that Gabriel will be available for Arsenal’s crunch Premier League clash against Nuno Espírito Santo’s West Ham this weekend, their last match before the international break, things are a bit more uncertain with Hincapie.

The Ecuador international suffered an injury blow to his groin recently and has been unable to feature — playing just one minute since joining the club on loan from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer.

Hincapie is still waiting to make his Premier League debut for Arsenal, with a timeline on the defender’s return to action now emerging.

Piero Hincapie targeting October return for Arsenal

According to insider ‘HandOfArsenal’ on X, the 23-year-old is hoping to return to the fold this month, if all goes to plan, though a specific date hasn’t been specified just yet.

The versatile defender is currently on a season-long trial at the Emirates, as he looks to show sporting director Andrea Berta that Arsenal should trigger the £45 million buy option in his contract.

Hincapie was a regular under Xabi Alonso during Leverkusen’s historic 2024 double-winning season, where they went the entire domestic campaign unbeaten, and was among the club’s key starters last season — making 45 appearances in all competitions.

The South American, dubbed an “absolute beast” by members of the media, played at centre-back, left-back and even left-midfield on two occasions last term — and it will be interesting to see how he fits into Arteta’s plans moving forward.

Arsenal already have a stacked defence and Mosquera has been particularly impressive as a new recruit, so Hincapie is facing a battle to get in the side.

"No no no" – England star begged Thomas Tuchel not to play in new position

It’s fair to say that Thomas Tuchel is still attempting to find the right formula in charge of England. The former Chelsea boss has recalled some old names and introduced some fresh faces, but needs time to get the best out of his options.

His most recent squad once again caused plenty of debate. There were places for Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson and Ezri Konsa, but Harry Maguire, Phil Foden and Trent Alexander-Arnold have been forced to watch on from home.

Whilst his decisions have split opinion, there’s no denying that Tuchel is not afraid to make bold decisions – a trait that Gareth Southgate arguably lacked during his time in charge.

The German has already recalled Henderson as well as Rashford and may yet have more returns on the cards. The likes of Fikayo Tomori, for example, were often overlooked by Gareth Southgate despite the fact that he’s played a starring role at AC Milan for some time now. Based on recent decisions, he should be among those at the top of Tuchel’s list to welcome back into the setup.

Experience may well be the key to unlocking the silverware that England have been craving and, according to Tuchel, Henderson is a large part of that thinking.

It’s not the first time that the manager has surprised many with his decisions, either. It wasn’t so long ago that one England player was begging Tuchel not to play in a new position.

Tuchel shocked Loftus-Cheek with new position

After joining the likes of Henderson and Rashford to become the latest England recall, Ruben Loftus-Cheek reminisced about the time that Tuchel played him right wing-back.

The Milan midfielder revealed that he refused to play in the role, before the German opted to experiment anyway. The result? A part in four of Chelsea’s six goals against Southampton and a 3-2 victory against Real Madrid. As bizarre as Tuchel’s decision was at the time, it simply worked wonders for the Blues.

Reflecting on his wing-back role earlier this week, Loftus-Cheek said: “I remember when he came into Chelsea and he spoke to me about playing right wing-back. I said ‘no, no, no,no’, but I played there anyway.”

Now back in the England setup, it will be interesting to see whether the Milan midfielder will find himself in an unfamiliar role once more or whether Tuchel allows him to step into the position that he so often thrives in at San Siro.

Chelsea sold "world-class" star for just £12m, now he's better than Palmer

Chelsea have built a team full of brilliant game-changers over the last few years, but it’s still clear who their most important player is: Cole Palmer.

The Englishman joined the club from Manchester City just two years ago and is already considered by many to be one of the best players in the Premier League, and it’s not hard to see why.

In 98 appearances, the 23-year-old has scored 43 goals and provided 29 assists, resulting in a goal involvement every 1.36 games.

However, as with every club, Chelsea have also let a number of sensational talents leave too early, including one who’s even better than Palmer.

Chelsea's biggest transfer regrets

It would be fair to say that Chelsea have made their fair share of regrettable sales over the years, with Kevin De Bruyne being one of the most notable examples.

The Belgian joined the club in January 2012 for a fee of around £7m, but remained with Genk for the rest of that season and then joined Werder Bremen on loan the following year.

Unfortunately for the Blues, then manager José Mourinho didn’t take to the future icon, and after just nine competitive appearances for the club, he was sold to Wolfsburg for £18m in January 2014, where he would go on to produce 57 goal involvements in 73 games, win the DFB Pokal and secure a big money move to Manchester City in August 2015.

We all know what happened next, as the world-class midfielder went on to make 422 appearances for the Sky Blues, scoring 108 goals, providing 177 assists, and winning everything there was to win, including six league titles, two FA Cups, five League Cups, and the Champions League.

While not as successful, another player the Blues surely wish they never sold is the man of the moment, Marc Guehi.

The combative centre-back left the West Londoners for Crystal Palace in the summer of 2021, and did so for only £18m.

Since then, he’s made 161 appearances for the South Londoners, in which he’s scored nine goals, provided four assists and most crucially, led them to a historic FA Cup triumph.

His impressive development at Selhurst Park has also seen him brought into the national team setup and now, with 24 caps to his name, is arguably England’s best centre-back.

Yet, while Chelsea surely regret selling both of these players, there is another international superstar, someone who is better than Palmer, that may be their biggest regret.

The former Chelsea star better than Palmer

With Palmer being one of the best attackers in the Premier League, the player in question has to be truly exceptional to be in with a shout of being better than him, and Mohamed Salah is undoubtedly that.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

The Egyptian legend joined the West Londoners in a £11m move from Basel in January 2014, going on to make his debut for the club in a game against Newcastle United the following month.

However, after just 19 appearances over the following year, he moved to Fiorentina on loan in January 2015, where he produced 13 goal involvements in 26 games and caught the eye of AS Roma.

The Italian giants signed the future legend on a season-long loan with an option to buy that summer, an option that was activated for just £12m the following year.

During his time in Rome, the Nagrig-born game-changer racked up a brilliant tally of 34 goals and 21 assists in 83 appearances, totalling 6588, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.50 games, or every 119.78 minutes.

Unsurprisingly, such an incredible run of form started to turn heads back in the Premier League, and in June 2017, two and a half years after he left England, Liverpool spent around £34m to bring him back to these shores.

To say he’s been worth that outlay would be a monstrous understatement.

In the seven years since, he has racked up an astronomical haul of 246 goals and 114 assists in 405 games and played a pivotal role in two Premier League winning campaigns, a Champions League triumph, and the winning of several domestic cups.

How did he stack up to Palmer last season, though?

Well, the Englishman scored 18 goals and provided 14 assists in 52 appearances, totalling 4247 minutes, which comes out to a goal involvement every 1.62 games, or every 132.71 minutes.

In contrast, the “world-class” Reds star, as dubbed by Roy Keane, scored 34 goals and provided 23 assists in 52 appearances, totalling 4501 minutes.

In other words, he averaged 1.09 goal involvements per match, or one every 78.96 minutes – a mind-blowing rate of return.

Ultimately, Chelsea have a brilliant squad and in Palmer a genuine world-beater, but it would be fair to say selling Salah was one of the club’s biggest mistakes.

Agar on Smith’s captaincy: ‘It’s like he has god’s hands on his brain’

Steven Smith has retired from ODI cricket effective immediately following Australia’s semi-final loss at the Champions Trophy. He will continue to be available for Tests and T20Is.Smith, 35, informed his team-mates immediately after the loss to India in Dubai on Tuesday that he had played his last ODI match, meaning he will not be part of Australia’s team for the 2027 ODI World Cup despite standing in as captain for the Champions Trophy in Pat Cummins’ absence.”It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it,” Smith said in a statement. “There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey.Related

Steven Smith as captain: a litany of what-ifs

“Now is a great opportunity for people to start preparing for the 2027 World Cup so it feels like the right time to make way.”Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage.”Smith has long said that he was a series-by-series proposition in every format as questions have been posed to him in recent years about when he would retire from international cricket.Having referenced the Ashes later this year, he would appear committed for at least another home summer, but what happens beyond that remains to be seen. There is the prospect of away series against India and England in 2027.He is not currently in Australia’s T20I plans after being left out of the 2024 T20 World Cup squad, but has stated that he would like to represent Australia at the 2028 Olympic Games in T20 cricket and remains available for selection if called upon.

Smith retires from ODIs as one of Australia’s best-ever batters in the format despite being 12th on the all-time run-scorers’ list for Australia. Only five players have scored more than his 12 ODI centuries and only David Warner has a better average among those five.Smith was an integral part of two ODI World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023. In 2015, he made five consecutive fifty-plus scores including 105 in the semi-final win over India and 56 not out in the final against New Zealand at the MCG, where he also hit the winning runs.He was named in the ICC men’s ODI team of the year in 2015 and was Australia’s ODI player of the year in 2014-15 and 2020-21, the last a year in which he plundered three centuries including back-to-back 62-ball masterclasses at the SCG against India in the space of three days.Smith led Australia in 64 ODIs from 2015 to 2025. Only Ricky Ponting, Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Mark Taylor and Michael Clarke have led Australia on more occasions, although Smith was the only one not to lead his country in a World Cup.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Chair of selectors George Bailey paid tribute to Smith following his retirement.”We fully understand and support Steve’s decision to retire from One Day International cricket,” Bailey said. “Steve has said on many occasions he is approaching the remainder of his playing career on a series-by-series basis, a position which hasn’t changed and one Cricket Australia supports.”His record as a batter across 170 games is exemplary and to leave the format as a two-time World Cup winner cements his legacy as one of the great Australian ODI players. From an NSP [national selection panel] standpoint, Steve remains fully committed to Test cricket and is an integral member of and leader within that team.”New CA chief executive Todd Greenberg acknowledged Smith’s contribution to Australia’s ODI team over a 16-year career. “Congratulations to Steve on an amazing One-Day International career during which he has made a vast contribution to Australia’s performances in the 50-over format.”Australia’s next ODIs are scheduled to be a series against South Africa in August. Smith has committed to play for Welsh Fire in the Hundred at the same time, and his 50-over retirement should enable him to play more franchise cricket as he approaches the end of his career.

Do Kohli and Rohit have a future in Test cricket? 'It's up to them,' says Gambhir

Following India’s defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, questions loom over the futures of India’s captain Rohit Sharma, who stood himself down in the Sydney Test, and senior batter Virat Kohli, who fell for his seventh score of 20 or less in the series.Head coach Gautam Gambhir offered them support but left the big decision to the players.”I can’t talk about the future of any player,” Gambhir said at the press conference after the series. “It’s up to them as well. But yes, what I can say is that they still have the hunger. They still have the passion. They’re tough people. And hopefully they can continue to take Indian cricket forward. But ultimately, as we all know, that whatever they plan, they will plan for the best interest of Indian cricket.”Related

  • India did many good things, but the less-good things outweighed them

  • Konstas, Webster and Boland, the unusual suspects in Australia's moment of glory

Rohit has averaged 10.93 over his last eight Test matches with only one fifty-plus score. He spoke to at lunch on the second day and said that he had taken the decision to sit out the fifth Test because he thought it would have been hard for the team to win carrying so many out-of-form batters. He also clarified that he wasn’t retiring from Test cricket yet.Kohli, meanwhile, has been left frustrated by his vulnerability outside the off stump. He made an unbeaten hundred in Perth but all eight of his other trips to the crease have ended with his outside edge being snaffled up by the wicketkeeper or in the slips. In Melbourne, when that happened, he slumped over his bat. He had been playing an innings that looked, in Steven Smith’s words, like a masterclass until then. In Sydney, when it happened again, he yelled at himself and punched his leg.”First of all, every individual knows where their game and hunger is,” Gambhir, who had himself gone through a phase late in his career where he was out of form but battling to make the team. “That’s the most important thing for any sport and any profession. It’s not just about the sport.”It’s about how hungry you are, how passionate you are, and whether the team is moving forward with your contribution or not. Because ultimately, it’s neither my team, nor your team, it’s the country’s team. I believe, as I said, there are very honest players in our dressing room who know how hungry they are.”But yes, as far as my question is concerned, my biggest responsibility is that I have to be fair to everyone in that room. Not only one or two individuals. If I’m fair to only two or three individuals, and not to everyone else, then I’m being dishonest to my job. So whether it’s a player who hasn’t debuted yet, or a player who has played 100 Test matches, my simple goal in my job is that I have to be absolutely fair and equal to everyone.”India do not have another Test match to play until June 2025, when they tour England for five games. Rohit will be 38 by then and Kohli will be pushing 37.When asked about his thoughts on a long-term roadmap for the team in red-ball cricket, and whether it was time to invest in youngsters, Gambhir said, “Look, it’s too early to talk about it. The series has just got over. I think we still have five more months to plan where we want to head towards. But it’s not the right moment right now for me to talk about that. Where are we going to be after five months?”A lot of things change in sport. Forms change. People change. Attitude change. Everything changes in sport. And we all know that five months is a long time. So, let’s see before the [England] series what’s going to happen. But whatever will happen, will happen for the best interest of Indian cricket.””If you don’t give importance to domestic cricket, you will never get the desired players what you want in Test cricket”•Cricket Australia via Getty Images

Gambhir: ‘I would always like everyone to play domestic cricket’

India next play England in a T20I and ODI series at home in January-February before moving to the UAE for their share of fixtures in the Champions Trophy, which is being hosted by Pakistan. For the players who do not make those squads, there is the option of playing the Ranji Trophy, which resumes after a break on January 23.”I would always like everyone to play domestic cricket,” Gambhir said. “That is how much importance domestic cricket needs to be given. Not only one game. If they’re available and they have the commitment to play red-ball cricket, everyone should play domestic cricket. As simple as it can get.”If you don’t give importance to domestic cricket, you will never get the desired players what you want in Test cricket.”

More exciting than Lauriente: Sunderland agree terms with £17m “monster”

Sunderland are yet to pick up a win during their pre-season outing to the Algarve, but there have been promising signs aplenty anyway.

Indeed, the Black Cats have faced some formidable opponents out in Portugal in the form of Sevilla and Sporting, meaning a 1-1 draw and a 1-0 loss aren’t disastrous outcomes, when you also consider a large chunk of the first team personnel selected by Regis Le Bris are still getting used to one another as brand new recruits.

In particular, Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki caught the eye of Sunderland spectators watching on, with the skilful midfield duo set to be joined by another impressive body in the middle if emerging reports are correct.

Sunderland agree terms with £17m battler

Of course, Sunderland fans will take any progressing deal with a pinch of salt until it’s officially over the line, having been burnt recently by Armand Lauriente’s deal falling through at the last minute.

Lauriente was even pictured jetting off to the Stadium of Light to complete a move, but the wheels unfortunately came off the deal in the end.

Armand Lauriente in action for Sassuolo.

Hopefully, any last-minute mishaps are out of the Wearside outfit’s system, with The Athletic’s David Ornstein dramatically revealing via X that Sunderland have now agreed personal terms with long-term target Granit Xhaka.

The exclusive development by Ornstein reveals that Xhaka is only considering the newly promoted side as his next onward destination, with the hope on his end that the deal can be tied up rapidly for him to return to the Premier League.

In a window where Sunderland have already made a few statement deals a reality, this could well be the pick of the bunch, with the deal for the Swiss international – who is said to be valued at €20m (£17m) – a far more exciting signing to seal than Lauriente’s ever was.

Why signing Xhaka would be more exciting than Lauriente

Lauriente no doubt would have made his presence known donning Sunderland red and white, off the back of an explosive campaign in Serie B.

After all, the silky Frenchman wasn’t labelled “amazing” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig just by fluke, with a stunning haul of 18 strikes last season for Sassuolo clinching a glorious promotion up to the Italian top-flight.

Xhaka also has a sumptuous rocket up his sleeve, yet the seasoned 32-year-old would pick up his impressive tally of two strikes and seven assists in the far choppier and intense terrain of the Bundesliga last campaign, with the Bayer Leverkusen number 34 elevating his game to the next level in Germany.

From 174 games in the top division – with 66 of those coming about for Leverkusen – the midfield enforcer would collect 11 goals and ten assists, 12 of which were registered at the BayArena, as his side were even crowned champions of the usually Bayern Munich-dominated Bundesliga during his two-campaign stint.

On the contrary, Lauriente only has 133 games next to his name in total when plying his trade in Serie A and Ligue 1, with Xhaka’s expertise of the taxing Premier League also making him a far more worthwhile signing to pursue, away from festering in any lingering disappointment of the Frenchman’s deal collapsing.

Whilst he did experience many bumps along the way at Arsenal, Xhaka – in retrospect – is now viewed as a cog that allowed the Gunners to tick during testing times, as seen in his impressive 17 goals and 25 assists from a mammoth 225 top-flight appearances.

On top of that, he also battled away valiantly for the Gunners’ cause time after time, with 1001 duels being won in total, gaining him the label of a “monster” by Arsenal-based writer Connor Humm.

With the necessary grit required for a relegation battle, on top of possessing the quality to try and push Sunderland away from that mire, this really would be a standout addition to make for a £17m star also lauded as a “technician” by Chelsea great Joe Cole.

Lauriente might well have developed into a dazzling attacker under Le Bris’ wing, but if it’s readymade Premier League performers the ex-Lorient manager is after, he should ensure this move is sealed.

Freddie McCann's maiden century keeps youthful Notts in the fight

Surrey close with lead of 133, after seven wickets for spinner Will Jacks

A maiden century in only his third first-class innings from the 19-year old, locally raised left-hander Freddie McCann helped take Nottinghamshire’s reply to 405 at Trent Bridge despite a caree-best seven for 129 from Surrey spinner Will Jacks. Batting again, Surrey ended the third day of their Vitality County Championship match 133 ahead on 13 for 1.Play was soured in the afternoon, however, when Jacks, selected in both England’s white-ball squads for their games against Australia in September, smartly fielded a pull on the bounce at short mid-wicket and threw the ball hard and high towards the wicketkeeper causing McCann to take evasive action.Umpires James Middlebrook and Paul Pollard immediately summoned Surrey skipper, Rory Burns, and applied five penalty runs under Law 42.3.1 for “throwing the ball at a player in an inappropriate or dangerous manner”. The matter will also now be referred to Surrey for any further disciplinary action they deem condign.Half an hour later McCann became the fourth victim in the innings of Jacks’s off-spin, slog-sweeping to long-on for 154. And Jack Haynes soon went for 68 to the same all-rounder but the follow-on target of 376 was passed just after tea with six wickets down.On 144 for 3 overnight after the nightwatcher had gone to what proved Friday’s final ball, the home side lost Joe Clarke in the morning’s fourth full over when, rashly, he advanced to launch a straight drive at Jacks only to be stumped as the ball spun sharply out of the rough trough thew gate. Clarke, gone for four, was Jacks’s third success in 11 balls after his breakthroughs the previous evening. He remained a threat at the end from which fellow off-spinner Farhan Ahmed had taken seven wickets on the opening two days. But, with Haynes surviving an early alarm when edging a Cam Steel leg-break between wicketkeeper and slip on three, resistance of some character brought lunch at 231 for 4.The partnership had added 154 when McCann departed after 268 balls of high application straight after Haynes had posted a sixth fifty in his 15 innings since joining from Worcestershire. None of these though has passed 77 and the pattern continued when, glancing, his thin legside edge was taken behind.Kyle Verreynne, the South Africa wicketkeeper in his maiden county innings after arriving as Nottinghamshire’s third overseas player this season, was joined by Lyndon James to see the innings to 369 for 4 at tea. But two overs after they had averted the follow-on, James, slicing a drive to backward point for 23, gave Steel his first success in completing 22 of the 110 overs. With bonus points decided as five to Surrey, four to Notts, Liam Patterson-White was leg-before, one run later, giving Jacks his only six-wicket bag since his success at Rawalpindi in the first of his two Tests, against Pakistan in 2022. He had bowled a mere six championship overs hitherto this year.Rob Lord, on debut, came and went for 10 to Steel and Ahmed to Jacks without score as the final four fell for 21 in 30 balls, leaving Verreyyne unbeaten on 50 from just 60 balls. Leading by 120 on first innings, Surrey then faced spin at both ends from the off.It took Ahmed eight balls to add to his match tally when Dom Sibley clipped to mid-wicket but after seven overs bad light intervened with eleven of the day’s quota left unbowled. Surrey’s pursuit of an eighth win in nine games and a third successive championship title was put on hold for the night.

Kent bring in Tom Rogers for second block of Vitality Blast

Kent have signed Melbourne Renegades seamer Tom Rogers for the second block of Vitality T20 Blast group games.Rogers, 30, has several years’ experience in the Big Bash League with Renegades and Hobart Hurricanes but this will be his first stint in county cricket. In all T20 cricket, Rogers has taken 60 wickets at 24.78 with an economy of 8.38.”We’re pleased to have got Tom on board to sure-up our bowling options going into the ‘business end’ of this South Group stage,” Kent’s director of cricket, Simon Cook, said. “He has a lot of experience and has skills that will be useful to us with both the ball and the bat, too.”Rogers will reinforce Kent’s bowling in the Blast, with Xavier Bartlett having only been made available for the first eight group games and Wes Agar returning to Australia early due to a shoulder injury.Kent are currently second from bottom in the South Group, having won two games, but could still fight their way into contention for a top-four spot.”I’m grateful for the opportunity to play in the Vitality Blast and I’m excited to be joining Kent,” Rogers said. “We know that every game is vital for us now, and I want to do my part in getting results as a Spitfire in the near future.”

Amorim's own Wirtz: Man Utd lead race to sign "sensational" £70m star

Manchester United’s attack has carried them to countless trophies in recent history, allowing the club to sit on 20 league trophies – the joint most in English history.

Sir Alex Ferguson won a staggering 13 Premier League titles during his spell at Old Trafford, subsequently cementing himself as one of the best managers to grace England’s top flight.

He utilised players such as Wayne Rooney, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo during his 26-year tenure at the helm, with the latter winning the Ballon d’Or in such a period.

However, in the modern day, boss Ruben Amorim doesn’t have the luxury of such talents, having to rely on the likes of Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho, who netted just 10 league goals between them in 2024/25.

The manager has the potential to change such a situation this summer, that’s if the hierarchy are willing to back the 40-year-old in the transfer market in the coming months.

The latest on United’s hunt of new additions this summer

After securing a deal to sign Matheus Cunha over the last couple of weeks, it remains to be seen how much the board are set to hand Amorim to make the changes he desires.

Viktor Gyokeres is one player who’s been on their radar, with the Red Devils battling Arsenal over the 27-year-old’s signature ahead of the reopening of the window on June 16th.

However, the Swede isn’t the only star on their radar ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, with Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo a huge target, according to journalist Ben Jacobs via CaughtOffside.

He confirmed that the Red Devils are leading the race for the 25-year-old’s signature, after Spurs entered the race following Thomas Frank’s agreement to take over in North London.

However, any deal for the attacker could prove to be an expensive one, with the Bees demanding a fee in the region of £70m after rejecting the Red Devils’ opening offer of £55m.

Why Mbeumo could be United’s answer to Wirtz

Florian Wirtz has been a man in demand throughout the summer window, with Manchester City and Bayern Munich two of the sides interested in his signature.

However, the 22-year-old looks set to move to Premier League rivals Liverpool this summer, after Arne Slot’s side agreed a €150m (£127m) transfer with the Bundesliga outfit.

Such a deal looks certain to break the English transfer record currently held by Moises Caicedo, after the Ecuadorian joined the Blues in a £115m deal back in the summer of 2023.

The German has registered 30 combined goals and assists across all competitions this campaign, massively bolstering the Reds in their ambitions of retaining their title.

However, Amorim’s side could be about to land their own version of the attacking midfielder with Mbeumo matching Wirtz in being the major attacking addition for the Red Devils.

Like the soon-to-be Liverpool signing, he will be tasked with improving the current situation, with the Cameroonian having more of an opportunity given the difference in stats produced this season.

Mbeumo, who’s been labelled “sensational” by Sky Sports’ Mark McAdam, has registered more combined goals and assists, along with a better goal per shot on target rate – showcasing his clinical nature when finding himself in front of goal.

He’s also been impressive when getting at the opposition, completing more of the take-ons he’s attempted, whilst also managing more carries into the final third – evidently getting the ball forward at any given opportunity.

The Bees star’s dominance doesn’t stop there, completing more crosses, subsequently being able to hand other players around him the chance to improve their own tallies.

Whilst the fee touted for his services seems slightly inflated, it will be worthwhile, handing Amorim the top-level talent he needs to take the side to the next level.

The battle between him and Wirtz could well prove to be an exciting one, with the pair trying to lead their side to different achievements, but it remains to be seen which will have the most impact in England’s top flight.
