    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lammens will provide competition for goalkeepers Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir, who have made costly mistakes in United’s opening three games in all competitions. Onana made errors for both goals as Ruben Amorim's men lost 12-11 on penalties to League Two side Grimsby Town following a 2-2 draw in the Carabao Cup. Meanwhile Bayindir failed to command his box as Riccardo Calafiori headed home in the 1-0 Premier League defeat against Arsenal on August 17, while he was also at fault for Jaidon Anthony's effort in the 3-2 league victory over Burnley on Saturday.

  • WHAT DID LAMMENS SAY

Speaking to United's official club website, Lammens said of his move to Old Trafford: “I am extremely proud to be joining Manchester United; it is a real dream come true. The past few years have been an amazing journey; it’s now ended in an incredible destination and hopefully the beginning of something special.

“You can feel the positive atmosphere that is being created here, and I know that I can make a real impact at the club in the coming years. I cannot wait to get to know my team-mates and begin working with Ruben and the coaching staff. This is the perfect place to keep developing, grow together with this exciting team and achieve my career objectives.”

Standing at 6ft 4in (193cm) tall, Lammens made 64 appearances in all competitions for Antwerp, helping them win the Belgian Super Cup in 2023. He is yet to make his senior debut for the Belgium national team, though he was called up to the squad for the World Cup qualifying double header against North Macedonia and Wales in June.

Apareceu, do Atlético-MG.

Novamente, mesma postura adotada no caso Patrick.

Gilberto Mora: Why Mexico's record-breaking Andres Iniesta regen is on the radar of Man City, Barcelona & Real Madrid

The gifted teenager is attracting attention from Europe's elite after a stunning start to his career

"He’s got bags of talent and he’s Mexican, so we can consider ourselves very lucky," Mexico boss Javier Aguirre said in July after watching 16-year-old sensation Gilberto Mora set up the winning goal for Raul Jimenez in El Tri's Concacaf Gold Cup semi-final clash with Honduras. "The sky's the limit for him."

That last statement may well be true, especially when you consider that only a year ago, Mora was still waiting for his first taste of senior football. His rapid rise from the Club Tijuana Under-19s to the club's first team, and subsequently Mexico's starting XI has been nothing short of extraordinary.

Naturally, it hasn't gone unnoticed in Europe. Barcelona reportedly offered Mora a trial last September, while Manchester City have sent scouts to watch him in Liga MX action. As confirmed by his agent, Real Madrid are also now keeping a close eye on the teenager's progress with a view to tying him to a pre-contract agreement that allows him to head to Spain after he turns 18.

Whoever wins the race for Mora's signature will be getting a potential generational talent. He is certainly the most exciting prospect Mexico have produced for a long time, and Aguirre's words of praise sum up the feelings of fans across the country. It often feels premature to place so much expectation on the shoulders of young players, but the hype around Mora is totally justified, and GOAL has taken a deep dive into his development below…

Where it all began

Mora was born on October 14, 2008, in the Mexican city of Tuxtla Gutierrez, and football has always been in his blood. His father, Gilberto Mora Olayo, played professionaly for Mexican clubs Toluca, Jaguares and Puebla, and is now the current coach of Club Tijuana's reserve team, a role he initially took up in 2022.

Tijuana drafted Mora into their youth ranks early, and it soon became clear that he had the potential not only to emulate his father, but also to eclipse him entirely. He started playing for the U19s by the time he was just 14, and caught the eye of first-team manager Juan Carlos Osorio with his electrifying performances.

Osario invited Mora to train with the senior squad, and in the space of just a few weeks, he did enough to convince the coach he was worthy of a spot in Tijuana's squad for the 2024-25 campaign. He was left out of the first four games of the season, but then stepped off the bench for his debut in a Liga MX Apertura encounter against Santos Laguna at the tender age of 15 years and 10 days.

That made Mora the youngest player in Tijuana's entire history, and he also broke the record for the youngest to ever provide an assist in Liga MX, feeding Jaime Alvarez to seal a 3-1 home victory in stoppage time. In that moment, the Estadio Caliente faithful welcomed a new hero into their hearts.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportThe big break

Just 12 days after making his bow, Mora was handed his first start for Tijuana against Leon, and marked the occasion in spectacular style. The Mexican ace, who was also captaining his country's U17 team at the time, scored the decisive goal to give Tijuana a 2-1 victory in the 65th minute, calmly controlling a loose ball in the box before firing low past the goalkeeper.

That made Mora the youngest Liga MX goal-scorer of all time, beating the previous record held by Yael Padilla of Chivas by two years. He would go on to feature in 24 more league games for Tijuana before the end of the campaign, netting another winning goal in an Apertura encounter against Monterrey along the way.

On January 16, Mora also appeared in his first senior game for Mexico, in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Internacional. Mora didn't write another chapter in the history books because that was an unofficial contest, but it paved the way for him to do so six months later at the Gold Cup.

Aguirre named Mora in his official 26-man squad for the tournament, and he became the youngest Mexico debutant ever at 16 years and 257 days when lining up against Saudi Arabia in the quarter-finals, replacing the injured Luis Chavez on the left of a midfield three. Mora played 73 minutes as El Tri ran out 2-0 winners, and Aguirre was delighted by the youngster's impact: "He wasn't scared, he has talent with the ball. He sees football differently.

Mora was subsequently switched to the right side in the last-four clash with Honduras, but showed the same fearlessness in a much tighter game. In the 50th minute, he latched onto a pass some 20 yards from goal, dancing past one defender with ease before playing a perfectly weighted pass to Jimenez, who then produced a first-time finish that ultimately gave Mexico a 1-0 victory and a final berth against the United States.

Getty Images SportHow it's going

Mora retained his place for the showpiece event, and played a key role in Mexico's stunning 2-1 victory over the arch rivals. Jimenez and Edson Alvarez grabbed the goals to cancel out Chris Richards' early opener for the U.S., but it was Mora who kept things ticking over in midfield as he posted a 93 percent pass completion rate, with no nerves creeping into his game on the biggest stage.

That triumph saw Mora overtake Spain's Euro 2024 hero Lamine Yamal as the youngest player ever to win a senior national-team title. Whether or not Mora can go on to reach the same level as the Barcelona wonderkid remains to be seen, but the foundations are in place, and he also has the advantage of a strong support network, which includes Mexico striker Santiago Gimenez.

"Mora blew us all away at 16, I think he was one of the best players in the cup," Gimenez said after the tournament. "He's a very focused kid, who knows what he wants. I want to be an example for him and I also want to instruct him because I know his dream is to reach Europe."

That dream is likely to become a reality sooner rather than later if Mora stays on his current trajectory. The Tijuana star has also made a superb start to the new club season, now working under Uruguay legend Sebastian Abreu, who replaced Osorio at the helm in March.

Mora was selected for the MLS All-Star Game, and scored the only goal for Liga MX in a 3-1 defeat, while dazzling with his quick feet and composure. "Mexico has a gem here, it’s not normal to see a player like that, he is an exceptional player," Liga MX All-Stars manager Andre Jardine exclaimed.

That is one of six goals Mora has scored in August, with the youngster also netting braces for Tijuana in a Leagues Cup tie against the LA Galaxy and in the 3-3 draw with Chivas in Liga MX. Jardine was right: Mora is "not normal", and nor is the fact that Tijuana are already relying on him as their primary source of inspiration.

Getty Images SportBiggest strengths

Mora is an elusive winger/attacking midfielder who dribbles with a low centre of gravity and always keeps close control of the ball. He is capable of gliding past multiple defenders under pressure, and also has a deep box of tricks to pull from, which makes him thrilling to watch because you never know what he is going to do next.

From a technical standpoint, Mora is miles ahead of most players around his age as a two-footed maestro with a high footballing IQ. The Mexico international can flip from an orchestrator to a creator or ultimate difference-maker in the blink of an eye, possessing the accuracy to fire in shots from any angle.

His versatility and powers of anticipation are also invaluable, but Aguirre believes that Mora's "biggest strength" is often overlooked. "What I like most about him is that he never shies away or pulls out of tackles," the Mexican coach said at the Gold Cup. "He can be on the receiving end of a couple of robust challenges and he keeps showing for the ball."

'Can't stand it' – Jamie Carragher hits out at Alejandro Garnacho's behaviour at Stamford Bridge ahead of Chelsea move

Jamie Carragher slammed Alejandro Garnacho's behaviour at Stamford Bridge ahead of his Chelsea move. A £40 million ($54m) capture from Manchester United, tied down on a massive seven-year deal, the 21-year-old Argentina winger arrived in west London with expectation swirling around him.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

With his move finalised too late for him to feature against Fulham, Garnacho was forced to watch from the stands. Cameras soon picked him out in his Stamford Bridge box. What should have been a moment to showcase his enthusiasm for his new club instead turned sour. Not even eight minutes into the derby, Garnacho was caught by Sky’s broadcast team scrolling on his phone rather than watching the action. A seemingly innocuous act, yet one that lit the fuse for Carragher.

    WHAT CARRAGHER SAID

Carragher couldn’t hide his frustration when asked about Chelsea’s new signing.

"You know what I didn't like?" the Liverpool legend blasted. "Did you see the game [against Fulham], when they go to the people in the stands and they are on their phones with the game going on? I can't stand it. And it's not just him by the way, but I can't stand it. So it's a miss for that. For sitting on his phone during an important game for Chelsea."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Fellow pundit Roy Keane also had his say, though he was less explosive than Carragher.

While rating the transfer, he said, "I'm undecided on that one. I'm not convinced."

The former United captain’s scepticism appeared to extend beyond Garnacho’s phone faux pas, hinting at doubts over whether Chelsea’s huge gamble on the winger will truly pay off.

While Garnacho looks to settle into life in west London, his former employers may feel they’ve played their cards smartly. United not only banked a sizeable fee but also secured a 10 per cent sell-on clause in the deal, ensuring they profit again if Chelsea decide to cash in down the line.

'Age is just a number' – Alexis Sanchez out to prove his worth by inspiring Sevilla to title success as ex-Barcelona and Arsenal star responds to critics

Alexis Sanchez hit back at doubts over his age and fitness as he pulled on Sevilla’s No.10 shirt, vowing to bring joy and silverware to Nervion.

Veteran forward answers age and fitness doubtsTakes Lukebakio’s number 10 at SevillaPromises fans joy and title ambitionFollow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱WHAT HAPPENED?

Sevilla have turned to experience in their bid to rediscover winning ways, completing the signing of former Barca and Arsenal star Sanchez on a free transfer after he terminated his contract with Udinese. The 36-year-old Chilean forward, who will turn 37 in December, inherits the number 10 shirt vacated by Dodi Lukebakio, and with it, the responsibility of adding goals and leadership to a side that has struggled in attack.

Despite concerns over his age and recent fitness issues, Sanchez has wasted no time addressing critics. He joined training under new coach Matias Almeyda this week and immediately reassured fans that he still has the hunger and quality to deliver. Sevilla, buoyed by their first La Liga win of the season 2-0 against Girona, now welcome the veteran into a squad that suddenly looks stronger, and more complete.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportWHAT ALEXIS SAID

Sanchez came out swinging in response to criticism over his age and fitness, telling club media: “I feel physically fit. I still have a chance to be in Europe and at a big club like Sevilla FC. These fans are a reason to be here. I'm here to bring them joy.

“I'll give my best. I'm here to bring joy to the fans, the whole group and the coaching staff. We're all going to move forward together. I think you have to be professional. If you're physically fit and professional at what you do, I think you can prove your worth on the pitch. Age is just a number.”

He added: “I always have desire, experience, I always want to move forward, I always want to win… Wherever I've been, I've always won titles. If I'm coming here it's because I also want to fight for titles, I'm not coming here to play for the sake of playing.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

For Sanchez, this is another chapter in a career that has taken him to Barca, Arsenal, Inter and Udinese. For Sevilla, it’s about adding proven mentality, Sanchez has won titles everywhere he has played, to a team still searching for balance and a reliable source of goals. With Lukebakio gone and doubts surrounding Sevilla’s attack, the Chilean’s output could prove decisive for a side that narrowly avoided relegation last season.

AFPWHAT NEXT FOR SEVILLA?

While the Chilean trained for the first time with his new teammates, his official La Liga registration is still pending international clearance from the Italian federation, a formality the club expects to resolve shortly.

Coach Almeyda will then decide how to integrate him into a side that has just begun to turn a corner after back-to-back defeats. With Sanchez carrying the No. 10 shirt and expectations sky-high, his debut will be closely watched, both for the energy he brings to a transitional squad and for whether he can deliver goals.

The board has also agreed to bring Mickey Arthur on as a consultant while he continues as head coach of Derbyshire. The coaching group is designed in such a way that Arthur will play the role of team director remotely. He was also assigned to form the coaching panel that consists of all overseas personnel. Former Pakistan fielding coach Grant Bradburn will be the head coach while Cliffe Deacon (physiotherapist) and Drikus Saaiman (strength and conditioning) will continue with their jobs.Morkel will formally join the side after his IPL commitment as bowling coach at Lucknow Super Giants. He has previously been with the Namibia coaching staff during the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia and is presently bowling coach with Durban’s Super Giants in the SA20 League. He also had a stint with the New Zealand women’s team during the T20 World Cup in South Africa.Puttick, 42, will join the Pakistan squad next month. His only international appearance was for South Africa in 2005 and has since worked within South Africa as a batting consultant. Tom Haines hundred puts England Lions in control against Sri Lanka A

Sri Lanka A 136 and 228 for 1 (Fernando 114, Madushka 91*) trail England Lions 467 (Haines 118, Fisher 53, de Silva 3-59) by 1o3 runsTom Haines’ century on debut has put England Lions in a commanding position on day two of the first unofficial Test in Galle. The Sussex opener scored 118 from No. 3 as the Lions finished their innings on 467, establishing a first-innings lead of 331. The hosts were able to whittle that down to 103 by close, with a century from Oshada Fernando and unbeaten 91 from Nishan Madushka in a strong response of 228 for 1 in their second innings.Haines, 24, has been touted for higher honours off the back of two stellar seasons that saw him average 47.04 and 49.52 in the 2021 and 2022, with 1176 and 941 runs respectively. Among them were six centuries spread evenly across both, with this latest three-figure score taking him to nine in his first-class career.”It is very special and a very proud moment for me,” Haines said at stumps. “The thing that I was most pleased with was that it has put us into a really good position in the game. We would have liked a few more wickets to end the day, but we’ll have to come back tomorrow and try and get some more.”While not his first experience of Sri Lankan conditions, having toured here with Sussex Academy “nine or 10 years ago”, he scored positively with 12 fours and a six across a knock that boasted a strike rate off 85.50. It was in line with the innings as a whole which went at a rate of 5.31 across the 87.5 overs. Evidently the pre-tour briefing to try and emulate the positive approach of the Test side instilled by head coach Brendon McCullum and captain Ben Stokes has been well heeded.Haines also credited batting coach Ian Bell, who presented him with his Lions cap on day one, for reinforcing his work against spin. Bell, along with Graeme Swann, have been drafted in by the ECB to pass on their wisdom to the Lions, a relationship the began on the Lions training camp in Abu Dhabi last November.”I have really enjoyed working with him it has been top drawer,” Haines said. “I enjoyed working with him at the Lions camp in Dubai before Christmas.”He has definitely helped me out with playing spin and just my mental attitude towards it, and how you apply that so that you do it in the game.”Swanny and Belly spoke about the importance of first-innings runs before the game – about how certain shots you can play in the first innings but second innings you might need a completely different repertoire of shots. We’ll see how it plays tomorrow.”

In-form Short helps Victoria claim lead over NSW

He is 81 not out at stumps after Harris and Kellaway made half-centuries to put Victoria ahead

Short ended the day unbeaten on 81, with wicketkeeper Sam Harper on 4 not out. Short came to the wicket with Victoria at 108 for 4, but struck nine boundaries in a watchful 150-ball knock. It was the fifth time in the past seven innings that Short has passed 50 at domestic level.Batting at No.6, Short shared a 92-run stand with Campbell Kellaway before the latter fell just shy of helping Victoria pass NSW’s first-innings total.Ashes hopeful Marcus Harris built an early platform with a watchful 53 at the top of the order, while nightwatcher Mitch Perry hit 45 to ensure NSW commenced the day on the back foot.Fast bowler Liam Hatcher picked up the wickets of Perry, Harris and Will Sutherland to end with 3 for 80. Veteran paceman Trent Copeland was unrelenting during a long hot day, returning 2 for 48 from 24 overs.Starting the match in second spot on the table, Victoria are one of four sides hoping to join likely Shield final hosts Western Australia in the season decider. Arsenal player ratings vs Newcastle: Declan Rice, you beauty – Gunners seal Champions League qualification thanks to midfielder's stunner and David Raya's super saves

The Gunners all-but cemented second place in the Premier League for a third season running thanks to a narrow victory over the Magpies

Arsenal booked their place in next season's Champions League thanks to a 1-0 win at home to Newcastle on Sunday, locking down Champions League qualification from the Premier League in the process. The Magpies would have leapfrogged the Gunners to second in the standings had they taken the three points, but ultimately came up short as Mikel Arteta's men emerged triumphant.

The hosts played themselves into trouble early on when David Raya's low kick was cut out by Sandro Tonali. The Italian slipped in Callum Wilson, whose cutback was aimed goal-wards by Bruno Guimaraes, but he was denied by two scrambling saves from the apologetic Spaniard between the sticks.

Raya then had to be at his best to tip behind a deflected drive from Harvey Barnes, and the Gunners survived an almighty goalmouth scramble which saw their goalkeeper keep out Dan Burn and Sven Botman from a troublesome corner.

Despite that testing first half, Arsenal went in front shortly after the restart. Bukayo Saka won possession high up the pitch and tiptoed away from two defenders before passing to Martin Odegaard, who cut the ball back for Declan Rice to sweep home from the edge of the box – the Gunners' first goal against Newcastle this season after 52 shots across four games.

Newcastle were without in-demand striker Alexander Isak but they threw all they had remaining at Arsenal in search of an equaliser, though that wasn't enough to really trouble Arteta's side and Rice's goal proved to be the only one in north London after nearly 100 minutes of action.

GOAL rates Arsenal's players from the Emirates Stadium…

Getty Images SportGoalkeeper & Defence

David Raya (8/10):

Without Raya's four impressive saves in the first half, Arsenal would not have won and instead been staring down the barrel of defeat. Even despite his wayward kicking, they are indebted to their goalkeeper.

Ben White (5/10):

Appeared rusty as he continues to build up match fitness again after a lengthy spell on the treatment table, though at least was able to contribute to a clean sheet.

William Saliba (6/10):

The Frenchman's 100th Premier League appearance was cut short at half-time, with Calafiori taking his place. Defended his box well even if there was a bit of a mess in front of him.

Jakub Kiwior (7/10):

Arsenal fans had their doubts over the Polish defender coming into the line up after Gabriel Magalhaes' season was ended by injury, but for the most part he's performed well, no more so than today after stepping up with a series of clearances and tackles.

Myles Lewis-Skelly (6/10):

Motored into midfield and down the left flank to try and bring some life into Arsenal's game when there was none.

AdvertisementGetty Images SportMidfield

Thomas Partey (6/10):

Swept up when Arsenal were under pressure, though sometimes didn't help that cause with his decision-making.

Martin Odegaard (5/10):

The stats will show Odegaard supplied a crucial assist, yes, but he still looks a shadow of the star who was in contention for Player of the Year last season. Came off for Jorginho in added time.

Declan Rice (8/10):

Didn't contribute a lot in the first half when Arsenal were struggling, yet it was so typical of the season he's had that the £105m midfielder came up with a pearler to save the day.

Getty Images SportAttack

Bukayo Saka (6/10):

Hardly a vintage performance from Arsenal's starboy but he put in one hell of a shift off the ball for the cause, and this ultimately led to Rice's winner, stripping Gordon of possession to begin the move. Subbed for the returning Havertz late on.

Leandro Trossard (5/10):

Flittered between centre-forward and left wing with Martinelli, but the veteran Belgian was largely ineffective wherever he popped up. Came off for Tierney.

Gabriel Martinelli (6/10):

Pretty blunt in attack, though made himself useful with a tireless work ethic and alleviated pressure with clever dribbling.

Riccardo Calafiori (6/10):
