Bumrah five-for and express Kishan, SKY fifties take MI to bruising win over RCB

Fifties from du Plessis, Patidar and Karthik took RCB to 196, but MI topped that in just 15.3 overs

Rapid Fire Review: What makes Bumrah so good?

The bash-through-the-line Wankhede pitch and dewy conditions contributed to five 50-plus scores, including a 17-ball half-century from Suryakumar Yadav, but it was Jasprit Bumrah who produced the most decisive performance on the night to set up Mumbai Indians’ second successive victory at home.Bumrah’s 5 for 21 – he was on a hat-trick twice – kept Royal Challengers Bengaluru to 196 for 8, despite Dinesh Karthik’s inventive 53 not out off 23 balls. Karthik hit four sixes and a four off the last seven legal balls he faced to give RCB a biggish total. But it looked smaller than it was when Ishan Kishan cracked a 23-ball half-century inside the powerplay in the chase. It looked a whole lot smaller when Suryakumar, playing only his second game back from injury, reminded the world of his power and range. MI eventually mowed down the target with seven wickets and nearly five overs to spare.Captain Hardik Pandya was booed when he bowled a solitary over earlier in the night, but a packed crowd celebrated with him when he finished the chase with a six.ESPNcricinfo LtdPatidar, du Plessis prop up RCBRCB were 23 for 2 in the fourth over when Faf du Plessis and Rajat Patidar came together. Before that, Bumrah had Virat Kohli swiping and edging behind for three off nine balls in his first over, the third of the innings. In the next over, Akash Madhwal generated his signature skid to have Will Jacks, who made his IPL debut in place of Cameron Green, flapping a catch to mid-on for eight.Du Plessis tried to salvage the powerplay by staying leg side of the ball and using his hands to pump the ball over the top. Patidar, too, started quickly and later overtook du Plessis to become the first of many half-centurions in the game.Patidar reached the landmark with back-to-back sixes off Gerald Coetzee, but the South Africa quick hit back the next ball to bounce Patidar out for 50 off 26 balls.2:03

‘Bumrah does his research, he doesn’t leave a stone unturned’

Bumrah’s masterclassAfter removing Kohli with the new ball, Bumrah returned with the old one to almost shut down RCB’s innings. In a 17th over, which was full of yorkers or low full-tosses, he dismissed du Plessis (61) and Mahipal Lomror (0). Du Plessis failed to get under a hard-to-hit low full-toss and holed out to long-on while Lomror was pinned lbw by a yorker off the next ball.In his next over, Bumrah found himself on a hat-trick again but didn’t get to it this time either. He bounced out Saurav Chauhan, RCB’s impact player, and Vyshak Vijaykumar off successive balls, but Akash Deep somehow kept out the hat-trick ball, which was a yorker.Bumrah’s five-wicket haul, though, had his former captain Rohit Sharma lifting him off the ground, and his former bowling partner and current bowling coach, Lasith Malinga, on his feet, applauding him from the dugout. On Sunday, against Delhi Capitals, Bumrah came away with 4-0-22-2 on a day when 439 runs were scored. Thursday’s performance was even more special on a dewy night.Karthik finishes with a flourishKarthik, who has represented MI in the past, had the Wankhede crowd chanting his name when he picked a slower ball from Bumrah and launched it over extra-cover, providing a throwback to his six that won India the Nidahas Trophy in 2018.He played a number of other sensational shots as well. When Madhwal denied him easy access to the shorter square boundary on the leg side, Karthik scooped him for a pair of fours over short third in the 16th over that cost MI 19 runs. Karthik also helped take 19 off Madhwal’s final over, also the final over of the innings, but it would not be enough for RCB.Ishan Kishan was unstoppable at the top•Associated PressKishan blasts offMohammed Siraj and Reece Topley swung the new ball in the early exchanges, but that didn’t stop Kishan from maximising the powerplay. When Siraj swung one into his pads, he picked it up over square leg for six. Then, when Topley moved one away from him, Kishan crunched him over point. Kishan had a nervy moment on 12, when Topley found his edge, but it flew between keeper and first slip for four more.Kishan continued to deal in boundaries and repeated his feat of smashing a fifty in the powerplay for MI.Suryakumar Yadav, playing his second game of the season, got a 17-ball fifty•Associated PressA new high for SKYAkash Deep stopped Kishan on 69 and Jacks removed Rohit for 38, but there would be no respite for RCB.Their bowlers kept missing their lengths as the dew set in and Suryakumar went about making life even more difficult for them.Suryakumar could have been dismissed on 15 but Maxwell dropped him at backward point and then left the field, writhing in pain. Suryakumar then unfurled his shot and used his wrists and fast hands to scythe wide balls over point. He charged to his fastest T20 fifty with a sequence of 4, 6, 4, 4 off Topley in the 13th over. He holed out in the next over, but Hardik and Tilak Varma sealed a NRR-boosting win for MI with 27 balls in hand.

The New England Revolution are reportedly exploring a potential deal to bring U.S. men's national team goalkeeper back to the club, according to

The Revs are hoping to bring Turner on loan to the club, though it's uncertain how any deal would come about. The 31-year-old reportedly agreed to a transfer from Nottingham Forest to Lyon for $9.42M in France in June.

However, Lyon were subsequently relegated to Ligue 2. After a successful appeal they were reinstated. Financial concerns remain, though, and Lyon is reportedly looking to cancel the deal with Forest.

Lyon reportedly hired lawyers to end the contract. This past week, however, the French club sold their starting goalkeeper, Lucas Perri, to Leeds United for a reported fee of $20.8M, potentially opening a roster spot for Turner.

Any loan move to the Revolution would be difficult, as it's unknown if he would join from Lyon or Nottingham Forest – and who would be on the hook to cover a potential salary.

Turner played for the Revolution for four seasons from 2018 to 2022 until he earned a move abroad to Arsenal.

The final runs from March 21-25 so Wade may only miss the first game against Mumbai Indians on March 25 although his presence in the second game against Chennai Super Kings on March 27 could be tight. Their third game takes place on March 31 against Sunrisers Hyderabad.”He’s spoken with his IPL franchise and they’re happy to allow him to stay here, which probably equates to him potentially missing their first game,” Tasmania head coach Jeff Vaughan told reporters in Hobart.”We feel very fortunate to have someone of Matt’s ilk coming back into our group, and his experience and his performances at the back end of our season.”After 10 years with Victoria, Wade returned to Tasmania for the 2017-18 season and was part of the side that lost that season’s Shield final to Queensland. He was named Player of the Match for his 108 on that occasion.Wade was back in the Tasmania side for the last round of matches following Australia white-ball duty. He opened the batting for the first time in his Shield career having only previously done it briefly at Test level against India in 2020-21.He made 32 and 5 against Victoria in a game Tasmania won by 57 runs early on the final day to book their place in the final. There is one more round of regular-season matches to go with Tasmania facing South Australia in Hobart. The crunch game of the last round is between Victoria and Western Australia in Melbourne which will decide who faces Tasmania in the final. Scott Boland is expected to be released from the Test squad in New Zealand to play for Victoria.

Kuldeep: 'Bowlers must show more courage' against aggressive batting

Though there has been some respite for bowlers of late, with pitches slowing down somewhat and the frequency of 200-plus totals going down along with it, IPL 2024 has been about big hitting and record team totals. And the impact player rule is one of the reasons for it. For Kuldeep Yadav, though, faced with such “non-stop hitting”, bowlers must show courage and remember that they “have more chances of taking wickets”.”Every team is now trying to attack in the powerplay and score as many runs as possible,” Kuldeep said at a press event in Delhi recently. “It slows down a bit in the middle overs because of the open field, so the batters are playing more freely in the powerplay. Those days are gone when teams used to target 45-50 runs in the powerplay. But I think the bowlers must show more courage. If a batter goes for the attack, then a bowler also has more chances of taking wickets.”I feel that the bowlers are trying more to read the batters’ mind instead of sticking to their strengths. They are trying to bowl where the batter looks a little weak. But I think a bowler should understand his strengths and back his strengths. You can see Jasprit Bumrah, who backs his strengths. The way he bowls, any batter is on the back foot. He dominates the batters mentally. All these things become very important.”Related

  • Kul-dip and driftin' away to becoming one of the best

  • Pooran, Kuldeep, his wrong'un, and its ripple effect

Bumrah, of course, has been one of the rare exceptions this season, a bowler who has not only picked up wickets – he is the joint-highest wicket-taker at this stage with 17 wickets – but has also been tough to score off – his economy rate of 6.25 is the best of all frontline bowlers.Kuldeep himself is lower on both the tables, with 12 wickets from eight bowling innings and an economy rate of 8.45, but has been impressive on the whole. And a good example of what he is talking about came in Delhi Capitals’ game against Sunrisers Hyderabad – the team that broke and then rebroke the record for the highest IPL total this season – in Delhi on April 20. Kuldeep conceded 55 runs in SRH’s 266 for 7, but came back with four wickets, those of Abhishek Sharma, Aiden Markram, Travis Head and Nitish Kumar Reddy.”If you are not confident then you will be in a defensive mindset,” he said. “On the other hand, if you are confident, then you are ready to bowl even in the powerplay. I am now ready for all the challenges and always look to take wickets. My self-confidence has increased, and I have a lot of faith in my skills. I see how the batter is batting and how I have to bowl to him. I think where should I bowl to him so that he has a little difficulty in hitting.”Sometimes you can get hit even on good balls, like it happened to me during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad. [Heinrich] Klaasen and Abhishek hit sixes on good balls. But I believed in my skills, and I also got wickets that day. Now I enjoy my bowling more and I have learned all this from experience.”So far this season, Kuldeep has bowled just one over in the powerplay, for 20 runs. At the death (overs 17-20) too, he has bowled only three overs, giving away 33 runs. It’s in the middle phase that he has been used the most and has been most effective: 27 overs for 11 wickets, with an economy rate of 7.85.He is expected to be one of the players Rohit Sharma and the team management depend on during the T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and the USA come June. And in a team without many allrounders, Kuldeep is hoping to pull his weight with the bat too. It’s something he has been working on, and he showed glimpses of ability in DC’s last game, when he scored 35 not out in 26 balls with five fours and a six against Kolkata Knight Riders.”Rohit does not talk to me much about bowling because I am doing what he wants from me with the ball,” Kuldeep said. “He was concerned about my batting. He told me to improve my batting. I worked on it during the Test series against England [at home earlier this year] and he was impressed by my hard work. He used to be with me in the nets and speak to me about the nuances of batting. This helped me a lot and now I am enjoying my batting as much as my bowling.”
