Middlesex make quick work of Northants on slow day at Northwood

Hosts trail by 196 overnight with all ten wickets in hand after Northants are bowled out for 219

Middlesex 23 for 0 trail Northamptonshire 219 (Zaib 49) by 196 runsMiddlesex’s pace attack shared the honours as they bowled out fellow strugglers Northamptonshire for 219 on the opening day at Merchant Taylors’ School.Toby-Roland Jones, Tom Helm, Ethan Bamber and Ryan Higgins claimed two wickets apiece to ensure the visitors failed to add to their one batting point this season despite an excellent 49 from all-rounder Saif Zaib. The hosts sent Bamber in as nightwatchman alongside regular opener Mark Stoneman and the pair batted through the five remaining overs with some comfort to close 23 for 0 in replay. For anyone who’d had enough Bazball drama from the Headingley Test this was, if you like, the antidote, or a day for the county cricket connoisseur – a day of line and length bowling with every run hard earned.Northamptonshire chose to bat on winning the toss but runs proved hard work from the get-go. Boundaries were rare while the visitors struggled to rotate the strike, so allowing Middlesex to dictate the pace of the game. And frustratingly for Northamptonshire, every time a batter appeared set a wicket would fall.Ricardo Vasconcelos was a case in point when shortly after finding the boundary for the third time he feathered one from Higgins (2 for 33) through to wicketkeeper John Simpson. That brought debutant Justin Broad to the crease, the German international playing his maiden first-class game after signing a contract with the Steelbacks last month. Plenty of playing and missing followed as he and opener Emilio Gay rode their luck, though each occasionally broke the shackles, Broad cutting one fiercely to the fence at point while Gay unfurled one majestic cover drive.Middlesex’s breakthrough came when Josh de Caires was thrown the ball for the obligatory spinner’s over before lunch. Fresh from his career best 7 for 144 against Hampshire a fortnight ago, he promptly beat Gay’s tentative defensive prod to trap him on the crease. The afternoon’s play was soporific. Broad began with successive fours off Helm, but once the bowler extracted revenge by trapping him leg before the runs all but dried up. There were long passages between wickets, but Northamptonshire’s batters struggled to advance the game.Sam Whiteman nicked Higgins to the recalled Stephen Eskinazi at slip, the catcher immediately leaving the field. News came later Middlesex’s white-ball skipper had suffered a bruised finger and he may now bat lower down the order than originally planned.Rob Keogh ate up 40 balls in reaching 12 before he was castled by Roland-Jones (2 for 49), who then had his opposite number Luke Procter caught behind in his next over.At that stage Middlesex were almost through, but they gave a life to wicketkeeper Lewis McManus soon after tea, de Caires shelling the nick at first slip. The drop proved costly as with the Kookaburra ball having gone soft, McManus proved a good foil for the more expansive Zaib, who drove the ball more convincingly than his teammates further up the order. The new ball was taken in gloomy light, Bamber’s first ball spitting off a length and striking Zaib a nasty blow on the hand.He quickly recovered as the half-century stand was raised around a brief stoppage for bad light, before Bamber trapped McManus lbw for 24, the third Northamptonshire batter to be out for that score.Helm got rid of Tom Taylor with a short ball though his attempts to catch Zaib similarly in two minds failed spectacularly when the all-rounder hooked successive balls over the ropes for six, shots out of context with everything that had gone before. The blows raised the 200 but Bamber bowled Zaib one short of what would have been an excellent 50 before a comical run-out ended the innings.

Hidden Man Utd boardroom figure set to help them win race to sign £100m gem

Manchester United are considered to be in a strong position to sign a “creative” new wide player this summer thanks to a hidden weapon, according to a new report.

Man Utd readying for mass exodus this summer

Given how the season has gone for the Red Devils, apart from perhaps Bruno Fernandes it could be argued that no player is safe from being moved on this summer – it’s been reported that as many as ten players could leave United this summer.

Man Utd want to sell £10m-a-year star and replace him with "monster" player

Amorim wants Man Utd to strengthen their defensive options this summer, leaving one of his current options out in the cold.

Victor Lindelöf and Christian Eriksen are expected to leave when their contracts expire, while veterans Tom Heaton and Jonny Evans are now expected to retire at the end of the season, given their troubles with injuries in this campaign.

Harry Maguire

Meanwhile, United are openly looking to sell Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony as they hope that will generate funds for them to enter the transfer market. Midfielder Casemiro is also expected to be put up for sale after the Premier League side tried to sell him in the last summer transfer window.

It’s been reported by TEAMtalk that United now want to sell Harry Maguire, as they are wanting to move his wages off their books in the hope they can sign Jarrad Branthwaite as his replacement.

Man Utd to use Jason Wilcox to sign “creative” gem this summer

Moving these many players on in the summer will only help them bring in replacements, and according to The Daily Mail, via TEAMtalk, Man United are ready to go and sign Tyler Dibling from Southampton and make him their new right wing-back, despite the rumoured £100m price tag being placed on Dibling’s head.

Southampton's TylerDiblingin action with AFC Bournemouth's Dean Huijsen

The report states that United are ready to go up against their rivals Manchester City to sign Dibling this summer and they want to use Jason Wilcox, who knows Dibling well from his time working as Southampton’s director of football. Wilcox is being described as an ‘ace card’ and the hidden weapon in United’s plan to attack the market this summer.

The Red Devils have turned their attention to Dibling after missing out on Geovany Quenda, and while they believe he can play as a right wing-back, United also think he can play as one of the two number 10s behind the striker. Club chiefs have kept a close eye on the 19-year-old this season, watching him live in action for the Saints and England.

Southampton are anticipating the youngster, who has been dubbed a “creative winger” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, to leave this summer given their expected relegation to the Championship. But despite them closing in on a return to the Championship, the Saints are expected to ask for a massive 9-figure price for Dibling, perhaps with the knowledge that number will be whittled down somewhat in negotiations.

Northern mayors petition ECB to rethink 2027 Ashes allocation

Andy Burnham and Tracy Brabin question London’s right to three Tests per summer

Matt Roller21-Jul-2023The mayors of Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire have urged the ECB to reconsider its allocation of men’s Ashes Tests for 2027, which will see the north of England overlooked.Ben Stokes, England’s captain, said before the ongoing fourth Test at Emirates Old Trafford that he was “devastated” that none of the five Tests would be staged north of the River Trent, with Lord’s, the Kia Oval, the Ageas Bowl, Edgbaston and Trent Bridge chosen as the host venues.Andy Burnham (Greater Manchester) and Tracy Brabin (West Yorkshire) have now written an open letter to the ECB, describing the allocation of venues as “remarkable” and criticising the fact that London “consistently hosts three Tests every summer”.Related

Ageas Bowl to host its maiden Men's Ashes Test in 2027

England players 'disappointed' at lack of northern venues for 2027 Ashes

“We are writing to you to express our disappointment at the English Cricket Board’s announcement of match venues for the men’s Ashes in 2027,” the mayors wrote. “As you know, there will be no men’s Ashes Test in the north of England in 2027 – meaning that this week at Old Trafford will be the last men’s Ashes Test played in the North of England until 2031.”Headingley and Old Trafford are two of England’s most iconic cricket grounds, and home to historic Ashes moments from Ian Botham’s heroics in 1981 to Ben Stokes’ own ‘Miracle of Headingley’ in 2019. Very few grounds attract support as passionate or indeed as diverse as Headingley and Old Trafford – as a number of England players themselves have acknowledged in recent days.”We understand that the ECB’s criteria for awarding Test matches includes maximising attendances and ensuring a geographic spread of matches. It feels even more remarkable therefore that an area so passionate about cricket, with a population of over 15 million people, misses out on a men’s Ashes Test in 2027 whilst the south hosts three.”It does not feel right that at a time when cricket needs to do more to spread interest in the game around the country that London consistently hosts three Tests every summer. Next year, for example, Lord’s hosts one third of England men’s Tests whilst Headingley doesn’t get any.”The rivalry between Lancashire and Yorkshire within cricket is legendary, but this is an issue that unites both sides of the Pennines. We urge you to think again and ensure people in the north of England get the opportunity to witness more iconic Ashes moments in 2027.”Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester mayor, rings the bell at Emirates Old Trafford on the third morning•Stu Forster/Getty ImagesStokes said on the eve of the Old Trafford Test that England tend to perform well in the north due to the level of support they receive from crowds. “I’m a bit devastated that there won’t be any Ashes cricket here in 2027 in the north. It’s a shame,” he said. “I don’t make those calls, but if I was involved, I would have said, ‘please keep at least one game in the north’. I think it’s always a loud atmosphere here. You know the crowds we get in the north – and I say the north quite bluntly there – is very good. We get a lot of support.”Mark Wood and Jack Leach had previously expressed their own “surprise” and “disappointment” around the choice of venues, with Leach suggesting that by playing primarily in the south, England were not making the most of their home advantage.Headingley is due to host a women’s Ashes Test in 2027, and both Headingley and Old Trafford are due to stage men’s Ashes Tests in 2031.Andy Anson, Lancashire’s chair, said that the club were “entirely comfortable” with the ECB’s process of awarding matches, as well as the opportunity host more women’s internationals in coming years.”We are entirely comfortable with the process that the club went through with the ECB regarding the major match allocation package for future men’s and women’s internationals between 2025-31,” Anson said. “The announced package provides the club with seven years of certainty for international match scheduling which will see 40 days of international cricket played at the venue. The package is the result of in-depth discussions between the counties and the ECB and has been a thorough and fair process.”As well as the men’s Ashes Test in 2031, we will also be welcoming India for four matches in five years, in addition to hosting international women’s cricket at Emirates Old Trafford for the first time in many years – which we all look forward to. We are grateful to the ECB and our fellow counties for the level of cooperation and communication in arriving at this schedule.”

Lauren Filer in line for ODI debut with Women's Ashes on the line

Fast bowler Lauren Filer is in line for her England white-ball debut, in the wake of her fiery performance in the Women’s Ashes Test at Trent Bridge last month, after being named in a 15-person squad for the three ODIs against Australia next week.Filer, who touched speeds in excess of 75mph at Trent Bridge to live up to her reputation as the fastest female bowler in the country, comes into the reckoning with England needing a 3-0 clean sweep of the ODI series if they are to reclaim the Ashes for the first time since 2015.With the onus on victory, Filer could conceivably be unleashed alongside her fellow quick, 21-year-old Issy Wong, who was overlooked for the Test and hasn’t featured for England since the T20I leg of their tour of West Indies in December. Also included is the opening batter, Tammy Beaumont, whose England-record 208 underpinned her side’s strong first-innings batting display in the Test match, which Australia eventually won by 89 runs to claim four points towards their Ashes defence.Beaumont underlined her strong white-ball form with a match-winning 83 not out from 62 balls for The Blaze against Northern Diamonds in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy last week, and having missed the T20I leg of the Ashes, is set to resume her place at the top of the 50-over batting order.England head into the ODIs with confidence after coming from behind to seal a thrilling 2-1 victory in the T20Is, Australia’s first loss in any series since the corresponding leg of the 2017-18 Ashes. That leg was played out in front of a series of crowds in the region of 20,000 at Edgbaston, The Oval and Lord’s, and Heather Knight’s team are hopeful of similar support at Bristol (July 12), Southampton (July 16) and Taunton (July 18), all of which are sell-outs.Head coach Jon Lewis said: “We were delighted with our T20 series win and look forward to the next stage of the Ashes with everything to play for.”We’re pleased to welcome Tammy (Beaumont) and Lauren (Filer) back into the group. Tammy showed her quality during the Test match with her double-hundred while Lauren offers us real pace in our bowling alongside Issy (Wong).”The support the team have received throughout the series so far has been incredible and it is fitting to finish with this deciding ODI campaign as the first sell-out series in England Women’s history.”We respect Australia and know that this part of the Ashes series will again be a big challenge. However, we take a great deal of confidence and belief from our recent T20 victories and will, as always, be trying to put on a great showing for our fans.”England squad: Heather Knight (capt), Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Amy Jones (wk), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Issy Wong, Danielle Wyatt

Sri Lanka bring in Binura Fernando, Pramod Madushan, Dushan Hemantha for Asia Cup

Seamers Binura Fernando and Pramod Madushan have been named in Sri Lanka’s Asia Cup squad, replacing the more experienced quicks who are out with injuries. Legspin-bowling allrounder Dushan Hemantha has also made the squad, essentially as a like-for-like replacement for Wanindu Hasaranga.Kusal Perera is in the squad as well. It has been more than two years since he last played an ODI, but this has mostly been because of injury. He had been ill with Covid-19 in the past week, but is understood to be improving, and will join the squad when he makes a full recovery.Fernando and Madushan came in in the absence of the injured Dushmantha Chameera (pectoral tear), Dilshan Madushanka (oblique tear), and Lahiru Kumara (side strain), who have all been ruled out of the tournament. Chameera and Madushanka, in particular, are also battling to be fit in time for the World Cup, which starts on October 5.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Hasaranga, who has a thigh strain, could conceivably have played towards the end of the tournament, but with the World Cup so close, Sri Lanka have chosen not to risk aggravating the injury.Elsewhere in the squad, Matheesha Pathirana and Kasun Rajitha round out Sri Lanka’s pace contingent, left-arm-spinning allrounder Dunith Wellalage joins Hemantha and Maheesh Theekshana as part of the spin-bowling group, and wicketkeeper-batter Sadeera Samarawickrama also finds a place. There are no major surprises on the batting front. Avishka Fernando, who also had Covid-19 over the past week, was available but not selected.Sri Lanka play their first match on Thursday, against Bangladesh.Sri Lanka squad for the Asia Cup: Dasun Shanaka (capt), Pathum Nissanka, Dimuth Karunaratne, Kusal Mendis (wk), Kusal Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Sadeera Samarawickrama, Dunith Wellalage, Maheesh Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, Kasun Rajitha, Dushan Hemantha, Binura Fernando, Pramod Madushan

De Kock to retire from ODIs after World Cup in India

De Kock’s availability for South Africa had also become an issue after he signed up for the BBL recently

Firdose Moonda05-Sep-2023Quinton de Kock will retire from ODI cricket after the World Cup in India but is likely to continue playing T20Is for South Africa until the 2024 World Cup.Although no reason was given for de Kock’s sudden decision to step away from the fifty-over format, less than two years after giving up Test cricket, ESPNcricinfo understands that his availability for South Africa was becoming an issue as he seeks to get more T20 league contracts around the world. The situation came to a head when de Kock was picked up by Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s BBL and committed to playing for them between December 10 and January 5. That meant he was going to make himself unavailable for the home white-ball series against India, which consists of three T20Is and three ODIs, from December 10 to 21.On Monday, when CSA held talks with de Kock, sources told ESPNcricinfo that since de Kock remains centrally contracted, CSA expected him to be available for the T20Is. By Tuesday, de Kock’s ODI retirement took him out of the picture for the ODIs against India. He also appeared to have reached a compromise with CSA that will allow him to go to the BBL and still play for South Africa at the T20 World Cup on the understanding that he is getting some game time – albeit not with the national side.Is this concerning for CSA?CSA have first-hand experience of what Walter is describing, with their own league: the SA20. The window for the tournament starts after the annual New Year’s Test and ends a month later, with the upcoming edition clashing with South Africa’s two-Test tour to New Zealand. Because CSA have made it obligatory for any of their players who get an SA20 deal to play in the franchise tournament, several first-choice Test players cannot travel to New Zealand. CSA confirmed that they will send a second-string Test side for that series but recognised that an increasing number of clashes could make playing full-strength sides impossible. They are currently looking at ways to manage player contracts to accommodate league appearances and essentially, allow players to choose which international series they will play. This is in stark contrast to the situation four years ago, ahead of South Africa’s 2019 ODI World Cup campaign. AB de Villiers had made himself available for the ODI squad after refusing to play any ODIs in the lead-up to the event but his offer was turned down. Then-coach and captain, Ottis Gibson and Faf du Plessis decided de Villiers’ inclusion would be unfair on players who had been part of the build-up. That may no longer be the case.”We are living in an ever-changing world of cricket where the league space is strong and becoming more powerful,” Rob Walter, South Africa’s white-ball coach said at the World Cup squad announcement in Bloemfontein. “The pull on players to be available for national teams as well as league sides and the inevitable clashing of those two which is what we are seeing now. It’s happening already and it will continue to happen more.”The most important thing is managing that whole situation, trying to understand the players’ needs and obviously the needs of the South African side as we lead up to a World Cup. The benefit of it is that whatever happens our players will be playing T20 cricket and strong T20 cricket in the lead up to a World Cup. There is a lot of water yet to pass under the bridge. If we aren’t malleable and flexible in the way we manage things, the inevitable end point is that players will leave the international game and follow the leagues, which is the last thing we want.”De Kock is now set to feature in the five-match ODI series starting September 7, which is South Africa’s last outing before the World Cup. Overall, he has played 140 ODIs so far for 5966 runs at an average of 44.85 with 17 centuries and 29 half-centuries. According to Walter, de Kock has high hopes for his swansong in ODIs.”He has got some unfinished business from a World Cup point of view. It is great to have his energy directed towards these five one-dayers and then a World Cup to follow,” Walter said.
