Viana's a fan: Man City battling to sign "unbeatable" 6'8 star worth £17m

As new sporting director Hugo Viana looks to make his mark, Manchester City are now reportedly battling Chelsea to sign a 6 foot 8 goalkeeper who could replace Ederson this summer.

Man City racing to sign Ederson replacement

It’s set to be a summer of change at Manchester City as the Citizens look to make their way back to the top of English football following a disastrous campaign. As things stand, Pep Guardiola’s side remain on course to take the new Champions League place in fifth, but Erling Haaland’s injury is more than likely to throw a spanner in the works for the remainder of the season.

Following yet more injury news, those at the Etihad will simply be desperate to see their campaign come to an end before turning their attention towards a much-needed overhaul.

It’s then that Ederson could be replaced, with just over a year left on his current deal and reports suggesting that he could be among those shown the door this summer. If that is to be the case, then Viana could instantly welcome a fresh option between the sticks.

Man City now willing to grant Pep request to go for £190k-p/w Arsenal star

This would be among the moves of the summer…

ByTom Cunningham Apr 1, 2025

According to Calciomercato, Manchester City are now battling to sign Vanja Milinkovic-Savic ahead of Chelsea this summer. The Torino man reportedly has a release clause worth just €20m (£17m) and a fan in City sporting director Viana, who could welcome the first signing of a new era by securing the 28-year-old’s signature.

Standing at a staggering 6’8, Milinkovic-Savic could replace Ederson and hand City one of the most imposing goalkeepers in the Premier League.

"Unbeatable" Milinkovic-Savic is better shot-stopper than Ederson

Whilst there may be some that are concerned over Milinkovic-Savic’s age, the Serbian international is at the peak of his powers at 28 years old and could yet follow the familiar role of goalkeepers maintaining their place at the top well into their 30s. If he does do exactly that then City would be wise to secure their deal as soon as this summer.

A level above Ederson in the shot-stopping department, Milinkovic-Savic certainly has the foundations to become a No.1 around Europe’s top sides, albeit whilst needing to work on his ball-playing ability.

Described as “unbeatable” by Opta Paolo after saving his fourth penalty of the season in February, the 28-year-old will be one to watch this summer if he decides to leave Torino.

With Chelsea also reportedly interested, Manchester City will hope to get one over on their Premier League rivals by swooping in and landing their own goalkeeping upgrade, replacing Ederson by doing so.

Steve Waugh questions whether England have Plan B after Bazball

Former captain backs them to keep attacking but believes Australia’s bowlers will be toughest challenge

Smith: ‘Intrigued to see how Bazball goes against us’

Steve Waugh has warned England they are set to be exposed by Australia in the Ashes if they don’t have a back-up plan for when all-out attack doesn’t come off.England’s ‘Bazball’ revolution in the past 12 months has revived Test cricket in the country, and prompted the most anticipated Ashes series in 17 years. But Australia have made no secret of the fact they have serious question marks over whether it can withstand the Australian attack.England have scored at 4.85 an over in the past year while racking up an 11-2 record in Test cricket, and five of their batters have scored at a strike-rate of above 75.Related

In contrast, Australia have made their game out of building pressure and strangling opponents with the tightest economy rate of any team in recent years.Steven Smith cast doubt on England’s approach on Thursday, when he questioned for a second time how it would work against Australia’s attack.Waugh is convinced it won’t always come off, and said England were at serious risk of collapsing to their first Ashes series loss at home since 2001 if they didn’t have back-up plans.”That is the big question mark over so-called Bazball. What is Plan B? Have they got a Plan B?” Australia’s former Test captain asked. “If they haven’t then they are going to be found out.”They have shown they are good enough to carry this style of cricket off but the ultimate test will be against a world-class bowling attack, which Australia has got.”It is exciting but to me the jury is out at the moment. Does [Bazball] hold up under scrutiny against a really good bowling attack in maybe challenging conditions?”Regardless, Waugh said he did not expect England to go away from the fearless approach.”There is no doubt it won’t work all the time but I think with [coach Brendon] McCullum and [captain Ben] Stokes they will have the courage to go through with it,” Waugh said. “They can’t chop and change. Have they got a back-up plan? I’m not sure. That might find them out.”Waugh’s successor as Test captain, Ricky Ponting, said it was not impossible for England to pull off the ploy, but is adamant Australia can find answers to silence the hosts.”I’ve got a few thoughts on what I’d be doing if I was an Australian fast bowler,” Ponting said. “I think the reason the way England have played for the last couple of years is with this series in mind. They’ve been trying to find a brand of cricket that they can play that’s going to win an Ashes series.”

Friedkin and Everton eye bid to sign new £20m+ star to replace Branthwaite

Everton are eyeing a move for a £20 million new defender to replace Jarrad Branthwaite if he leaves the club this summer, according to a new report.

Jarrad Branthwaite latest as Man Utd eye £50m move for Everton star

Branthwaite has been one of Everton’s key players since breaking into the team in the 2023/24 season, forming a formidable partnership with James Tarkowski in the heart of the Toffees’ defence.

Tall, strong, great in the air, and comfortable with the ball at his feet, the young Englishman has attracted plenty of suitors thanks to his stellar performances at Goodison Park.

Among those are Manchester United, who are set to go “all out” to try and land him in a £50m deal after seeing two bids rejected last year.

While he has previously said he one day wanted to be Everton’s captain, in a recent interview with BBC Sport, Branthwaite dropped a worrying hint that he could in the future be looking to move on to a club which has a better chance at winning silverware.

“It is about winning as many trophies as possible throughout your career,” said the 22-year-old, who surprisingly wasn’t picked in Thomas Tuchel’s first-ever England squad. “A career is short so you need to make the most of it and give yourself the best possible chance to pick up trophies.”

“To be fighting for trophies is something that would be one of the main ambitions for every player and come the end of the career, have as many trophies as possible.”

Everton make £20m+ De Winter a top target to replace Branthwaite

It appears that Everton and their owners, the Friedkin Group, are already beginning to prepare for life without Branthwaite next season.

According to a new report from TEAMTalk, the Toffees have made Genoa centre-half Koni De Winter a top target if Branthwaite leaves, with the defender enjoying a fine season in Serie A.

Koni De Winter for Genoa.

TEAMTalk reports that Everton’s scouts are following De Winter closely and that the 22-year-old Belgium international is considered a “strong candidate to reinforce their defence.”

The Merseyside club, however, will face competition from Inter Milan, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and a host of other clubs for his services, which Genoa reportedly rate at £21 million.

It’s understood that Genoa, who are currently 12th in Serie A, will not stand in the way of De Winter leaving this summer if the right offer comes in, despite his contract running until 2028.

De Winter, formerly of Juventus, was highly praised by former Juve teammate Leonardo Bonucci after he made his senior debut for the Old Lady back in 2021.

“Koni had a good game, he played with personality,” Bonucci said after the Old Lady’s 1-0 win over Malmo in the Champions League, according to Old Juve. “He has no fear and this will be an advantage for his career.”

“He must remain humble now, he has enormous room for improvement, he has a whole career ahead of him.”

Not just Maeda: Celtic have hit the jackpot on star who's outscoring Kyogo

Celtic made a huge decision in the recent January transfer window when they decided to cash in on Japanese centre-forward Kyogo Furuhashi.

The Hoops sold the Japan international to Ligue 1 side Rennes for a reported fee of £10m after a three-and-a-half-year spell with the Scottish giants for the Hoops number eight.

Kyogo racked up 85 goals in 165 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish Premiership champions, with 34 of those coming in the 2022/23 campaign.

The 30-year-old marksman was not at his very best in front of goal in the first half of this season, before his move to Rennes, though, and that may have played a role in the club’s decision to let him leave.

Kyogo's goalscoring record this season

Kyogo scored 19 goals in all competitions during Brendan Rodgers’ first season back at the club last term, and started the current campaign as the first-choice centre-forward once again.

However, the Japanese attacker’s wasteful finishing was noticeable in the Premiership. He scored ten goals in 22 outings in the top-flight and missed a whopping 17 ‘big chances’ along the way.

The £10m-rated star also only scored one goal from 2.47 xG across seven appearances in the Champions League, which shows that the forward was incredibly wasteful in Europe as well as in the Scottish top division.

Kyogo scored 12 goals in 32 matches in all competitions, seven short of his tally from last term, and he has yet to score in three matches for Rennes in Ligue 1 to date.

Market Movers

Despite his drop-off in form, Celtic still lost a goalscorer when they sold the striker in January, but that did not matter because Rodgers has hit the jackpot with two other goalscorers in Daizen Maeda and Adam Idah.

Celtic have struck gold with Idah

The long-serving Maeda has exploded with 27 goals in 41 appearances in all competitions, but he is not the only Celtic star who has outscored Kyogo this season.

Idah was signed on a permanent deal from Norwich City for an initial £8.5m last summer and was valued at £2.9m by Transfermarkt at the time of the move.

He has enjoyed a very steady first full season at Parkhead, adjusting to permanent life in Glasgow, and has racked up a tally of 14 goals – two more than Kyogo – in all competitions. That includes three goals in ten matches in the Champions League, whilst Kyogo only scored three goals in 19 games in his Celtic career in that competition.

Idah, who scored twice in the 4-2 loss to Aston Villa, has shown that he can step up to perform on Europe’s biggest stage, which is something that the Japanese forward struggled with.

This, along with the fact that he has outscored Kyogo – alongside Maeda – in all competitions this season, suggests that Rodgers hit the jackpot by recruiting him to be Celtic’s new number nine last summer.

His market value has also soared as a result of his form for the Scottish giants this term, with Transfermarkt currently valuing him at £4.2m – more than £1m more than he was valued at last year.

Celtic will, now, be hoping that Idah can continue to shine and show that he has what it takes to be the long-term number nine for the club, replacing Kyogo, and increasing his market value to potentially be sold on for even more in the future.

Worth more than Tierney: Celtic must regret losing "amazing" star for £0

The Hoops already have a centre-forward who has provided a bigger threat in front of goal than Kyogo did immediately before his exit, whilst also having a player with the potential to leave a bigger mark in Europe moving forward.

"If I'm honest" – Ian Wright says he rues Arsenal selling "quality" player

Arsenal legend Ian Wright says that a “quality” player who the club let go really should be in Mikel Arteta’s first team right now, with the pundit “surprised” by just how well he’s doing away from the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal short of forwards after key injuries

A story of Arsenal’s season has been their shortage of key forwards, after serious, long-term injuries to the likes of Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka.

While rumours are surrounding the club’s pursuit of a new striker this summer, there are those who wonder whether they should’ve sold young centre-forward Mika Biereth.

The 22-year-old, who Arsenal let go for just £4 million, is enjoying the season of his life. Biereth is currently one of the most prolific strikers in Europe, boasting an excellent 25 goals from 37 appearances across spells at both Sturm Graz and Monaco.

Monaco signed Biereth from Sturm Graz in a £12.5 million deal midway through the campaign, with the Denmark international bagging three separate hat-tricks for them already.

Ian Wright says Mika Biereth should be a first teamer for Arsenal right now

Now, commenting on the “quality” in-form young striker, Wright has suggested that Arsenal made a mistake letting Biereth leave.

“His obsession with scoring goals. He doesn’t care how they go in, he just wants to score. That will always drive and motivate him,” said Wright, in an interview with Get French Football News.

“I have been surprised. Not that I doubt his ability, but normally you give players time to adapt to different structures and new opposition. He has that bit of surprise though, opposition won’t be too familiar with him either. The big test is if he can keep it up once the league is familiar with his game. I’m incredibly proud of him, it’s an amazing record so far and long may it continue. He’s also contributing to the team as a whole. He keeps friends from every club he plays for. That’s the type of character he is.

“If I’m honest it must’ve been something with the plans Arsenal had. Mika should’ve been in and around it at the moment. One of our chats early on was about him showing himself in the preseason for Arsenal and giving it his best go. But he had the bravery to go to Scotland, then Austria and now France and that is what shows he wants to be the best! He has to be playing to prove that. His record speaks for itself. It’s disappointing for Arsenal but on a human level, I’m delighted for him.”

If Biereth continues to build upon his electric form, Monaco will be able to demand far more than the £4 million authorised by Arsenal to let him leave. His value appears set to skyrocket, and given the plethora of shortages in attack, Arteta could really use a player of his ilk right now.

Ben Charlesworth shines on debut but it's more gloom for Gloucestershire

Glamorgan take the Severnside derby as Timm van der Gugten calms the nerves

Timm van der Gugten and Ruaidhri Smith held their nerve to usher Glamorgan to a tense two-wicket win over Severnside rivals Gloucestershire in a thrilling Vitality Blast encounter at Bristol’s Seat Unique Stadium.Set 162 to win their first outings of the South Group campaign, the visitors appeared to be cruising when Colin Ingram and Kiran Carlson staged a third-wicket stand of 69. But Gloucestershire’s veteran left arm seamer David Payne bowled superbly to claim 3 for 17 and the game was on a knife-edge with the visitors requiring 15 from 12 balls at the death.Netherlands international van der Gugten helped himself to two sixes in smashing 21 from 12 balls and Smith weighed in with a maximum of his own as Glamorgan chased down their target with five balls to spare.Handed his Blast debut, Ben Charlesworth had earlier top-scored with 56 and shared in stands of 52 and 48 with Ollie Price and Graeme van Buuren for the fifth and sixth wickets respectively as Gloucestershire recovered from 18 for 3 to post 161 for 9. Dan Douthwaite claimed 4 for 23, including three wickets in four balls in the 19th over, but Jamie McIllroy was the pick of the Glamorgan bowlers, making a mess of Gloucestershire’s top order to finish with 3 for 30.Beaten for the second time in three days, Gloucestershire were again left to reflect on a below-par batting performance, their top-order in particular failing to fire.Put into bat, they made the worst possible start, losing three wickets in the space of eight balls with the score on 18.Chris Dent took two boundaries off McIllroy before skying a catch to mid-on and falling for 11, while overseas recruit Grant Roelofsen swung at a ball outside off stump and was caught behind for seven off the bowling of Timm van der Gugten. Dismissed for 113 by Kent only 48 hours earlier, the home side’s confidence was dealt a further blow when Miles Hammond was pinned lbw without scoring by the excellent McIllroy.A return of 46-3 from the powerplay was below par and Gloucestershire further subsided in the seventh over, Jack Taylor finding himself cramped for space by Douthwaite, top-edging a pull to point and departing the scene for 16.Charlesworth rose to the challenge in forthright fashion, pouncing on anything short or wide to plunder a series of boundaries and bring the Bristol crowd to life. He received a life on 45, dropped at deep point by Ingram off the bowling of van der Gugten, and went on to bring up his maiden Blast 50 in the next over, carving McIllroy through the covers for his sixth four. But his progress was abruptly halted by Douthwaite, who also removed Zafar Gohar and Matt Taylor in claiming three wickets in four balls in the penultimate over.Having missed the entirety of last season’s Blast campaign through injury and making his first appearance in the short format since 2021, Graeme van Buuren offered Charlesworth staunch support in a sixth-wicket alliance of 48 in five overs.Gloucestershire needed to take early wickets and Matt Taylor and David Payne combined to remove openers Eddie Byrom and Sam Northeast inside two overs, the former held in the deep and the other caught at backward point. But Carlson and Ingram moved quickly to redress the balance thereafter, the third wicket pair advancing the score to 61 for 2 before the fielding restrictions were lifted. Desperate to break the partnership, Gloucestershire skipper Jack Taylor recalled Payne, and the veteran left arm seamer had Carlson caught at backward point for 35. But Glamorgan’s captain had at least ensured that those who followed him could afford the luxury of scoring at little more than a run a ball.Accordingly, Ingram and new partner Cooke adopted a relatively low risk strategy in easing Glamorgan towards their target.Having raised 25 via 18 balls, Chris Cooke offered a sharp return catch to Price with the score on 121 in the 14th over. Payne then bowled Ben Kellaway for three in the next over and, when Ingram top-edged Price to short fine leg and went for a 33-ball 47, Glamorgan were 129 for 6 and the outcome in doubt.Needing to score 30 from the last four overs, Glamorgan suffered a further setback, Douthwaite falling to the returning Matt Taylor in the 17th over as Gloucestershire, cheered on by a raucous audience, scented blood.Big-hitting van der Gugten then hoisted Smith over the square leg boundary to bring the asking rate down to 15 off 12 balls, only for Zafar to bowl Sisodiya. Ruaidhri Smith swung Zafar over the backward square boundary to leave the Welsh county needing six off the final over and van der Gugten won the game with one mighty hit over mid-wicket at the expense of Smith.
