Plenty of England's Lionesses have caught the eye in the top-flight this season, with Chelsea well-represented after a sixth title in a row
This weekend, the 2024-25 Women's Super League season will come to a close, with Chelsea sitting at the top of the tree for a sixth season in succession despite bidding farewell to Emma Hayes last summer. Sonia Bompastor's Blues have picked up where Hayes' left off, setting the pace from the get-go in what has been a dominant drive towards yet another trophy, one they collected with two games to spare – that a competition record.
Unsurprisingly, then, it is Chelsea who are the most well-represented team on GOAL's countdown of the top 20 players from this campaign, but there is also plenty of talent from both Arsenal and Manchester United after the pair secured the other two Champions League spots. This season's best performers are not all from the top three, though.
So, who makes the cut? GOAL ranks the most impressive individuals from the 2024-25 WSL season…

20Aggie Beever-Jones (Chelsea)
It's been a surprisingly tricky season for Chelsea in the forward areas, with injuries to the likes of Sam Kerr and Lauren James forcing others to really step up and deliver. As the Blues' top goal-scorer in the WSL, Aggie Beever-Jones has certainly done that on several occasions, despite only being a starter for 11 of her 21 appearances in the competition.
A return of eight goals means she's averaging a strike every 127 minutes, which is certainly impressive from someone in just their second season as a first-team regular with the English champions. Her hard work off the ball and versatility in the forward areas in general has been a real asset for the Blues, too, considering the players they've been without at times, with Beever-Jones always able to pose a threat regardless of where on the pitch she is deployed.

19Bethany England (Tottenham)
It's been a tough season for Tottenham. The north London side enjoyed a wonderful first campaign under Robert Vilahamn, finishing sixth in the WSL and reaching the FA Cup final, but this term has not been quite as fruitful, with them currently ninth heading into the final round of league fixtures. Conceding goals has been a real issue for Spurs, with only bottom side Crystal Palace doing so more often, but finding the back of the net hasn't been particularly easy either.
That makes Bethany England's return of eight goals this season, bettered by just four players across the WSL, extremely applaudable. Crucial to that has been a clinical shot conversion rate – one which is better than the likes of Beever-Jones, Vivianne Miedema and Alessia Russo – with it certainly not a stretch to say that Tottenham probably would've been in a relegation battle without England's quality in the final third.

18Elisabeth Terland (Manchester United)
It's been a strong first season at Manchester United for Elisabeth Terland. The 23-year-old signed from Brighton in the summer after scoring 13 goals in 22 games for a struggling Seagulls side, and while she hasn't quite hit those heights numerically this term, her nine goals lay a solid foundation for what she will hope is a lengthy stay with the Red Devils.
Terland's return of five assists, after notching just one last season, is a notable uptick, helping to rank her joint-first for most goal involvements across the WSL, and her all-round game has impressed, too. A hard-working No.9 who sets the tone with her pressing and will not shy away from any individual duel, there is a lot to be encouraged by from her first season in red.

17Courtney Brosnan (Everton)
Everton may well have been looking over their shoulder a little more this season were it not for Courtney Brosnan's performances in between the sticks. The Toffees really struggled to score goals in the first half of the campaign, managing just six before Christmas. However, Brosnan's top goalkeeping helped those half-dozen efforts be worth nine points.
Only Manchester United's Phallon Tullis-Joyce has a more positive differential between her expected goals against statistic and the actual number of goals she has conceded this term than Brosnan, with clean sheets in games against Arsenal and Liverpool among her most impressive displays.

He had McDermott well caught at mid-on, trapped Jarrod Freeman on the back foot and pushed a slider through Nathan Ellis.NSW are marooned at the bottom of the table without a victory after six rounds but are only two wins shy of second. Tasmania sit in fifth but are one of four states with two wins this season.
As Manchester City turn towards summer reinforcements, Pep Guardiola’s side are reportedly poised to chase a midfield addition worth as much as £100m when the window swings open.
Man City transfer news
To say that the Citizens have had a season to forget would be quite an understatement. Everything that could have gone wrong has gone wrong for the Premier League champions, starting with Rodri’s ACL injury against Arsenal in the early stages of the campaign. And since then, injuries have summed City’s campaign up to hand Guardiola the most frustrating season of his career.
For the first time in the Spaniard’s time at The Etihad, the Citizens are in desperate need of a rebuild which already got underway in the January transfer window. Welcoming the likes of Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis and Nico Gonzalez, they’ll be hoping their winter spending is enough to earn a place in the Premier League’s top four.
Then, once the summer arrives, the champions are reportedly set to turn their attention towards a Premier League midfielder. According to GiveMeSport, Manchester City are poised to chase a deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United, who value their star midfielder at as much as £100m this summer.
The Brazilian has once again enjoyed an excellent campaign at St James’ Park, with the Magpies once again battling for a top-four race and reaching the Carabao Cup final.

Man City’s injury crisis continues…

With Kevin De Bruyne set to leave as a free agent this summer, the arrival of Guimaraes could instantly replace the Belgian and ease any concerns over replicating his qualities.
"Great" Guimaraes could revive Man City's midfield
Whether it’s with Newcastle or, indeed, at Manchester City, Guimaraes looks destined to reach the top of European football. The Brazilian, alongside Alexander Isak, is arguably the most important player under Eddie Howe, who was full of praise for both him and countryman Joelinton.
The Newcastle boss told reporters: “They’re a joy to work with. They do have that inner strength. They’re both great people and they’ve become integral to the squad. They’re settled in and are very popular.
“They do have a slight flamboyance with the way they play. I’m delighted with both of them. Long may that continue, really.”

Given the success that Guimaraes has enjoyed next to both Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, the Newcastle star could reach another level entirely next to the likes of Rodri and Bernardo Silva.
As Manchester City look to transform their midfield, Guimaraes should be at the top of their wishlist. He ticks the box for Premier League experience and a player who’s ready to step into a Guardiola side.
England opener says he took inspiration from team-mate Dawid Malan to score a match-winning century
Mohammad Isam03-Mar-2023A set plan to tackle the spinners with sweeps and reverse sweeps in addition to overlooking the “smoke” around his batting form allowed Jason Roy to make 132 off 124 balls in a series-winning effort in the second ODI against Bangladesh.Roy’s ton was big enough to end the hosts’ proud home record of seven unbeaten ODI series wins in seven years. Bangladesh were bundled out for 194 in pursuit of 327, and it was Roy’s innings that mainly put them out of the contest.Roy got four boundaries with reverse hits off the left-arm spinners, apart from playing the conventional sweep to milk the slow bowlers.”It was a plan [to sweep and reverse sweep] with the amount of turn,” Roy said. “To go over point was the safest option for me. I tried to go over cover a couple of times, it was just too slow and too much spin. I tried to put that to bed quickly. Once Shakib [Al Hasan] gets that undercutter, I should have hit it to the sightscreen, but I tried to sweep him [and got out]. It was a slightly poor decision but apart from that, I think you had to keep your boundary options very simple. You can hit it wherever you want when you get a lot of runs. Out there, [hitting the sweeps and reverse sweeps] was one of the only boundary options for me today.”Roy said that the Dhaka pitch played to the batters’ advantage. It was slow, but the spin was to a consistent degree, which allowed for easier strokeplay compared to the first ODI where the pitch offered uneven bounce.
“As far as skillset for batsmen, to score runs in these sort of conditions is as rewarding as it can get. I am very happy to score.”Jason Roy
“I only faced four balls the other day, it was clearly a lot easier today,” he said. “But there was a bit more spin, but it was consistent. The other day it was slightly inconsistent bounce as well as turn. It was far lower scoring whereas today there was slow bounce. I think the boys showed a high amount of skill to give us that total.”Roy spoke about the relief of getting runs on this Bangladesh tour, particularly after getting out early in the first game.”Every single time [scoring a hundred] means the world. I worked hard to right my wrongs from the first match. I made a silly mistake then, and I was hungry to make some runs. There are some hundreds in the past when you get to 40, and you feel really free-flowing when you get to the hundred. Every boundary was a scrap. I built a great partnership with Jos [Buttler]. We ticked over nicely.”Every place poses completely different skillsets. None more so somewhere like here. I have scored runs in India. As far as skillset for batsmen, to score runs in these sort of conditions is as rewarding as it can get. I am very happy to score. The amount we scored today on that wicket in a series-defining match was awesome.”Roy said that he took a leaf out of Dawid Malan’s book from the first ODI when the left-hander struck his fourth ODI hundred. It saved England from defeat essentially, as Malan mastered the conditions to take the visitors home.”I have realised that very quickly once I stuck that one up in the air in the first game,” Roy said. “The way Malan went about his innings, I quickly realised to switch on, put my head in and bat some time.”It was just time at the crease. I can score a lot of runs if I batted that amount of time. As simple as that. I reduced the risk in boundary options. The one I got out to, was the highest risk for a boundary option I took. I got out stupidly.”

Defending 390, India bowled the visitors out for 73 to complete a 3-0 series whitewash
Sidharth Monga15-Jan-20232:05
Maharoof: Kohli is simply the GOAT of international cricket
A more comprehensive drubbing is difficult to imagine. Centuries from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill powered India to 390 on a slow and seemingly lifeless track before the ball started hooping around under lights. Mohammed Siraj took four wickets of Test quality, and Mohammed Shami and Kuldeep Yadav supported him with two each as India bowled Sri Lanka out for 73. India’s victory margin was comfortably the biggest in ODI history, beating New Zealand’s previous record of 290 runs against Ireland. The change in conditions was dramatic all right, but the difference in quality of the two sides was no less stark. India chose to bat first to challenge themselves to set an above-par total and then defend it in dewy conditions. As it turned out, the match hardly lasted long enough for dew to become a factor, with Sri Lanka bowled out in 22 overs.Watch on ESPN Player in the UK
WATCH replay of the third India vs Sri Lanka T20I by clicking here
The win, though, was set up with the bat. Rohit Sharma and Gill gave India the quick start they needed before Kohli took over. Gill fell for 116 off 97 in the 34th over; Kohli scored an unbeaten 166 off 110 balls. These were two contrasting centuries. If the two innings had a pulse, Gill’s resembled that of a cricketer: explosive power interspersed with near-inactivity. Kohli’s was that of a mid-distance runner: regular, rhythmic mid-to-high heartbeat maintained efficiently without any huffing and puffing. In the home stretch, he turned into a sprinter. It should not be a surprise. It was only the second ODI century for Gill, who is still coming to terms with pacing international innings, whereas Kohli’s was his 46th. It was his 10th against Sri Lanka, the most any batter has scored against a single opposition.2:30
Jaffer: Gill will be India’s next big batter after Kohli
India scored only one run off the bat in their first three overs, which suggested the batters needed to get used to a slow surface, but once they got going, they went hard. The lack of depth in the Sri Lanka bowling showed, which meant the batters could afford to not go hard against Wanindu Hasaranga.Gill and Rohit scored in spurts. After the slow start, Gill followed a Rohit six with four consecutive fours in the sixth over, bowled by Lahiru Kumara. A brief lull was then broken with two sixes and a four from Rohit in the 10th over, bowled by Kasun Rajitha. Then five overs went without a boundary immediately after the powerplay. Rohit then tried to manufacture one by pulling a shortish ball in the air in the 16th, and was caught at deep backward square leg, done in by the lack of pace and bounce in the pitch.Kohli walked in, and cover-drove the second ball he faced for four. In his second over at the wicket, Kohli delivered a one-two to legspinner Jeffrey Vandersay, cover-driving him for four before going back to late-cut the next ball, which was predictably flatter.Gill, who had gone from 5 off 14 to 35 off 28 to 52 off 55, then opened up with a short-arm slog-swept six off Vandersay. He took 34 balls to get the 48 runs needed for his hundred while Kohli settled into an upgraded version of the already efficient anchor he was: scoring at more than a run a ball without taking any risks. After he got to his hundred, Gill tried to switch into a higher gear in the last nine overs of the second powerplay, and hit Vandersay for three fours in the 32nd before being defeated by the low bounce of a slower ball from Rajitha in the 33rd.Kohli, on a risk-free 58 off 56 then, slowly pushed himself ever so slightly to reach 82 off 76 by the end of the 40th over. That the pitch had become even slower and more difficult to score off was apparent in the way Shreyas Iyer struggled for timing. In the last 10 overs, Sri Lanka’s fielding fell to pieces. It began with Vandersay running from long-on and getting lobbed by a Kohli mishit. Kohli acknowledged his luck there, which was also acknowledgement of the wretched luck he has had over the last three years. Then there was an ugly collision between Ashen Bandara and Vandersay as they converged on a ground shot from Kohli.3:33
Jaffer: You don’t miss Bumrah when Siraj is bowling like this
During his hundred in the first ODI, Kohli seemed to run out of juice towards the end. Here he barely broke a sweat. And once Kohli is fresh and set in the death overs, the pressure on the fielding side is extreme. Catches kept going down, balls kept getting fumbled, loose balls kept arriving, and Kohli went from zero sixes in the first 40 overs to eight by the end of the innings, the most he has hit in an ODI innings.Kohli more than doubled his score in the last 10 overs, scoring 84 off the last 34 balls he faced without much contribution from the other end. India scored 116 from the last 10.Bandara was going to miss the chase with his injury, and Vandersay availed a concussion substitute in Dunith Wellagagae. One batter short, Sri Lanka’s task was always going to be tough, but the red-hot Siraj made it impossible.Siraj has been using the outswinger more these days while the ball is still swinging, and has become less reliant on his favourite toy, the wobble-seam inducker. As it turned out, the ball kept swinging. One wide slip took a catch, then a second slip came in, then a third, and it suddenly looked like India were pushing for a Test win on the last evening.Avishka Fernando and Kusal Mendis fell to the classic outswinger, Nuwanidu Fernando inside-edged a wide outswinger, and Hasaranga got the wobble-seam delivery that seamed in to hit the top of off.Shami looked no less dangerous, and the pressure created resulted in two soft dismissals against him. Kuldeep bowled Dasun Shanaka through the gate, and Siraj ran out the striker Karunaratne with a throw in his follow-through.In the end, India stopped trying to get the last wicket from the other end to let Siraj go for a five-wicket haul. Eventually he got an lbw decision in his favour with the last ball of his allotment of 10, but Rajitha had inside-edged it, and reviewed successfully. The last wicket ended up adding 22 before Kuldeep ended the match with the wicket of Kumara.
Chelsea have already made contact and held talks with a Brazilian defender via his representatives, with manager Enzo Maresca looking to strengthen his squad in a variety of areas before his second full campaign in charge.
Chelsea set to "go big" on multiple positions this summer
The west Londoners are very much competing for a place in next season’s Champions League with a top four finish well and truly in the realms of possibility, but the last two months have taught us that there is still plenty of work to do on the Chelsea squad for next season.

It is believed that Chelsea are set to “go big” on signing a defender, midfielder and forward this summer, according to reliable journalist Simon Phillips, and there is some optimism that they could look to bring in a new full-back.
“Our top SPTC source has heard this weekend that Chelsea are ‘going big’ for a new goalkeeper, centre back, and a striker in the summer transfer window,” wrote Phillips, via his Substack.
Chelsea manager EnzoMarescalooks dejected after the match
“He also mentions other positions such as a new full back, but we have no definitive news on that just yet.”
A lot of the noise has centered around Chelsea’s pursuit of a central defender, with Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi among Maresca’s key targets, but a right-back may also be possible.
Reece James finds himself on the treatment table consistently with injury problems, leaving Maresca with just Malo Gusto and makeshift alternatives to the £250,000-per-week defender.
Reece James in action for Chelsea
Chelsea could look to reinforce that area of the squad as a result, with Stamford Bridge officials recently raiding Brazil for talent. Now, as per South American news outlet RTI Esporte, their attention has turned towards Flamengo defender Wesley Franca.
The 21-year-old, who can also play as a right-midfielder, is a target for many Premier League sides and Chelsea are no exception.
Chelsea hold talks with Flamengo defender Wesley Franca via his camp
As per RTI Esporte, Chelsea have approached Franca’s camp for talks ahead of the summer window, but they face stiff competition from Arsenal, Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United and Newcastle.
Wesley Franca celebrates for Flamengo.
All of these sides, bar Manchester City, who also hold an interest, have all contacted the player to gauge conditions of a potential deal before the next campaign. Franca’s reputation across the Atlantic is growing, but Flamengo would sell for a fee of around £29 million.
Meanwhile, ex-Chelsea defender Filipe Luis has branded France as a player with “no ceiling” in a serious endorsement of his teammate.
“He’s the kind of player who will decide where he wants to play come June,” said Luis. “There’s no ceiling for this kid; he’s exceptional.”
Newcastle United do have an EFL Cup final on the horizon, but there will be a disappointment in the air on Tyneside all the same as Eddie Howe’s Magpies crashed out of the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon.
Brighton and Hove Albion would eventually run out 2-1 victors in extra-time courtesy of a late Danny Welbeck strike, as both sides ended up entering the additional 30 minutes of action down a man due to two red cards in a feisty affair at St James’ Park.
Before all that drama played out, however, a former Newcastle face came back to haunt the Toon in Yankuba Minteh, as the Gambian attacker – who never properly donned Magpies black and white – showed Howe and Co what they’re missing out on.
Minteh's heroics at St James' Park
After a standout loan stint in the Netherlands with Feyenoord saw Minteh bag 11 strikes from 37 games, many back at Newcastle would have expected the 20-year-old to be given a fair shot in the first team.
Instead, however, the Tyneside outfit were at the mercy of PSR and had to offload the young winger, eventually selling him to Fabian Hurzeler’s Seagulls for £30m, a decision which now has come back to bite them.
It was a muted celebration from the 20-year-old on his return, but the Brighton speedster would have been delighted inside, with this breakaway strike his tenth goal contribution for the season from 26 clashes.
Whilst there will be a lot of obvious regret on Newcastle’s end that they let Minteh go prematurely, the Magpies are stacked in the attacking department arguably, even if Anthony Gordon did steal the headlines for all the wrong reasons in this match with a dismissal.
After all, Jacob Murphy has been one of Newcastle’s underrated players this term, featuring in Minteh’s preferred position and contributing with six goals and eight assists.

Missed more than Minteh: Newcastle will regret letting £35m star leave
Newcastle have fallen victim to some dodgy sales in recent years, notably allowing Chris Wood to exit the building for £15m, only for the New Zealand sharpshooter to now be on 18 goals and counting for Nottingham Forest this season in league action.
Alongside Wood in Nuno Espirito Santo’s camp is another former Toon figure in Elliot Anderson, who the top-flight overachievers managed to lure to the City Ground last summer for a figure of £35m.
Like Minteh, Anderson has arguably become a man-possessed for Forest in the middle of the park ever since this move was sanctioned, with the 22-year-old a promising local talent for the Magpies when amassing three assists from 55 games.
Now, however, as scout Jacek Kulig stated, “the most expensive signing in the club’s history is really paying off”. He’s also been described as “one of the best signings of the entire summer” by European football expert Zach Lowy. Fine praise indeed.
This has certainly left Newcastle in a sticky situation where they must curse their decision-making now to get rid of their homegrown talent, even if it did help PIF and Co comply with PSR rules in the process.

Looking at the table above, it’s clear that Anderson is the heartbeat of this energetic yet dogged Forest side, with flair in spades whenever he roams forward, but that is matched with grit and a fight that has seen him win a high 6.5 duels per top-flight contest.
In an alternate reality, Anderson would slot in nicely to the central midfield spots in Howe’s XI now, but it wasn’t to be as the Forest number eight now goes about securing a top-four finish for his side at the expense of his ex-employers.

While Minteh’s exit will undoubtedly sting, seeing a homegrown prodigy – one of your own if you like – thriving elsewhere is certainly a bigger pill to swallow.

And so the cycle continues at Manchester United. With the end of the season on the horizon, the Red Devils will head into the summer window in need of a major overhaul yet again in this grim post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.
Getting it right on the recruitment front has long been an issue at Old Trafford, even stretching into the glory days under Fergie. Who can forget the 2009 window, in which the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez were replaced by Michael Owen, Antonio Valencia and Gabriel Obertan…
A word must also be said for 2013, when new boss David Moyes spent the summer chasing Cesc Fabregas and Gareth Bale – in came Marouane Fellaini. The 2020 window, under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, is another that requires further scrutiny, with the Norwegian coach handed the likes of Donny van de Beek, Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and a teenage Facundo Pellistri.
As can be seen above, far too often have the Manchester side made a mess of things with regard to incomings, with INEOS – who may have questions to answer regarding their own business last summer – now left to try and rebuild the squad in Ruben Amorim’s image.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe and co will no doubt need to cover up the mess of the previous regime, with there seemingly a number of Erik ten Hag signings who need to be shown the door ahead of 2025/26.
How Man Utd's stars compare under Ten Hag & Amorim this season
When Amorim walked in the door back in November, United were languishing in mid-table, albeit with just seven points separating them and the top four, amid a slim but realistic chance of ending the season in the Champions League berths.
As it stands, the 15th-place strugglers are now 13 points behind Chelsea in fifth, having also slipped to ten points adrift of eighth-place Brighton and Hove Albion, ensuring any form of European qualification is likely to rest on Europa League glory.
Those woes lay bare the difficulties that Amorim has faced since replacing Ten Hag in the dugout, with far too many of his side having gone even further off the boil following the change in manager.

As indicated in the table above, the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo – prior to his cruel injury blow – have been the major beneficiaries of the Portuguese’s arrival, with the attacking pair having found their shooting boots amid the change in set-up.
On the flip side, Alejandro Garnacho – who was linked with a move to Chelsea in January – has scored just once under the new regime, with questions still to be asked over whether the Argentine truly fits in the 3-4-3 system.
The 20-year-old winger isn’t alone in having suffered of late, with Andre Onana’s strong early-season form having rapidly faded over the past three months or so.
Man Utd's "best player this season" needs to be sold
Prior to Amorim’s arrival – and the meteoric rise of Amad – there was a time in which it looked like Onana was blossoming into becoming United’s key performer, with journalist Steven Railston stating in late November that the Cameroonian had been the club’s “best player this season” at that stage.
Indeed, the former Inter stopper had produced a real highlight reel of saves in the early months of the campaign, even as Ten Hag’s fortunes dwindled, having notably produced stunning double saves away to the likes of Crystal Palace – as shown above – and Porto.
Since Amorim’s appointment, however, things have quickly taken a turn for the worse, with the 28-year-old making a string of costly mistakes across all competitions. After conceding just 17 times in 13 games under Ten Hag, Onana has now conceded 32 goals in just 20 games under Amorim in 2024/25.
Against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford, for instance, the experienced ‘keeper failed to keep out Morgan Gibbs-White’s long-range effort, before both he and Lisandro Martinez watched on as Chris Wood’s header looped in at the back post.
Just days later, Onana’s errant pass out from the back was swiftly punished as Viktoria Plzen took a shock lead away in Czechia, while the new year has seemingly been the same old story, with the one-time Ajax man at fault for Brighton’s third goal after palming the ball into the path of Georginio Rutter.
Andre Onana
That was followed by the £120k-per-week star also pushing the ball into the path of James Maddison in the defeat to Tottenham Hotspur, while he also produced a strange parry into the air for Abdoulaye Doucoure’s header in the 2-2 draw at Goodison Park.
That growing list was then added to in the narrow 3-2 win over Ipswich Town, with Onana – who had raced out of his goal – partially at fault along with Patrick Dorgu for the away side’s opener, having also failed to keep out Jaden Philogene’s curling cross.
With three errors made leading to a goal by United’s number 24 in the Premier League this term, he is now looking back to the player who proved so costly in last season’s Champions League group stage horror show.
As analyst H noted on X, Onana will “never fill the Old Trafford crowd with any sense of confidence”, be it with the ball at his feet or when making a save. As The Overlap’s tactics man also went on to state, such uncertainty and nervousness is “impossible to come back from”.

The Manchester Evening News has reported in recent days that the current first-choice is keen to stay put next season, yet with Amorim himself seemingly looking to acquire a new goalkeeper, Onana’s days at Old Trafford should well be numbered.
And so, while the £47.2m signing did show signs of life in the early months of 2024/25, old habits have crept back in since then. INEOS may have other more pressing issues to consider this summer, but seeking out an upgrade in the sticks should certainly remain high on the agenda.
