Tottenham racing to sign £100m "superstar" striker on loan for Ange

Tottenham Hotspur are now racing to sign a “superstar” £100m striker during the January transfer window, according to a report.

Spurs keen to strengthen in January

One of Ange Postecoglou’s main priorities this month is likely to be signing a new defender, given that the ongoing injury crisis at N17 has left him with just one available senior centre-back, namely Radu Dragusin.

However, there are signs that Tottenham may also be keen on strengthening their strike force, with Randal Kolo Muani becoming the latest player to be linked with a move to north London, where he would compete with Dominic Solanke for a starting spot.

Spurs also opened talks with Lille striker Jonathan David last month, highlighting their desire to bring in a new forward at some point in the near future, and they may have just been handed a perfect opportunity to bring in an up-and-coming striker.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Brighton & Hove Albion have given the green light for Evan Ferguson to leave the club this month, potentially opening the door for a move to north London, with Spurs ‘racing’ to sign him.

Tottenham are keen on strengthening in a number of areas this month, with the striker being named as one of them, given that Richarlison has underperformed when given the opportunity.

Republic of Ireland'sEvanFergusonand Nathan Collins during the warm up before the match

Ferguson could become a key target for Spurs as the January transfer window progresses, with Brighton making him available on loan. Tottenham are ‘eager’ to agree a loan deal, although they want to include an option or obligation to buy in the summer.

The striker, who was previously valued at £100m by the Seagulls, is attracting the interest of a number of Premier League sides, with Chelsea also named as potential suitors, so there may be stiff competition for his signature this month.

Evan Ferguson could be a shrewd signing Spurs

The Irishman has not had much of a look in at Brighton this season, with the report revealing that it is likely he will leave his current club this month, at the very least on a loan deal.

However, there are signs he could go on to achieve great things, having been lauded after scoring a well-taken goal in the FA Cup just under two years ago:

Still only 20-years-old, the youngster could be the type of talismanic striker Tottenham need if he is given a consistent run in the team, having already proven he has a keen eye for goal in the Premier League, scoring six goals in each of his last two seasons.

However, Spurs should look to sign Ferguson on a permanent deal rather than a loan, as there is little point in helping Brighton develop a young player just for him to be sent back.

Jason Holder to sit out Bangladesh's tour of West Indies

Jason Holder will miss Bangladesh’s tour of West Indies, having been granted his request for a period of rest and recovery. He was not part of the 12-man squad named by Cricket West Indies (CWI) for the first Test of that tour, which starts on June 16.Kemar Roach is also not part of this squad, as he recovers from a hamstring injury picked up during his stint with Surrey in England’s County Championship. CWI said Roach will undergo a fitness assessment closer to the game, and be added to the squad if passed fit.The squad, named on Tuesday night, includes three players uncapped in Test cricket in wicketkeeper batter Devon Thomas, left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie and fast bowler Anderson Phillip.Former West Indies great Shivnarine Chanderpaul’s son Tagenarine, a batter, was named a reserve player, alongside fast bowler Shermon Lewis.Allrounder Raymon Reifer, who played his solitary Test till date in December 2017, gets a recall.Thomas, Motie and Phillip have all already debuted for West Indies, but in the white-ball formats. Motie was a reserve player at the T20 World Cup last year, while Phillip was also called up for West Indies’ previous Test assignment: a three-Test home series against England in March, which West Indies won 1-0.Holder and Roach aside, the others to miss out from the squad named for the England series are batter Shamarh Brooks and left-arm spinner Veerasammy Permaul. Brooks had scored 79 runs from five innings in that series at 15.80, while Permaul took five wickets from four innings at 50.80.Holder has been playing cricket relatively non-stop since January, with limited-overs series against Ireland, England and India followed by the England Tests and the IPL, where he turned out for Lucknow Super Giants.Roach was due to spend two months with Surrey, but did damage to his left hamstring in their game against Hampshire in mid-April and has been in recovery since.West Indies’ chief selector Desmond Haynes, explaining the new faces in the squad, said: “Devon Thomas has been knocking on the door for quite some time. He has done extremely well in our franchise cricket system and we view this as a good opportunity to give him a go.”You would notice that Raymon Reifer is also in the squad. He is another person that has done impressively well in the four-day competition and against England [in a tour game]. So again, we are giving opportunities to guys who are performing.”We think Gudakesh Motie is one of those guys who is also bowling well, and we think it will be a good opportunity for him to be involved.”In all Bangladesh play West Indies in two Tests (which count for World Test Championship points), three T20Is and three ODIs between June 16 and July 16.West Indies’ squad for the 1st Test vs Bangladesh: Kraigg Brathwaite (capt), Jermaine Blackwood (vice-capt), Nkrumah Bonner, John Campbell, Joshua Da Silva, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Anderson Phillip, Raymon Reifer, Jayden Seales, Devon Thomas
Reserves: Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Shermon Lewis

Everton made "important bid" to sign massive upgrade on Dwight McNeil

Fair to say, Everton really need to strengthen their attacking options in January.

Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth means the Toffees have not failed to score in eight of their last ten Premier League matches, leaving them just one point and two places above the relegation zone.

Also, as noted during Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, since the start of last season, Everton have scored just 26 goals from open play; for context, that’s a ginormous 30 fewer than the team second-bottom of this list, namely West Ham.

Under Sean Dyche, spending has been very minimal but, following the Friedkin Group’s takeover, confirmed in mid-December, there’s likely to be scope for the Blues to bring in much-needed reinforcements this month.

Premier League player wanted by Everton

As reported by Fabrizio Romano on Twitter earlier this week, Everton had “opened talks” with Aston Villa, as they attempt to sign Jaden Philogene.

However, in a big twist, the player is now on his way to Ipswich Town with Fabrizio Romano having revealed on Wednesday night that he’s due to travel to Portman Road for a medical.

Despite being just 22-years-old, Philogene has already played for Stoke City, Cardiff City, Hull City and now Aston Villa twice.

It was last season, when he was with the Tigers, he really burst onto the scene, scoring an astonishing rabona against Rotherham in February 2024, that was nominated for the FIFA Puskás Award.

This led to journalist Lewis Railton describing him as a “skilful, yet direct winger”, labelling him a “real talent”.

How Jaden Philogene would have improved Everton's attack

Well, since moving back to the Midlands, the winger has been given limited opportunities, starting just four matches across all competitions, totalling 535 minutes overall, yet to register a goal or an assist during his second spell in claret and blue.

Thus, a move away from Villa Park in January could be best for Philogene’s development.

As mentioned earlier, Everton really find goals hard to come by; they’re the lowest scorers in the Premier League this season with just 15 goals, while they’re also bottom of the xG standings, accumulating a miserly 18.1 to date.

Their joint-top scorers are Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye, both with a miserly three goals, so how does Philogene compare to the Toffees’ current wide-attackers?

As outlined, since the start of last season, Philogene compares favourably to Everton’s existing winger options.

He’s scored more goals, registered more progressive carries and attempted more shots than all of the trio, most crucially of all, Philogene has overperformced his xG, while Jack Harrison and Ndiaye have both underperformed theirs.

McNeil, the most impressive of the Toffees’ trio, has missed the last six games due to a knee injury, with Dyche describing this issue as “a bit trickier than we thought”, but even when he was playing regularly, Philogene was outperforming his numbers.

Thus, put succinctly, this is a deal Everton should be gutted about failing to complete.

Asia Cup 2022 likely to be moved from Sri Lanka to UAE

The 2022 Asia Cup may be shifted out of Sri Lanka, even though the nation has successfully hosted a full tour of Australia and is currently hosting a Test series against Pakistan without any major hassles. Sri Lanka Cricket will remain the official host of the Asia Cup, but the tournament, ESPNcricinfo has learned, is set to be played in Dubai and Sharjah between August 27 and September 11. The decision was taken at an Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting this week, which remains concerned by the acute shortage of fuel which has played a big part in grinding Sri Lanka down to a halt.Related

SLC 'very confident' of hosting Asia Cup despite political crisis

Asia Cup to be held in Sri Lanka in August-September 2022

Up until last week, Sri Lanka Cricket was “very confident” of hosting the Asia Cup despite the country’s deepening economic and political crisis. With food supplies drying up, fuel supply being cut to private vehicles, and severe daily power outages, enraged protestors stormed into the residences of Sri Lankan President and Prime Minister demanding a change. The protests, though, did not impact the cricket with Australia spending most of June and a bit of July in the country, wrapping up a full tour which included two Tests, five ODIs and three T20Is. Now, Pakistan are in town to play a two-match Test series in Galle.Hosting bilateral series, though, is very different from hosting a tournament like the Asia Cup, which this time will be played in the T20 format, and will feature as many as nine teams.”Hosting two teams is not the same as hosting ten teams,” SLC chief executive officer Ashley de Silva told ESPNcricinfo on Sunday. “You have to provide ten buses with fuel for all of them. You have to give every team a luggage van with fuel, and transport for the managers. You also have to give the sponsors transport and ensure that they are getting the mileage that they want from their sponsorship. The fuel for the generators to run the floodlights will also have to be found.”The ACC is set to announce the Asia Cup schedule on July 22 and it will likely have India and Pakistan facing each other twice in the league phase. In normal circumstances, several thousand fans from both countries would have been expected to fly to Sri Lanka, but de Silva feared the fuel shortage and the political unrest would be too much of a deterrent.”There are also two India vs Pakistan matches, and there will be people who want to travel and watch those matches. People might not be happy to travel to Sri Lanka because of the situation.” de Silva said. With the operational costs for the Asia Cup borne by ACC, SLC does not stand to lose any revenue, but de Silva did concede that the local economy in Sri Lanka stood to lose substantially with hotels and transport operators missing out.The ACC had limited options regarding back-up venues considering June through September is monsoon season over most of the Indian subcontinent. In terms of the infrastructure and travel, the UAE has proved to be a successful venue, but late August and early September generally witness extreme temperatures of over 40°C with humidity also expected to be a factor. Accordingly, the matches could start early evening. This will be the second time in the last five years that UAE will host the Asia Cup. In 2018, the tournament, played in the 50-overs format, was conducted in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah between September 15-28.

Talks opened as £38m Chelsea "leader" could now leave with Nkunku and Veiga

Chelsea could soon let a plethora of squad members depart Cobham, including Christopher Nkunku and Renato Veiga, but there is now another player who will be allowed to leave if the right January offer arrives.

In the last 48 hours, a plethora of credible reports have revealed that both Veiga and Nkunku could be facing their final days as Chelsea players.

The former, who has been in and out of the Chelsea first-team under Enzo Maresca, playing as a left-back, only joined the Blues last summer in a £12 million deal from FC Basel – putting pen to paper on a seven-year contract.

However, Veiga’s desire to play at centre-back means he’s already agreed personal terms on a January switch to Borussia Dortmund – who have a wonderful track record of developing young stars and are extremely keen on a mid-season deal for the 21-year-old.

Chelsea have already knocked back a loan bid from Wolves, and won’t be entertaining proposals for a temporary transfer of any kind, as they set Veiga’s asking price at around £25 million.

Nkunku, meanwhile, has set his sights on a move to Bayern Munich. The France international is one of Chelsea’s top scorers in all competitions, bagging 13 in all competitions, but Maresca appears to deem him an impact player from the bench when it comes to regular chances in the Premier League.

The bulk of his starts have come in cup competitions, and this doesn’t appear to satisfy the 26-year-old, as Nkunku verbally agrees on a contract to leave Chelsea for Bayern.

Both sides are now in ongoing talks over his transfer to the Allianz Arena (Florian Plettenberg), but Fabrizio Romano says yet another Chelsea player could join Nkunku and Veiga in heading for the exit door.

Chelsea in talks to offload defender Axel Disasi in January

According to Romano, that man is £38 million defender Axel Disasi.

The centre-back, who Maresca has often utilised at full-back when the likes of Malo Gusto and Reece James have been unavailable, is expected to be left out of the squad to play Bournemouth this evening.

Important clubs are in talks to explore a January move for Disasi, as per Romano, after Chelsea held discussions with the Frenchman over his future. Following these conversations with Disasi, the west Londoners are now open to letting him leave before February 3.

Branded a “leader” in the team for some of his performances, Disasi still faces stiff competition for regular playing time, and it appears his exit is now firmly on the cards.

QPR keen on signing young giant who has yet to sign a professional contract

Queens Park Rangers have already added Ronnie Edwards to their side this month, and they now have their eye on another young gem, according to a new report.

QPR transfer news

The Rs have so far only been able to add Edwards to their ranks this month, with the young defender joining on loan from Premier League strugglers Southampton. Given that QPR are now well clear of the relegation zone and only eight points adrift of the playoffs, Marti Cifuentes will have his eye on a few more arrivals to boost those unexpected playoff hopes.

One player who the Rs are interested in signing is Brisbane Roar forward Thomas Waddingham. It was reported last week that QPR and Sheffield Wednesday want to bring the striker to England and have both made offers for his services. However, Waddingham, who is out of contract in 2026, looks set to snub both of them and join Portsmouth, as the South Coast side have an agreement in place for his transfer.

The Hoops will look to move on and find other potential targets, but in more positive news for the club, they are interested in signing Greg Taylor from Celtic. The defender is out of contract at the end of the season, and QPR, as well as Hull City, are targeting a move for the player, who still remains in talks over a new deal with the Scottish champions.

QPR keen on signing young gem who has yet to sign a professional contract

As well as looking to improve their defence with the addition of Taylor, Football Insider reports that QPR are interested in signing young defender Timothy Akindileni from Aberdeen.

The 17-year-old only joined the Dons in September 2023 after impressing on a trial period with the club. The young defender has been playing for the club’s under-18s, performing well in the UEFA Youth League and Challenge Cup, and he has also appeared on the bench a couple of times for Aberdeen’s first team.

But given his age, Akindileni has yet to sign a professional contract with the Scottish side, and that news has alerted the interest of QPR. The fact that he is not under contract means the Rs could sign the defender, who stands at 6 foot 4 inches, for a tiny cross-border compensation fee.

Aberdeen may hope the fact that the player is a boyhood fan of the Scottish side can help them retain his services, but the chance to play in England may be too good to turn down. The Championship side have a good record of giving young players a chance in the first team, with the likes of Ilias Chair and Eberechi Eze the standout graduates, and this may help persuade Akindileni to make the move to West London.

Should he move to QPR, he would have to compete against the likes of Jimmy Dunne, Jake Clarke-Salter, Steve Cook, Liam Morrison and Edwards for a starting spot at centre-back.

Dream 1st Amorim signing: Man Utd can axe Zirkzee for the next Ibrahimovic

With the New Year on the horizon, those of a Manchester United persuasion will no doubt be looking to forget 2024 in a hurry, with it having been a simply miserable 12 months at Old Trafford on the whole.

The notable high point came at Wembley back in May, yet that shock FA Cup final triumph has been quickly forgotten amid the club’s woes both prior and since, with manager Erik ten Hag shown the door just a matter of months after lifting the trophy.

New boss Ruben Amorim has arrived with bold new ideas and an engaging personality, although as recent results have shown, it has largely been more of the same for a side that still languishes in 13th in the Premier League table.

Just a month or so into the Portuguese’s tenure, the Red Devils reached their latest nadir following Sunday’s grim 3-0 defeat at home to Bournemouth, with that result laying bare just where the three-time European champions are at present.

Seven goals conceded across their last two games in all competitions may point to worrying issues defensively, although it is the attacking unit which remains a “major problem” – as noted by journalist Liam Canning.

Man Utd's attacking woes

It says a lot that the Old Trafford side meekly capitulating on home soil no longer sends shockwaves across the game. In truth, defeats like the one to the Cherries have simply become the norm over the last 18 months or so.

This season alone, the Red Devils have now lost 3-0 on three occasions at the Theatre of Dreams, having also wilted up against Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to mark the beginning of the end for Ten Hag.

Again, the defence will cop much of the blame for those dismal results, but the lack of goals has become a real concern of late. Indeed, United have scored just 21 league goals thus far, leaving them level with the likes of Leicester City, while even behind relegation strugglers, Wolverhampton Wanderers (27).

Those woes were even evident at the weekend, with the hosts registering 23 shots in total and finishing with an xG of 2.28. Bournemouth, meanwhile, had just ten shots and finished with an xG of only 1.63, as per Sofascore.

As Amorim lamented after the defeat to Spurs in the Carabao Cup, his side simply just aren’t “clinical” enough, with the lack of a reliable number nine still a significant issue.

Indeed, while young Rasmus Hojlund has scored seven goals in 20 appearances in 2024/24 thus far, only two of those have come in his 12 league outings.

As for summer signing Joshua Zirkzee, the Dutchman has had an even worse time of it, netting only four times in 25 appearances since his arrival from Bologna.

The return of the latter man, in particular, simply isn’t good enough, with a swift upgrade needing to be found to resolve what has long been a problem position at Old Trafford.

Man Utd's search for a striker

Back at Sporting CP, Amorim’s success was built on the strength of his leading goalscorer, with Viktor Gyokeres scoring 66 goals in just 68 games during their time together in Lisbon.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As a result of that fruitful partnership, there will be clamour for a reunion to occur between the pair in Manchester, although according to recent reports, United could well look elsewhere to make a dream first signing of the Amorim era.

Indeed, there have been claims that the Red Devils are among the clubs keen to sign Nigerian sensation, Victor Osimhen, with the 26-year-old currently on loan at Galatasaray from parent club, Napoli.

Reportedly valued at around £62m, the former Chelsea target could make a belated move to the Premier League after a Stamford Bridge switch broke down over the summer, with the striker’s capture likely to be just what United are craving to end their goalscoring woes.

Why Osimhen would be a dream signing for Man Utd

The former Lille man may now be operating outside of Europe’s top five leagues in Turkey, yet it is hard to overlook his goalscoring prowess, having already bagged 12 goals in just 15 games during his time in Istanbul.

That haul ensures he has scored more times than Zirkzee and Hojlund combined in 2024/25 thus far, with the young pair netting just 11 goals between them across all competitions.

This red-hot form follows a prolific spell back in Naples for Osimhen, with the in-demand hotshot having netted 76 times in just 133 games for the Serie A side. In total across his career, the £62m man has scored 126 goals from 238 senior appearances.

To put that into context, Hojlund has scored just 50 senior goals in his career thus far, while Zirkzee’s record is even worse, having scored just 40 times (not including his stint with Bayern Munich’s second team).

The difference in quality between Zirkzee and Osimhen is stark indeed, as evidenced by their respective statistics in Italy’s top-flight last term, with Osimhen simply far more clinical, even if Zirkzee offers a greater creative influence. Amorim needs to ensure this deal gets done as a matter of urgency.

There will no doubt be fears over whether the Napoli man can make the transition to life in the Premier League, although any concerns should be eased by his likeness to a certain Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with that comparison having been made by his former Charleroi manager Felice Mazzu:

While Ibrahimovic’s time at Old Trafford was fleeting, the veteran certainly made his mark under Jose Mourinho, having ended the 2016/17 campaign with 28 goals to his name in 46 appearances.

As that short but sweet stint proved, players of that ilk can score goals anywhere without the need for a period of adjustment, with United – and Amorim – in need of a repeat scenario with the capture of Osimhen.

For too long, since the days of ‘Ibra’ and Robin van Persie before him, have the Red Devils been seeking a genuine world-beater to lead the line. Now is the time to go out and get one.
