Marseille want to follow controversial deal with bid for Wolves star

Having already lost Max Kilman to West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers could now suffer a second major exit this summer following a bid from Ligue 1 outfit Marseille.

Wolves transfer news

Kilman's exit aside, it's been a fairly productive summer window for Wolves so far. The Midlands club have welcomed four fresh faces, including Jorgen Strand Larsen in their most impressive deal so far. The Celta Vigo forward arrives looking to boost Gary O'Neil's attacking options even further following a season in which Wolves' frontline found their goalscoring boots.

The arrival of an attacking boost doesn't take away from the void left behind by Kilman, however, who swapped the Midlands for London and West Ham United. The central defender captained Wolves last season to complete quite the rise from their academy into their leading centre-back. Now, they've been left to fill quite the gap and could yet suffer a second major blow this summer.

Wolves could sign perfect Kilman replacement for just £10m

He wants to get the move to Molineux

ByJoe Nuttall Jul 11, 2024

According to Lyall Thomas of Sky Sports, Marseille have submitted their first bid to sign Hwang Hee-chan this summer. Wolves have reportedly reiterated that he is not for sale, but the interest in his signature should certainly spark plenty of concern.

Roberto De Zerbi's new club have just agreed a controversial deal to sign Mason Greenwood from Manchester United – a move the French city's own mayor has publicly spoken against – and are hoping to add a second Premier League attacker to their ranks soon.

Whilst Larsen did arrive to hand O'Neil attacking depth, losing Hwang would somewhat turn what is currently a sharp frontline at Molineux fairly blunt following such an impressive season. Keeping hold of the South Korean amid such interest should be seen as a priority at Wolves for the rest of the summer transfer window.

Why "impressive" Hwang is not for sale

Wolves' stance on Hwang is hardly a surprise, even if he did struggle with injuries at times last season. When fit, he has remained firing in clinical fashion in the Midlands and O'Neil will be desperate for that to continue next season, having been full of praise for the forward in the last campaign.

wolves-hwang-hee-chan-pedro-neto

O'Neil said via The National: "The numbers are incredibly impressive. Everything about him is impressive, will he continue at this rate for the rest of the season? I hope so.

"If the team can keep performing. When the ball falls to him in the penalty area I have a really good feeling he will be in the right area. It’s no fluke he has as many goals as he has, he’s bought in fully to what we’re trying to do. He arrives in good areas time and time again."

What instantly stands out is just how good a finisher Hwang is, scoring 12 goals from an expected 7.7 last season. It's the type of ruthlessness that could yet see Wolves take their biggest step yet under O'Neil next season.

Rangers star agrees “astronomical” offer to leave Ibrox and join Gerrard

An "exceptional" Rangers player has agreed an "astronomical" deal to leave Ibrox this summer and join up with former manager Steven Gerrard, according to a fresh update.

Summer of change at Rangers

Euro 2024 may be taking centre stage in the footballing world, but Philippe Clement has been having an extremely productive summer transfer window to date, already bringing in a number of new faces.

The likes of Jefte, Connor Barron, Liam Kelly and Clinton Nsiala have all arrived on permanent deals, while Oscar Cortes will spend another season on loan at Ibrox, having arrived from Lens during the January window.

Oscar Cortes

It looks as though Rangers' business is far from done, with attacker Hamza Igamane seen as the next man to come in, arriving from Moroccan outfit AS FAR.

The Scottish Premiership giants have also been linked with a move for Tottenham ace Ryan Sessegnon, whose career has dipped after emerging as a hugely exciting teenager, but who could be desperate for a new challenge. He is considered someone who could provide further quality out wide alongside Cortes, too.

This has also been a summer of change when it comes to outgoings at Rangers, with a host of players moving on when their contracts expire, from Ryan Jack to Kemar Roofe. Now, another exit claim has emerged – and one that is likely to worry the supporters.

"Exceptional" Rangers hero on the move

According to a new development courtesy of Football Insider, James Tavernier has agreed to leave Rangers and join Gerrard at Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq, with an "astronomical" deal on the table.

The update claims that the "package in question is believed to 'massively' increase" the Gers captain's wages, and the player himself "has accepted the contract offer".

This is undoubtedly bad news for Rangers fans, considering Tavernier has arguably been the most impressive player at Ibrox over many years, providing a remarkable amount of end product from right-back.

Granted, the Englishman's numbers are aided by the fact that he takes penalties, but a tally of 125 goals and 129 assists in 460 appearances are the kind of statistics that a striker would be happy to register in his career. Clement waxed lyrical over him last season after he recorded the highest number of assists for a British defender:

"To be there on top – it’s an amazing achievement and we’re all proud of him. I said it in the dressing room also after the game. I don’t too often point out individual players, I don’t like it too much, but I had to do it this time. All the players are really proud of him, all the staff and the fans and everybody involved with Rangers. It’s really quite exceptional."

"Highly-rated" prospect has now "picked Rangers" over team worth £2.1bn

The update comes from reliable reporter Fabrizio Romano.

ByHenry Jackson Jun 28, 2024

At 32, Tavernier isn't getting any younger, so those of a more optimistic persuasion could point towards Rangers getting good money for an ageing player, but he is going to be extremely difficult to replace, both in terms of quality and leadership.

Beuran Hendricks, Keegan Petersen withdrawn from South Africa Test squad

Beuran Hendricks and Keegan Petersen have been withdrawn from South Africa’s Test squad to play Sri Lanka.Neither player entered the tour bubble when the playing group convened on Saturday, after two positive Covid-19 results were detected last week. CSA cannot, for reasons of doctor-patient confidentiality, name who the infected players are.The other 17 squad members have tested negative on all three occasions, thus making the environment bio-secure. South Africa will not add any players to the squad for the two-Test series which starts on Boxing Day.Having cleared three rounds of testing, South Africa can begin training as a full squad on Wednesday after having staggered sessions so far. They will also no longer be confined to their hotel rooms at the Irene Country Club and can use communal areas, with social distancing rules in place, but will not come into contact with Sri Lanka, who are housed at the same venue. In addition, they will not be permitted to leave the venue except to travel to SuperSport Park and the Wanderers for the duration of the series.Related

Cricket South Africa have enforced stricter controls for this series than they did for the England tour – in which players were allowed to play golf at various courses around the Western Cape province – both at the behest of Sri Lanka Cricket and because the England tour was unsuccessful.Three South African players tested positive for Covid-19 – one before the tour, one after entering the bubble and one after the T20 series – as did two hotel staff, and the one-day series was postponed. Two members of England’s touring party also tested positive although, on verification, their results were confirmed as false positives. South Africa, who are also due to host Australia this summer, need the Sri Lanka series to take place without incident to get their international hosting back on track. For that reason, they pushed the final round of domestic first-class matches, which were due to start last Sunday, into next year following positive cases in two of the three matches that began on December 13. Hendricks, Petersen and eight other players in the national squad were part of two of those games. At SuperSport Park, the match between the Titans and the Dolphins was called off after the first day because a Dolphins’ players tested positive while in Bloemfontein, the game between the Knights and the Lions continued despite a Lions’ player testing positive on day three. Several more Dolphins and Lions players were also found to be infected. The impact has been felt by the national squad who have lost at least one certain starter for the Sri Lanka Tests. Hendricks, who has only played one Test, would most likely have been the third seamer in the absence of the injured Kagiso Rabada. Hendricks debuted at the Wanderers last summer and took six wickets in the match, including 5 for 64 in the second innings, and is familiar with conditions up-country, having made the Lions his domestic home. Instead, South Africa will rely on Lungi Ngidi and Anrich Nortje for experience and could hand a debut to Glenton Stuurman, Migael Pretorius or Lutho Sipamla.Petersen was less likely to play than Hendricks but, after three summers averaging over 50 domestically, he made a strong case to be considered at No.3. He should also have been the next man in line after being a non-playing member of the squad last season but will have to make way for one of Sarel Erwee, Raynard van Tonder or Kyle Verreynne for now.Updated squad: Quinton de Kock, Temba Bavuma, Aiden Markram, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Rassie van der Dussen, Anrich Nortje, Glenton Stuurman, Sarel Erwee, Wiaan Mulder, Kyle Verreynne, Migael Pretorius, Dwaine Pretorius, Lutho Sipamla, Raynard van Tonder

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Pulisic has registered seven goals and three assists this term, while continuing to fill skipper duties for the United States, and is considered to be in the form of his life. The question now being asked is: Does ‘Captain America’ sit among the global elite?

  • WHAT KLJESTAN SAID

When that question was put to Sacha Kljestan, the former USMNT midfielder told Alexi Lalas’ podcast: "World class? At the moment, right now, I’d say he is world class. In general, I would say he’s a top-50 player in the world. I do think he’s the best player in Serie A right now as far as form goes – he has been on fire. Statistics will back that up, just with the way that he’s putting the ball in the back of the net and setting up team-mates. I think the challenge then is to try and lead AC Milan to a Serie A title and success in the Champions League. Those are big expectations, but that is what happens when you play for a big, historic club such as AC Milan."

Kljestan, who once played alongside Pulisic, added: "I’m just a fan of him. His first five games for the national team were about my last five games for the national team. Even at 17 years old you could realise how good he was. The biggest compliment I could give him back then is that he was so easy to play with – he understood the game at a really high level and you could just tell that he had something different to any other American player at that time."

Levy prepared to pay full £60 million price to sign star for Tottenham

Tottenham and chairman Daniel Levy are willing to pay £60 million for an "ice-cold" forward, which would be enough to complete a deal.

Spurs expected to make more attacking signings

Timo Werner comes as Spurs' first outright attacking addition of this summer, with the German putting pen to paper on a loan extension which will see him remain in north London until the end of next season.

Postecoglou really wants £35 million star at Tottenham with talks ongoing

The Australian is personally eyeing a move.

1 ByEmilio Galantini Jul 9, 2024

The new deal includes an £8.5 million option to buy him outright next summer, as widely reported, which is some way below the £15 million buy clause which Spurs originally agreed with Leipzig in January.

While Werner is staying is undoubtedly good news for Ange Postecoglou, who keeps a versatile and pacey forward tailor-made to his interchangeable system, it remains the case that Spurs are in the market for new attackers.

Tottenham are believed to be contenders for the signing of Desire Doue from Rennes, among others, as technical director Johan Lange and Levy scour the market for exciting forwards.

Athletic Bilbao starlet Nico Williams is another player of interest to Spurs, coming after a phenomenal campaign in Spain where he racked up 19 assists in all competitions. As well as the 21-year-old and Doue, players closer to home in Wolves winger Pedro Neto and Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze have been mentioned as well.

The latter, who is currently representing England at Euro 2024, enjoyed a brilliant season at Palace last term – bagging 11 goals and six assists in all competitions under Roy Hodgson and Oliver Glasner.

Palace have already lost Michael Olise to Bayern Munich, and there is a growing number of clubs eyeing up a move for defender Marc Guehi, following his impressive campaign at the Euros.

Eze could well join both Guehi and Olise out the door, given the attacker's contract includes a £60 million release clause which would render Palace powerless to stop his exit from Selhurst Park.

Tottenham prepared to trigger £60 million release clause for Eze

According to The Sun, Tottenham are willing spend £60 million to trigger Eze's release clause, with league champions Man City willing to do exactly the same thing.

This would make the "ice-cold" 25-year-old one of Spurs' most expensive ever signings, showing just how highly they rate the former QPR star. Interestingly, pundit Alan Hutton has previously backed Levy to pay £60m for Eze.

Spurs-Eze-Postecoglou

“He just goes out and plays with a smile on his face, he plays with a lot of freedom and he’s got so much attacking quality," said Hutton to Tottenham News.

"He can score goals, he can assist, these are the type of guys you need and he’s been rewarded for his good form by being picked for the England squad.

“I think he could go and be a shining star so £60million is right. You look at some of the prices that are getting banded around now for players that aren’t as good, so I can understand that. If he’s going to be available for that price, I think Levy will spend it.”

Nathan Lyon has 'a couple more things up our sleeve' to test Cheteshwar Pujara

Daniel Brettig23-Dec-2020In the wake of Virat Kohli’s departure for India, the years-long battle between Nathan Lyon and Cheteshwar Pujara will take on still greater significance, after they teased and feinted each other in an absorbing day-one encounter in Adelaide.Lyon, who is closing fast on 400 Test wickets and will play his 100th Test in the final match of the series, said he was eager to recommence the contest with Pujara and hinted at further plans for India’s No. 3 should he again get established for a long innings on Boxing Day at the MCG.Related

David Warner ruled out of Boxing Day Test

“Pujara is a world-class batter and he’s going to be a big challenge for us for the rest of the series,” he said. “We spoke about him in depth before the series started, it was good to see a couple of plans come off in Adelaide, but we’ve got a couple more things up our sleeve hopefully that if he does get in we can put in to deploy. He’s a world-class batter so it’s always fun challenging yourself against the best players in the world and Pujara’s definitely one of those guys.”India will probably look to try to attack me again, especially when you look at the quality of the quick bowlers we’ve got here in the Australian side. So I think it’s one of their tactics to come at me, which is totally fine, I’m pretty used to having guys come after me but it’s just about, for me, being able to know when to attack and when to defend as well and realise who I’m bowling with at the other end and having that partnership. So it’s all fun and part of playing cricket, especially being a little spin bowler, you’re going to have a lot of guys come out and try to attack you.”

“That was one of the days when nothing went right for them and everything went right for us. So we’ve all had them, it’s part of the game of cricket”Nathan Lyon on India’s 36 all out

Lyon explained that he had worked on the pace of his deliveries over several years, quickening up by a few kilometres in part to make it more difficult for batsmen to run down the pitch to him in the fashion Pujara has favoured.”I think I’ve been trying to work on that for many years now with John Davison, who is the guy I go to a lot about my spin bowling,” Lyon said. “I think it really depends on who you’re bowling to and the conditions, so I think over the last four or five years my pace has probably gone up a couple of kilometres.”But I think it’s more about the shape you’re able to generate on the ball, if I’m being honest. I think that’s the most crucial thing – you can bowl at any pace but if you can have that shape on the ball that’s going to be the most dangerous thing. It’s something I’ve been working on for a few years now and hopefully keep getting better with it.”‘You can bowl at any pace but if you can have that shape on the ball that’s going to be the most dangerous thing’•Getty ImagesThere were, Lyon said, numerous technical “tells” that batsmen offer to indicate they are going to come down the pitch, something he has watched while entering his delivery stride. “I think it’s all about getting the right pace for the conditions but it’s also looking at little keys,” he said. “I can’t really reveal them but I know there’s a few different guys who have different techniques when they come down so they actually have different triggers as well. So as a bowler you’re always looking out for these little triggers that hopefully you can get one step ahead of them.”So there’s something I’ve noticed in a couple of guys that they change a little bit when they want to come down the wicket, so it’s all part of bowling spin, you’ve got to try to take note of these little things and make sure you’re bowling your best ball no matter what.”As for whether India would be able to recover from being shot out for 36 in Adelaide, Lyon reflected on his own experience of the 2011 Cape Town Test – when he top scored in an Australian total of just 47 before the touring team beat South Africa in Johannesburg to square the series – as an example of how the game can turn.”That was one of the days when nothing went right for them and everything went right for us,” Lyon said. “So we’ve all had them, it’s part of the game of cricket.”

Charm offensive: Spurs move for ideal Son heir in £42m "entertainer"

There's just under a month until the summer transfer window slams shut this year, and while some clubs are fumbling around yet to make much of an impact, Tottenham Hotspur seem to know exactly what they're doing.

Daniel Levy and Co signed the incredibly exciting Archie Gray for £30m at the start of this month and just completed the signing of South Korean youngster Yang Min-Hyeok, who's set to join the team in January.

This determination to invest in youth is an exciting indicator of the club's future ambitions, and based on recent reports, they're targeting at least one more highly-rated teenager this summer, a prospect who could be the perfect long-term replacement for Son Heung-min.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, Tottenham have maintained their interest in French wonderkid Desire Doue.

The report has revealed that the Lilywhites have been on the charm offensive in a bid to persuade him to come to North London, showing him the path he'd have to the first team, although due to the level of interest in his services, they have found it challenging to do so thus far.

No price is mentioned in the report, but stories from earlier this month claimed that the Stade Rennais gem would be available for around £42m.

Rennes midfielder Desire Doue

It will be an expensive and challenging deal to get over the line, but given his quality and potential, Levy and Co should do what they can to bring him to N17 this summer, as he could be the ideal heir to Son.

Why Doue would be the ideal Son heir

So, the first thing to clear up here is that while Son is 32 years old and therefore has a limited amount of time at the top left, he's still more than capable of leading this Spurs side, as he demonstrated last season.

Heung-min Son for Tottenham

In just 36 appearances, the Chuncheon-born winger scored 17 goals and provided ten assists, equating to a remarkable average of a goal involvement every 1.33 games, and while he looks more than capable of doing something similar next season, father time catches up with us all.

For example, an article from The Athletic a few years ago looked at when players in different positions hit their peak, and according to that, a winger's peak is around 26.

Now, while the former Bayer Leverkusen ace may well maintain his impressive form for another couple of years, it would make sense to bring in Doue as his long-term heir as, despite being just 19 years old, he already looked unreal.

For example, in 42 first-team appearances last season, 13 of which came on the left wing, the Angers-born "entertainer", as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, scored four goals and provided six assists, equating to an average of one every 4.2 games, which for someone so young is undeniably impressive.

Moreover, according to FBref, which compares players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the Rennais prospect sits in the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers for progressive passes and successful take-ons per 90, indicating that the youngster has already mastered some elements of his position.

Ultimately, Doue is a young and relatively inexperienced player, while Son is still performing at a high level. However, the former looks to have all the ingredients to eventually take over from the latter on Spurs' left-hand side, and therefore, Levy and Co should be doing all they can to convince him to move to the White side of North London this summer.
