O São Paulo se reforçou bastante para a temporada de 2021. Além da chegada do treinador Hernán Crespo, o time contratou sete jogadores.

Graeme Souness labels Man Utd 'FC Hollywood' as he claims Kobbie Mainoo should not be starting every game after being 'run over' by Liverpool

Graeme Souness labelled Manchester United as "FC Hollywood" and questioned Kobbie Mainoo's starting role after he was "run over" by Liverpool.

  • Souness slammed Man Utd after Liverpool thrashing
  • Mainoo struggling to revive his form from last season
  • An error on his part led to the third Liverpool goal
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Mainoo was a revelation for United last season with several scintillating performances in midfield. He even netted the FA Cup winner against Manchester City at Wembley and was so impressive in the run-up to the final that Gareth Southgate included him in the Three Lions squad for the European Championship in Germany.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

However, following United’s recent 3-0 loss to bitter rivals Liverpool, Souness expressed his concerns about the 19-year-old’s role in the team, suggesting that the teenager is being burdened with too much responsibility too soon. He argued that Mainoo, while a promising talent, is not yet ready to be a regular starter for a club like United and it is unfair to expect a player of his age and experience to be the talisman at the centre of the park.

  • WHAT SOUNESS SAID

In an interview with , the Liverpool legend said: "I have to say this, I'm not being unkind, Mainoo might be a player, but it's so Man United. This is not to be critical of Man United, it's never been any different. But when someone comes on the scene at Man United, in my days they were the 'new George Best', or the 'new Bobby Charlton', the 'new Denis Law'. It is FC Hollywood, they call Bayern Munich in Germany 'FC Hollywood', that's Man United here. If anyone shows anything, they're put into the superstardom category, way before they've even become a good player."

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Souness believes that Mainoo, while undoubtedly talented, should be playing a rotational role as he matures and gains experience.

"Mainoo right now should be a player that's flitting in and out of a good team – not coming in and being asked to stand up and play against the very best teams," he said. He might be a player one day, but he's certainly not the go-to man at United like they're making him out to be in midfield. They got ran over, they were not in the game yesterday."

The numbers support Souness’s argument, as Mainoo’s appearances this season have coincided with a string of poor results for Manchester United. Out of the four games he has played so far, United have lost three, including the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City.

Newcastle struck gold on "phenomenal" ace who’s worth more than Trippier

Newcastle United's injury troubles this season have been well documented, with Eddie Howe's side struggling to replicate the results of last campaign as a result.

The Magpies produced a sensational season during 2022/23, which saw the club claim a place in the Premier League's top four, qualifying automatically for the Champions League group stages.

Howe's side were placed in the group of death, alongside AC Milan, PSG and Borussia Dortmund, with the latter in the final facing Real Madrid at Wembley in just a few weeks.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe

However, the added fixtures, coupled with Newcastle's thin squad, have highlighted the Magpies' need for extra bodies this summer, with Howe often resorting to more inexperienced players to fill the void.

One of which has taken his chance in the first-team with both hands, including an excellent display against Brighton and Hove Albion at St James' Park on Saturday.

Elliot Anderson's stats vs Brighton & Hove Albion

Youngster Elliot Anderson was handed another start against Roberto De Zerbi's side, producing an excellent display – one that will certainly keep him within Howe's plans for next season.

The Scotsman started alongside Bruno Guimaraes and goalscorer Sean Longstaff, with the 21-year-old demonstrating his qualities.

Newcastle midfielder Elliot Anderson.

He provided the assist for Longstaff's first-half goal, before running the show in the heart of Howe's midfield – a really impressive feat for such a young player.

Anderson also managed 75 touches during his 90-minute display, completing 43 passes at a completion rate of 90% – the second-most of any Newcastle player during the draw.

Whilst he's primarily an attacking-minded midfielder, the youngster also excelled defensively for Howe's side, winning ten duels during the 1-1 draw.

He also won one tackle and two clearances, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Seagulls from finding the back of the net on Tyneside.

Anderson was subsequently awarded a 7/10 match rating by Chronicle Live journalist Lee Ryder, with the midfielder producing one of his performances of the season.

Elliot Anderson's market value in 2024

As a result of his impressive performances under Howe in recent months, the midfielder has seen his market value take a sharp increase.

According to Transfermarkt, the "phenomenal" youngster, as dubbed by former Rovers teammate Alex Rodman, currently has a market value of £11m, a figure that is higher than captain Kieran Trippier, with the 33-year-old now only worth £9m, despite registering ten league assists this season.

Anderson's rapid rise has seen his value increase from £6.8m – a huge jump of 63% over the last nine months despite his injury struggles this campaign.

Newcastle midfielder Elliot Anderson.

The Scotsman has missed 17 Premier League games with a back injury this term but has kept himself fit over the last few weeks – with the youngster being rewarded with a consistent run in the first-team.

Whilst the club are expected to strengthen once more this summer, Anderson has definitely staked his claim for a spot under Howe once more next season, potentially saving the club a lot of money in their battle to stay within the league's strict FFP rules.

Free transfer: Liverpool eyeing move to sign £50,000-a-week player for Slot

Liverpool are reportedly one of a number of clubs keen on signing a "fantastic" player in the summer transfer window, seeing him as a possible replacement for a current hero.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds continue to be linked with a host of new players to take the club forward after Jurgen Klopp leaves this summer, with Arne Slot on course to be the new manager at Anfield.

West Ham attacker Mohammed Kudus is one player who has been linked with an exciting move to Anfield at the end of the season, having impressed for the Hammers during his first year at the club. The Ghana star has bagged seven goals and six assists in the Premier League in 2023/24, linking effectively with the likes of Lucas Paqueta, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio.

West Ham forward Mohammed Kudus.

A shock rumour has also emerged linking Liverpool with former Everton winger Anthony Gordon, who has impressed since trading Goodison Park for Newcastle United. He is also pushing hard to be a part of England's squad at Euro 2024, meriting a place out on the left-hand side more than the likes of Marcus Rashford and Jack Grealish, both of whom have had quiet campaigns.

In terms of younger potential signings, teenage Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg is reportedly wanted by the Reds this summer, with the 16-year-old already a fixture in the squad at the Stadium of Light, appearing 21 times in the Championship this summer.

Liverpool eyeing free transfer for Alex McCarthy

According to a new update from The Daily Mail, Liverpool could look to sign Southampton goalkeeper Alex McCarthy this summer for free, should Caoimhin Kelleher move on. The Irishman may want to be a No.1 elsewhere, with Celtic emerging as an option for him, among other clubs.

The report states that the Englishman, who will be a free agent this summer as things stand, "is emerging as a summer option for Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic as well as Liverpool and Newcastle United, adding that the Premier League pair are "monitoring developments with McCarthy as they draw up shortlists for back-up keepers."

McCarthy could be an ideal backup option to Alisson if Kelleher does opt for a fresh challenge this summer, ticking so many boxes when it comes to what Liverpool are looking for.

Firstly, he is a homegrown player, helping ensure that the Reds meet their quota, but he now also possesses a huge amount of experience in English football. He has made 147 appearances in the Premier League, not to mention being capped once for England, and Southampton manager Russell Martin said of him after Sunday's 0-0 draw at West Brom:

"He's been great. He was massive today, (he has great with) long throws and the way he came and dealt with things. The last two weeks I’ve loved the way we’ve defended. I just don't think anything phases him. He has that laid-back mentality but he really backs himself as a goalkeeper. He has been fantastic."

At 34, the £50,000-a-week McCarthy may be content to warm the substitutes' bench at a huge club most weeks at this point in his career, but he would still have chances to shine in cup competitions, and also likely in the league, given Alisson's slightly injury-prone nature.

Tottenham ready to submit bid for "priceless" star as soon as season ends

Following a mixed first season under Ange Postecoglou, reports indicate that Tottenham Hotspur are set to instantly back the Australian by launching a first bid in an attempt to start the summer transfer window with a bang.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites showed plenty of glimpses of their quality throughout the campaign, but ultimately saw injuries and poor form at the worst stage catch up to cost them a place in the Premier League's top four. Defeat against Manchester City particularly frustrated Postecoglou, who was left questioning the mentality of the North London club amid fan desire to help the Manchester club on their fight for the Premier League title against Arsenal.

It's a foundation that the former Celtic boss will be desperate to change and the summer transfer window should at least help build towards that, especially if Spurs' bid for one target is successful.

The Blues reportedly wanted to sign the target last summer…

ByJoe Nuttall May 18, 2024

According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Spurs are ready to launch their first bid for Conor Gallagher as soon as next week with their attention turned towards the Chelsea midfielder following the end of the Premier League campaign.

As their London rivals look to avoid FFP punishment, they may be left with little choice but to sell a homegrown player in Gallagher this summer. Out of contract next summer too, Chelsea are running out of time to cash in on Gallagher, which should hand Spurs the perfect advantage in negotiations this summer. When the window swings open, the North London club could kick things off with a bang by dealing their rivals an instant blow.

"Priceless" Gallagher would unleash Maddison

As encouraging as James Maddison's first season in a Spurs shirt was, he still lacked consistency at times as the Lilywhites attempted to balance things in the middle of the park. Ultimately, it is a balance that rarely came in the second-half of the season, but that's where Gallagher could come in this summer.

The England international would be the perfect partner to Maddison's attacking vision, providing the presence in both boxes that they've lacked at times as an all-action midfielder. Off the ball, especially, Gallagher has all the traits needed to slot straight into Postecoglou's tireless system.

Going forward, Gallagher's output has been impressive throughout the season, with the same number of goal involvements as Maddison, but it's his work across the pitch that stands out most. As Postecoglou looks to transform Spurs into a side with a certain intensity and into a side who will outrun every side they play, a midfielder who excels in recovering possession is key. And Gallagher is exactly that.

Previously described as "priceless" by Mauricio Pochettino, the Englishman could yet get even better if he completes a move to North London this summer.

Sri Lanka v Bangladesh three-Test series to begin on October 24

All three matches likely to take place in Colombo; Bangladesh high-performance squad to travel too

Mohammad Isam12-Aug-2020Bangladesh’s first three-Test series in six years has been confirmed, with the BCB saying that its Test squad, as well as the high-performance side, are going to leave for Colombo on September 23 or 24. The board has also said that it will bear the expenses of the two travelling squads for the first three weeks of the tour, leading in to the first Test starting October 24.The pre-Test stint in Sri Lanka is likely to serve as a quarantine period, with the Sri Lankan government insisting on a 14-day quarantine for all new arrivals. Already there are arrangements for arrivals to undergo quarantine in hotels.Akram Khan, the BCB cricket operations chairman, confirmed that the tour would include three Tests, which could all take place in Colombo. The board has also proposed a three-match T20I series, but it is unlikely to be held. “It is exciting to play three Tests but it will also be a difficult time as they [the players] haven’t played in last five or six months,” Khan told ESPNcricinfo. “They will also have to go through a lot of testing [for the coronavirus]. We are hopeful that it all goes well and according to plan.”We will bear the costs of the first three weeks of the tour, including the High Performance side, which was also scheduled a tour to Sri Lanka in July. Now both teams will travel together and play matches during the initial period.”The tour could also mark Shakib Al Hasan’s return to the Bangladesh side as his suspension is set to end on October 29.On Tuesday, Sri Lanka Cricket announced the postponement of the Lanka Premier League until mid-November on account of the mandatory 14-day quarantine for anyone arriving on the island, which would lengthen the competition. As for the bilateral series, SLC chief de Silva had said the boards were still undecided on the tour schedule and the fate of the T20Is. “It is more or less [finalised],” de Silva told the Dhaka-based TV channel Maasranga. “We are actually negotiating. They [BCB] want to play three T20Is and three Tests.”So we are actually negotiating with them to reduce one Test and then play the T20Is. We will be able to confirm it within a day or two.”

Dom Sibley, Ben Stokes steel England after early drama

Pair put on unbroken stand of 126 for fourth wicket to guide hosts out of trouble on opening day

The Report by Valkerie Baynes16-Jul-2020

Dom Sibley and Ben Stokes ground out a 100-run stand•Pool via Getty Images

It was slow, steady and sensible after England’s difficult start – on and off the field.Dom Sibley’s 86 not out, amid an unbroken 126-run stand for the fourth wicket with Ben Stokes, rescued his side from 81 for 3 and put them in a far more comfortable position at the close than appeared likely earlier in the first day of a must-win match for the hosts.ALSO READ: Archer dropped after breach of biosecurity protocolsIt was a day when the drama of Jofra Archer’s match-morning omission dominated the narrative, after the revelation that he had breached biosecurity protocols by stopping at his house in Brighton en route from Southampton to Manchester. But Sibley did the needful for England in the face of a West Indies bowling performance which stuttered, then contained the hosts before running into serious resistance as Sibley and Stokes saw their side to stumps still only three wickets down.It could have been so much worse for England when they lost Rory Burns, Zak Crawley and Joe Root cheaply.Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bowl first in hopes of making the most of gloomy overhead conditions when play finally began 90 minutes late due to the mop-up operation required to deal with a wet lead-up to the match. Both sides took a knee in support of the Black Lives Matter movement, as they had done in Southampton, before play began.Holder played around with his attack in the hour of play to lunch, replacing Shannon Gabriel and Kemar Roach after just three overs each with himself and Alzarri Joseph. That was after Gabriel had looked uncomfortable in his run-up and out of rhythm. Roach, meanwhile, toiled hard for no reward once more.Gabriel – player of the match at the Ageas Bowl where his nine wickets, including a five-for in England’s second innings, helped West Indies to victory and a 1-0 series lead – returned with more control after the lunch break for another four-over spell. But he limped from the field with an apparent hamstring problem, returning in the evening session but without making any inroads in three more overs.Roach, who is only seven away from claiming 200 Test scalps, remains wicketless for the series despite bowling with accuracy for the most part.It was not until Holder brought offspinner Roston Chase on in the last over before lunch that West Indies made a breakthrough with Chase trapping Burns lbw with a ball that beat the inside edge and rapped him on the pads bang in line with middle stump. That signalled lunch but Chase struck with the next ball after lunch with one that spun a little as Crawley flicked low to Holder at leg slip. Crawley, whose second-innings 76 in Southampton cemented his place at the expense of Kent team-mate Joe Denly who made way for Root’s return from parental leave, was out for a first-ball duck.Root survived the hat-trick ball as he and Sibley built a 52-run partnership. But when Gabriel left the field Holder turned back to Joseph, who had accounted for three of Root’s previous four dismissals against West Indies going into the match. Joseph made it four in the last five with a full, outswinging delivery which Root swiped to Holder at slip. That left Sibley and Stokes in the middle and the pair set to work, Sibley keeping it low-key while Stokes produced the odd flash of strokeplay when it was warranted, including the first six of the series when he smacked Chase back down the ground.Sibley’s circumspection was familiar. After a duck in the first innings at the Ageas Bowl, he faced 164 deliveries in the second innings there before he was out moments after bringing up his fifty. This time, he stuck around upon reaching the milestone, grinding out his score off 253 deliveries so far.He was dropped on 68 when, in Gabriel’s first over since returning to the field, he sent a thick outside edge straight to Holder at second slip, only for the ball to slide through Holder’s hands, hit him in the stomach and fall to the ground.Roach was imploring when he reviewed a not-out decision for lbw which would have dismissed Sibley for 82 but, with the ball striking high on the front pad, the batsman survived on the umpire’s original call.Either Stokes, Sibley or both have been involved in each of the five highest partnerships of the series so far, all of them yielding in excess of 50 runs. Their union on Thursday took their team past England’s first-innings total at the Ageas Bowl of 204, which proved too low and was a factor in the hosts’ defeat there. If they are able to push on into the second day in Manchester, it will put less pressure on the England bowling attack, which has had an overhaul in the absence of Archer and the resting Mark Wood and James Anderson.Stuart Broad returned after being left out of the first Test and was joined by Chris Woakes and Sam Curran, with Stokes taking up the fourth seamer’s position. Their fresh legs could be key as England seek to thwart West Indies’ quest for a first Test series win in England for 32 years. But, after their batting performance in Southampton fell short, England will be happy to delay the appearance of their bowlers, regardless of who they are, a little longer.

"United are informed" – Romano shares what Man Utd know about Michael Olise

Manchester United "really appreciate" Michael Olise, with Fabrizio Romano sharing details of the club's information on the playmaker ahead of the summer transfer window.

Man United eyeing Premier League signings

The Red Devils have been linked with signing players from all across Europe in recent months, but it looks as though they are targeting a number of Premier League stars.

Crystal Palace winger Olise is of course a strong rumoured target for United, having recently scored an impressive brace for the Eagles in their 4-0 win over Erik ten Hag's side at Selhurst Park. He is considered an upgrade on Antony, who is up for sale.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise.

Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite is another player who has stood out as an exciting option for United, during a tough season for the Blues that has seen him stand out as one of their most impressive individuals. The Englishman has averaged 4.4 clearances per game in the league, and at 21 years of age, is a defender with a huge amount of potential. Manchester City are also believed to be keen, though, which is concern.

United have been linked with Fulham central defender Tosin Adarabioyo, too, with the Englishman set to be available on a free transfer at the end of the season.

Man Utd's information on Olise

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Romano said that Manchester United want to sign Olise this summer, and they even know the necessary conditions for a possible deal.

"Man Utd want to be there, so United are informed on the release clause and informed on the conditions of the deal. So let’s see when they will attack the situation again. The situation will be important to understand what is going to be the plan, because obviously you have to involve the manager if you want to make a proper plan.

"But at the same time Olise remains a player who is really appreciated at Manchester United, also by people on the scouting team since one year ago."

Olise could be exactly what United are looking for this summer, with the Frenchman proving to be such a consistent supplier of end product, as well as being a hugely exciting player to watch. The 22-year-old possesses similar attributes to Antony, in terms of generally being a right-sided player who likes to cut inside onto his dangerous left foot. Unlike the current Red Devils man, however, he backs up looking dangerous by scoring and assisting on a consistent basis.

Ange must now ditch 5/10 Spurs dud who lost 100% duels vs Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur rounded off their 2023/24 campaign with a 1-1 draw against fellow Premier League side Newcastle United on Tuesday, the two sides taking part in what seemed a frankly futile affair in Melbourne.

Just days after the end of another gruelling league season, the teams jetted off for a post-season clash at the MCG, with Euro 2024 hopeful James Maddison opening the scoring following a delightful, weaving run, before Alexander Isak pulled his side level after tapping home on the stroke of half-time.

Following a second period that unsurprisingly saw a raft of changes and a wave of youthful substitutions, the game was then ultimately decided via a penalty shootout, with forgotten man Bryan Gil missing what proved to be the decisive spot-kick.

While not much can, or should, be taken from what was effectively a friendly, that outing could well mark the end of a torrid time in English football for Gil, with that meek display arguably summing up the Spaniard's spell with the Lilywhites thus far.

Bryan Gil's game in numbers vs Newcastle

Having replaced skipper Heung-min Son on the hour mark, Gil would no doubt have been keen to make an impression on what was a rare outing in Spurs colours, having been restricted to just 12 appearances in all competitions in the regular season.

A mere unused substitute in the final four top-flight games of the campaign, it is fair to say that the one-time Valencia man hasn't been able to work his way into Ange Postecoglou's plans, with Tuesday's clash perhaps emphasising why.

Tottenham winger Bryan Gil

In his 30 minutes of action, the 23-year-old did make 35 touches and enjoy a pass accuracy rate of 97%, although he also squandered possession on four occasions and failed to win a single duel as a marker of his lightweight nature.

As football.london's Alasdair Gold – who awarded Gil a 5/10 match rating – noted after the game, it was a 'busy cameo' in what could well be the winger's 'last display in a Spurs shirt", yet ultimately it was he who proved the only man unable to net from the spot.

29 minutes

35 touches

97% pass accuracy

With a heap of young talent now at Postecoglou's disposal in the attacking ranks – with a certain Mikey Moore catching the eye on international duty after scoring twice for England's U17s – it is hard to see the wisdom in keeping Gil around for much longer.

Bryan Gil's future at Spurs

Signed from Sevilla back in the summer of 2021, the four-cap Spain international has since made just 43 appearances for the club in all competitions, providing only two assists and failing to score in that time.

For any attacking talent, let alone a £22m addition, that is a rather measly record, with returns to his homeland on loan at both Valencia and Sevilla having failed to inspire any change in fortune.

Bryan Gil in action for Tottenham.

Of course, injury has played a part in the wideman's north London woes, but when he has featured the left-footer has rarely looked of the required standard – notably dud a "boy playing in a man’s game" by Jamie Carragher after facing Manchester City earlier in the campaign.

With Fabrizio Romano suggesting that there is now interest in his services, it would be no surprise if Gil is one of many whose time is up at N17, with it set to be rather poetic that this failed signing's last act was perhaps missing a penalty.
