Wow: Man City will now listen to offers for "incredible" £300k-a-week star

Manchester City will reportedly listen to offers for an "incredible" player who Pep Guardiola has publicly hailed once the summer transfer window arrives.

Man City ins and outs this summer

The reigning Premier League champions are expected to make changes to their squad in the summer, in order to retain a freshness and keep players on their toes.

Lokomotiv Moscow youngster Sergey Pinyaev has been linked with a switch to City, with the 19-year-old seen as a long-term acquisition with a high ceiling. He has seven goal contributions (three goals and four assists) in 17 Russian Premier League starts this season, primarily playing as a right-sided attacking player, but also capable of thriving on the opposite flank.

Another target who starred over the weekend is Crystal Palace star Michael Olise, having been regularly tipped to head to City in the summer, with rivals Liverpool and Manchester United also showing an interest.

Crystal Palace star Michael Olise

Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen wing-back Jeremie Frimpong is being looked at as a potential replacement for Kyle Walker, who is now 33 years of age. The Bundesliga ace has been a key man for his side en route to them winning the title under Xabi Alonso, chipping in with eight goals and seven assists in the competition.

On the flip side, there are some huge names who could potentially leave City this summer, with Bernardo Silva arguably looking the most likely to move on to pastures new. A move to Barcelona has been mooted a number of times, with the Portuguese reportedly favouring a move to the Camp Nou instead of staying at the Etihad.

Man City open to selling "incredible" player

According to Football Insider, Manchester City could now choose to sell Jack Grealish this summer, with a "shock sale a growing possibility" once the current campaign comes to an end.

The report says that "Guardiola is not completely convinced by the winger and he is considered dispensable despite starting the majority of the team’s big games this season", suggesting that the manager has lost faith in the £300,000-a-week ace despite previously singing his praises.

bryan-gil-jack-grealish-tottenham-opinion

This is an intriguing update, with opinion likely to be split when it comes to Grealish's worth as a City player moving forward. To some, he is a key cog in the machine, keeping possession, linking with teammates and winning free-kicks, but his detractors criticise his lack of end product, with only 14 goals scored in 122 appearances for the club.

Guardiola has called the 28-year-old "incredible" in the past, so he has clearly valued him along the way, and he played his part in City's incredible treble success last season. There is an argument to say that the England international could be improved upon, however, with Bayern Munich star Jamal Musiala linked with a stunning move to the Etihad this summer, and surely representing an upgrade, not to mention being seven years younger.

It could be quite the battle for his signature this summer between the two sides.

Grealish is contracted to City until 2027, so there is certainly no rush to sell him, but if a huge offer comes in, there is sense in at least considering accepting it.

Ratcliffe keen: Man Utd’s interest in “monster” is “increasingly insistent”

Manchester United's interest in signing a defensive "monster" in the summer transfer window is becoming "increasingly insistent", according to journalist Rudy Galetti.

Busy summer ahead of Man Utd

The Sir Jim Ratcliffe era has got off to a promising start at Old Trafford, with United's new part-owner making big changes behind the scenes. The hope is that the Red Devils will embark on one of their best transfer windows in years this summer, helped by the likely appointment of Dan Ashworth.

There are various areas of the pitch that need to be improved upon, and one of those is centre-back, with the likes of Raphael Varane, Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans not representing the future. For that reason, Nottingham Forest ace Murillo has been linked with a move to Old Trafford, having enjoyed an impressive season at the City Ground. He has started 27 games in the Premier League, averaging 5.7 clearances per match.

In an attacking sense, Crystal Palace winger Michael Olise is reportedly wanted by United, being seen as a noticeable upgrade on Antony, who has continually not offered enough product during his time at the club, scoring just twice all season in all competitions.

Rasmus Hojlund may be a hugely promising young striker, but more competition for him could be needed moving forward, and Sporting CP ace Viktor Gyokeres is seen as an option. The Swede is enjoying a fantastic season, scoring 22 times in 28 appearances in the Primeira Liga.

Man Utd want to sign defensive "monster"

Taking to X, Galetti claimed that United are in the mix to sign Juventus defender Gleison Bremer this summer, with a replacement already being looked at by his current club:

"Hermoso will leave Atleti in June as a free agent, no doubt. Juventus are monitoring him as a possible replacement of Bremer, on whom the #ManUTD's interest is becoming increasingly insistent. Inter, Aston Villa and other English clubs have Mario on the CB's list."

Juventus' Gleison Bremer

Bremer is exactly the kind of player who United could do with next season, coming in as a dominant figure who is both experienced and young enough to be a key figure for four or five years at Old Trafford. The 27-year-old has shone at the heart of Juve's defence this term, winning 2.9 aerial duels per game across 32 Serie A appearances, not to mention 4.2 clearances per match.

He could be viewed as a great partner for Lisandro Martinez moving forward, with the Argentine the only current United centre-back who genuinely feels like a key part of the club's future. Analyst Ben Mattinson has described the Juve man as a "monster" due to his expertise at the back, and he could see the Red Devils as an enticing proposition.

Could it be third time lucky for the Dutch manager?

ByBen Browning Apr 20, 2024

Perhaps the biggest negative could be the fact that United look like they won't be playing Champions League football next season, but they remain a huge club that can offer big wages and the prospect of a successful future.

'80 points' – Man City told what they can expect if found guilty of 115 financial charges as Premier League executive provides update

Manchester City are facing 115 financial charges and a Premier League executive has now revealed what the club can expect if found guilty.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Eight-time Premier League champions Manchester City have been charged with possibly breaking the League's financial rules on multiple instances with some of the irregularities stretching back over 15 years. The 115 financial charges against City will be investigated by an independent disciplinary tribunal starting next month, and a decision is anticipated early in 2025.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

According to reports, City may be punished with fines, relegation, or even a reduction in points should they be found guilty. However, an unnamed Premier League executive has now told The Athletic exactly what penalties Pep Guardiola's side could face. The executive reportedly told them that City could very well receive a "substantial points deduction" in the region of "70-80 points" and that would see the eight-time Premier League champions all but certainly relegated to the Championship.

    DID YOU KNOW?

Man City have already claimed innocence concerning the charges and will likely challenge any sort of potential point deduction in the future with the Court of Sports Arbitration (CAS) similar to what they had done in 2021 when they were handed a two-year ban from European competitions by UEFA. CAS eventually scrapped the ban and instead handed the Cityzens fines for non-compliance.

With the investigations set to begin in September, City will soon have to begin working with the independent disciplinary tribunal off the field. Meanwhile, Guardiola and Co will focus on the on-field matters as they begin their hunt for their fifth-straight Premier League title.

Chelsea can forget about Toney by signing £42m "machine"

It's been another disappointing season of Premier League football for Chelsea this year, as Mauricio Pochettino has been unable to turn his promising young squad into a cohesive unit.

The Blues have looked out at sea for much of the season, although their expected goal numbers suggest that they should have another seven goals in the bag, indicating that with a clinical forward, they could well climb the table next year.

One striker who has recently been touted for a move to Stamford Bridge is Ivan Toney, but based on even more recent reports, Todd Boehly and Co could be eyeing a younger and more exciting alternative.

Chelsea interest in £42m marksman

According to a recent report from 90min, Chelsea are among several Premier League clubs who have maintained their interest in RB Leipzig's promising young striker, Benjamin Šeško.

Benjamin Sesko

The report has revealed that, alongside the Blues, Manchester United and Arsenal are also keen on bringing the Slovenia international to England in the summer. At the same time, Paris Saint-Germain are also very interested in bringing him to France.

While the number of competing clubs is far from ideal for the West Londoners, the price it would take to secure the forward's signature certainly is, with his release clause being set at just €50m – £42m – and the report has revealed that Leipzig may be willing to accept less if the final price is close enough.

The report has stated that Chelsea currently view the 20-year-old as a cheaper alternative to Victor Osimhen, and while that's true, he'd also be a brilliant alternative to Toney.

How Benjamin Šeško compares to Ivan Toney

Now, his age is the first and arguably most important reason why Chelsea should look at signing Šeško over Toney.

By this point, it's crystal clear that Boehly and Co want to create a team full of promising young talents who can grow and develop together over the coming years.

So, adding a 28-year-old striker into the mix over a 20-year-old seems counterproductive, especially when, on average, centre-forwards tend to peak at around 27 and then steadily decline, per The Athletic.

Aside from the squad-building aspect, there is also a strong case that the former RB Salzburg goal-scoring "machine", as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, is just the better player of the pair.

With Toney missing a significant portion of the season due to his betting-related ban, it would be unfair to compare the pair's actual output this year. However, as their underlying numbers are calculated per 90, they can be compared for this season, and unfortunately for the Englishman, while he comes out on top in some metrics, he's a distant second in many others.

For example, according to FBref, the "outstanding" Slovenian, as Kulig described him, produces a higher non-penalty goal and assists figure, takes more shots on target, scores from more of those shots, has better passing accuracy, produces more goal-creating actions, and is more successful in taking on defenders, all per 90.

In defence of the Brentford star, he does win more aerial duels and produce more shot-creating actions, but aside from that, it's a fairly one-sided comparison.

Ultimately, if Chelsea want to add a new and seriously talented striker to their team, who won't cost an arm and a leg and should only get better over the next few years, they should sign Šeško and forget all about Toney.

Tom Curran hopes strong IPL showing can boost T20 World Cup case

Seamer thinks successful tournament with Rajasthan Royals can push him forward in England queue

Andrew Miller27-Feb-2020Deception and subterfuge are key parts of the armoury of a T20 death bowler, but for Tom Curran, Rajasthan Royals’ latest English recruit, those traits may have to be deployed in the nets at Jaipur too. That’s because, with the T20 World Cup looming large on the horizon, a number of his IPL colleagues – not least the team’s Australian head coach, Andrew McDonald – are likely to be grateful for an insight into his mindset come October.Curran’s growing reputation in the crunch moments came to the fore in England’s recent T20I win in South Africa, where he held his nerve with the series on the line to seal a two-run win in the second match at Durban.ALSO READ: Five series takeaways for England’s T20 World Cup preparationsHaving started the final over of that game with a healthy 15 runs to defend, Curran and England were pushed to the brink of a series defeat when Dwaine Pretorius connected with a six and a four from consecutive balls to take the requirement down to five from three. But from that point on, Curran found the resolve to seal the contest, producing a pair of fine yorkers followed by a perfectly executed back-of-the-hand slower ball, that the new man on strike, Bjorn Fortuin, could only flick over his shoulder to short fine leg.”That’s cricket, it can go the other way very quickly,” said Curran during a Rajasthan Royals event in London. “But that game was really big for me. At the start of the over I should have been defending it anyway but, with three balls to go, they were on top. So looking back on it, I was really proud of that. The fact that, in that moment, I had no choice but to execute and I managed to do so.”As Curran recalled, there had been a meeting of England’s brains trust before that final delivery, with the captain and vice-captain, Eoin Morgan and Jos Buttler, in on the discussions, along with the experienced Chris Jordan. But ultimately, as soon as Curran was clear in his own mind what needed to be done, that was the end of the matter.”I was weighing up the options,” he said. “I’d just bowled two good yorkers, so if he tries to stand there and whack it, if it’s on the money then a yorker is still a good option. But I just thought a slower ball, he actually has to hit it for four, whereas a yorker you can still nick it for four.”I just went with my gut really, and when I said that to Morgs and Jos, everyone was like ‘cool, let’s go with it’. Luckily it came off.”Tom Curran poses in his Rajasthan Royals colours•Getty ImagesNo doubt his new employers were watching that performance closely. For, with Jofra Archer, Rajasthan Royals’ go-to at the death, set to miss at least the first half of the tournament as he recovers from an elbow fracture, Curran knows that the coming tournament offers him a massive opportunity to cement a role, and his reputation, ahead of the World Cup.”It’s an unbelievable standard at the IPL, so it’s a great experience for me,” he said. “These are sold-out games and it’s proper loud. So it’s mirroring as close to the biggest games on the international circuit, what they’ll be like. It will be a great experience. If guys go there and do well, they’ll take a lot of confidence from that. That’s what it’s all about.”Curran has had one previous taste of IPL action when, in April 2018, he was called up by Kolkata Knight Riders as a late replacement for Mitchell Starc, and performed creditably with six wickets at an economy rate of 11.60 in five matches. This time, however, he was picked up by Rajasthan for his base price of INR 1 crore (approx. £110,000), where his profile will doubtless be raised by the presence of two of the most influential members of England’s white-ball squads, Buttler and Ben Stokes.”I’m really looking forward to it,” he said. “I’ve already played a lot of cricket now with the guys there, so it makes it that much easier. Especially being somewhere like India, where it’s a busy hectic schedule, to have those familiar faces there will be nice.”Not all the familiar faces will be on the Curran’s side come October, however. Rajasthan’s squad contains two overseas stars in particular – Australia’s Steve Smith and South Africa’s David Miller – who may find themselves at the other end of the pitch come the World Cup. And when it comes to sharing knowledge during the IPL, weaknesses as well as strengths, Curran conceded he’d have to be cautious about being too open.ALSO READ: ‘Test cricket is the best form of the game’ – Jos Buttler”I don’t think you chat weaknesses with loads of people anyway,” he said. “There’s a few people who you might trust, and you might ask, ‘what does Steve Smith do in this situation?’ but it’s more about developing and getting better, which we players focus more on.”If I’m bowling in the nets to some of the Indian guys, I’m not going to be showing them all the tricks. But that’s a huge benefit of having Jos, Stokesy and these guys. I think you actually learn a lot too. Speaking to Jos I’ll learn about batting. You just need to have some of the players on the international stage to talk to, and try things with.”However, Buttler, who was also present at the event, added that there was some merit in sharing a bit more of your repertoire with future rivals, because too much knowledge can be used against your opponent in the heat of battle.”It evolves, as well,” said Buttler. “TC will show someone his slower ball – you can use it both ways. It can be a bluff as well. He might say: ‘Yeah, I always bowl this slower ball.’ But there will be times when TC says at the end of his mark, ‘Yeah I said to Smith in the nets that I bowl this ball, so let’s bowl something else.’ That might become part of your [repertoire].”It definitely does happen,” Curran added. “You’ll be aware of it. If you have it in the back of your mind that I’ll throw in the odd curveball in there.”As for McDonald, Rajasthan’s highly-rated new head coach, Curran insisted that his dual status as Australia’s assistant coach would have little bearing on their relationship, even though the Aussies are set to go into their home World Cup as favourites after winning nine of their last ten completed T20Is.”It seems to be the way things are going now,” he said of McDonald’s roles. “I don’t think it will make too much of a difference. It will be great to work with him there and he’ll be fully involved once he gets to India.”I haven’t worked with him full-time but I have bumped into him,” he added. “Nowadays you tend to bump into people and have conversations, so it will be a really good experience.”You’re always going to have coaches, but it’s about filtering information. There are things that people say… some people you’re going to listen to, and you almost build up that relationship over time from working with someone.”If a [new] coach comes and gives you some information, you take it with a pinch of salt. You don’t want to be making massive technical changes mid-tournament, but it’s different for everyone.”

Newcastle now targeting "incredible" Champions League winner for Howe

After a difficult season, Newcastle United have already reportedly turned their attention towards the summer transfer window, which could see Eddie Howe welcome a Champions League-winning midfielder.

Newcastle transfer news

There's no doubt that it needs to be a busy summer at St James' Park if Newcastle are to get back in the Champions League by finishing inside the Premier League's top four next season. Howe and PIF learned the hard way this time around about how important squad depth is and the consequences a side can suffer without it.

Newcastle could now turn to "great" Chelsea target to replace Dan Burn

The left-back has struggled at times this season…

Keen to avoid a repeat, the Magpies have already been linked with centre-back cover in the form of Max Kilman and Dean Huijsen, who would immediately come into the squad in the place of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, who are both set to miss part of next season through ACL injuries. Given that Howe's only recognised centre-back is now Fabian Schar, reinforcements at the back are a must.

Max Kilman celebrates

Meanwhile, issues in the middle of the park still need addressing with the Magpies in need of upgrades and depth, which has seen them turn their attention towards Brighton & Hove Albion.

According to TeamTalk, Newcastle are targeting a move to sign Billy Gilmour from Brighton this summer in a deal that would see Roberto De Zerbi lose one of his more favoured players. Gilmour, despite still being just 22-years-old, already has plenty of experience at the very top, having been part of Chelsea's Champions League-winning squad in the 2020/21 campaign.

Completing a move to Brighton in the summer of 2022 for £11m, Gilmour has rediscovered his best form in Sussex and could now be on the move again. It remains to be seen just how much the Seagulls will demand for their midfielder, however, especially given their recent history of expensive departures.

"Incedible" Gilmour can partner Guimaraes

Getting the best out of Bruno Guimaraes will be vital to any aspirations that Newcastle have to reach European football once more. And Gilmour would certainly help do that over the likes of Sean Longstaff.

De Zerbi will be reluctant to see his midfielder leave this summer though, having sung his praises at the start of this season: “Gilmour is a very smart player. He has an incredible attitude, incredible behaviour. He plays like an older player but he’s a young player. He’s improving a lot and he’s a completely different player to when I came to Brighton."

When the summer transfer window arrives, Gilmour looks like one to watch, especially since he shares an agent with Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope, which should help the Magpies to gain a small margin in negotiations. A Champions League winner and still only 22, Gilmour ticks plenty of boxes for Howe and Newcastle. Now, it's just about presenting a convincing enough offer to those at The Amex this summer.

£22 million player asks to leave Tottenham as club make out-of-window offer

A £22 million player has now asked to leave Tottenham this summer, and it is believed that one club have already made an out-of-window offer for him.

Postecoglou rebuild needed as Spurs face crucial summer

After a phenomenal start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, manager Ange Postecoglou and co have crashed right back down to earth in the last month.

Ange and Levy hold internal Spurs talks as £13m Werner alternative emerges

The Tottenham chiefs are holding meetings over this summer window.

ByEmilio Galantini May 3, 2024

Reminded of the frailties which still very much exist in Spurs' eleven, their last three consecutive Premier League defeats to Newcastle United, Arsenal and Chelsea highlight that Postecoglou's got a lot of work to do ahead of 2024/2025.

"They didn't win individual battles, didn't win enough second balls, they were so passive, especially in the first half in a derby game where you have to win those battles, play forward and look to pass with a bit of urgency. They didn't do all the basics," said pundit Jamie Redknapp on Tottenham's defeat to Chelsea.

Tottenham's last five league games under Postecoglou

Chelsea 2-0 Tottenham

Tottenham 2-3 Arsenal

Newcastle United 4-0 Tottenham

Tottenham 3-1 Nottingham Forest

West Ham 1-1 Tottenham

"When Ange took over, I was watching the football thinking, 'this is almost revolutionary'. You've got two men coming into midfield, the two full-backs looking fantastic, people playing at such a high level. But they've fallen off a cliff now. They've won two out of their last seven since they beat Aston Villa away in one of the best performances I've seen this season.

"The other thing, they've only played 37 games this year. They lost in the Carabao Cup in the second round and lost in the fourth round of the FA Cup to Manchester City. There's no fatigue involved. I look at the manager and he looks beaten."

With Champions League football looking like an ever-so-distant prospect as Aston Villa take full control of the race for fourth, the next summer transfer window will be crucial. Tottenham want to sign a new centre-back for Postecoglou, alongside a new striker and number six (Matt Law), and a few players could also go the other way.

Young forward Bryan Gil, who doesn't feature in Postecoglou's plans going by his lack of game time, is one man nominated for the axe. Feyenoord have been displaying serious interest in Gil, but the Eredivisie side are by no means alone.

Gil asks to leave Tottenham as Sevilla make proposal

According to Vamos Mi Sevilla FC, via Sport Witness, Gil has "requested" to leave Tottenham permanently, and Sevilla have made a proposal for the Spaniard.

richarlison-bryan-gil-tottenham-opinion

While the La Liga side can't afford to take him on an outright permanent deal, the offer they've made is one of a loan with the obligation to make it permanent next year.

Signed by Fabio Paratici for around £22 million from Sevilla in a part-exchange deal including Erik Lamela, it remains to be seen if the "very, very exciting" player can seal a move back to his former club.

Saka’s place among Arsenal’s youngest players to reach 100 league wins is also noteworthy. He ranks third, behind Arsenal legends Fàbregas and Cliff Bastin. Bastin, who set the record back in September 1934, achieved his 100th win at the age of 22 years and 171 days, making him the youngest in Arsenal’s history to do so.

While both Fabregas and Bastin marked their 100th victories by scoring in their respective matches, Saka did not find the back of the net against Aston Villa. However, his impact on the game was undeniable. He played a crucial role in both of Arsenal’s goals, delivering a cross that eventually led to Leandro Trossard’s finish and later providing the assist for Thomas Partey’s goal that sealed the win.

Despite reaching 100 Premier League wins at a young age, Saka's journey to this milestone was not the quickest. His 100th victory came in his 172nd appearance, a number that pales in comparison to the record held by Phil Foden. The Manchester City star reached 100 wins in just 127 appearances, a feat that highlights the dominance of City during his time at the club. Following Foden in the record books are Bernardo Silva (129 appearances), Oleksandr Zinchenko, and Ederson (both achieving 100 wins in 130 appearances).
