Despedida no Fla-Flu?

Jack Grealish in danger of missing out on England spot at Euro 2024 as Gareth Southgate issues update on Man City star

Jack Grealish might not be heading to Euro 2024 with the Three Lions as Gareth Southgate issued a worrying update on the Manchester City star.

Grealish struggled for form with Man CityWas on the bench in the FA Cup finalSouthgate coyed on his potential inclusionWHAT HAPPENED?

Grealish, who curtailed his holidays to join the England squad early, has faced a challenging season with Manchester City. His struggles were evident as he remained a benchwarmer in the FA Cup final and could start in only one of the last seven Premier League games. This lack of consistent playtime has put his position in the England squad under scrutiny.

AdvertisementGettyWHAT SOUTHGATE SAID

Speaking to reporters, Southgate said: "We think we know who the best have been across the season, but what we don’t totally know is how many we need to take or how many we can allow ourselves to take because of the cover we might need in other positions as well.

"It’s obvious this season he [Grealish] has not played as much as last season. I’m sure he would have liked that to be different but we know the qualities he can bring and the qualities he has. He is a player we enjoy working with and a character we enjoy having within the group. We know where we’re likely to be. It’s hard to be quite so specific because we keep sitting down and saying: ‘Okay, if it’s this or this’. Then somebody else in the room says, ‘What if we lose that player?’”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Southgate will be missing several key players against Bosnia and Herzegovina at St James’ Park as Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Harry Kane, Anthony Gordon, and Bukayo Saka are unavailable due to injuries. Whereas, John Stones will miss out as he joined the squad late following the FA Cup final.

When questioned about Maguire's availability for the Euro 2024 opener against Serbia on June 16 in Gelsenkirchen, Southgate’s response was cautious: “We don’t know that at the moment”.

DID YOU KNOW?

Southgate's approach to injury assessments is pragmatic and rooted in experience. He candidly expressed his scepticism about players’ self-reports on their fitness and assured that his final decision will be driven by medical reports and will rely minimally on the player's account.

“They’re lying buggers really!” he said. “If you’re in a relegation battle, the treatment room is absolutely full. If you’re in a cup final it’s empty. I’ve learned that, from being here [at Middlesbrough], and playing cup finals as well. They have great intentions and are super positive, but equally, they want to be on the plane, so have got to have a more in-depth view than that. I’ll consult the players as little as possible”.

Rahul, Dhoni tons, Kuldeep's return to form headline India's win

The result of a warm-up match might not matter hugely, but India, who beat Bangladesh by 95 runs in what was the final preparatory fixture for either side, came away with more answers than questions – quite ideal a couple of days before the start of the World Cup. KL Rahul first scored a classy century to all but firm up the No. 4 slot for himself, and Kuldeep Yadav, out of form and under pressure, then put up a heartening performance with the ball, claiming 3 for 47.For the record, in a 14 v 14 encounter – Bangladesh left out Tamim Iqbal and India Kedar Jadhav, though the latter did come out to field briefly – India batted first and put up 359 for 7, Rahul’s 99-ball 108 from No. 4 and MS Dhoni’s thoroughly dominant 78-ball 113 the highlights of their innings. Bangladesh looked on course when Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim were batting together, but with Kuldeep and Yuzvendra Chahal getting among the wickets, they ended on 264, with three balls left in the innings.Who will win the World Cup? Play Cricket Picks and win bigIt was a strange sort of batting effort from the Indians, easily broken up into a few segments.Shikhar Dhawan fell in the third over, and Rohit Sharma in the 14th, and by the end of the 15th over, India had only reached 58. Virat Kohli had stepped in and settled down by then, and while Dhawan and Rohit scored at 11.11 and 45.23 respectively, Kohli quickly passed the run-a-ball mark.It wasn’t easy going for him, though. Mustafizur Rahman, who bowled beautifully, hitting the perfect length and getting the ball to move in the air and off the pitch, got Kohli to nick one between the wicketkeeper and a very wide slip, and Rubel Hossain also caught the India captain’s edge once. But Kohli was in good touch outside of those blips, and looked set for at least a half-century when Mohammad Saifuddin had his number. Saifuddin bowls usually in the 125kph range, and it really was a case of Kohli giving the bowler the charge and yorking himself in the process than any expertise on Saifuddin’s part, though his celebrations belied that, while also making for some fun viewing. But from 102 for 4 after 22 overs, when Rubel had Vijay Shankar caught behind, it was all India. Slow till that point, India rode on Rahul’s class and Dhoni’s belligerence to move to 150 by 30 overs, then 199 after 35, and 243 by 40. Rahul played the pulls and cuts especially well, while Dhoni smashed it around, particularly against the spinners, with disdain.Rahul’s century coupled with Vijay’s failure, might have effectively finished off the No. 4 debate for India, but maybe the Indians missed a trick by not giving the likes of Hardik Pandya and Dinesh Karthik some batting time once Rahul and Dhoni had had their fun. Oh, Dhoni certainly had fun, targeting the shorter boundaries and sending the ball over the ropes seven times, including the one he hit to bring up his century. After the abject performance with the bat against New Zealand, where they rolled over for 179 in 39.2 overs before going down by six wickets, this was a heartening performance from the Indian point of view. The performance of the star opening pair, however, remains a cause for concern.MS Dhoni goes for a big shot•AFP

It wasn’t a bad start for Bangladesh as they chased a big target, but Jasprit Bumrah pegged them back with a double-strike, sending back Soumya Sarkar and Shakib Al Hasan with consecutive balls. Liton and Mushfiqur, however, took control of the chase – the Indians did not bring back their frontline pacers at any stage – with a 120-run stand. They kept the required rate within reach and settled in nicely, till another two-in-two brought India back into the contest. This time, it was Chahal, who had Liton stumped and Mohammad Mithun lbw with a wrong’un to leave Bangladesh at 169 for 4 in the 32nd over. But Mushfiqur, perhaps Bangladesh’s most dependable batsman in the last couple of years – an average of 50.88 as against a career average of 34.95 – was still out there, and was playing a little gem. After settling down in Liton’s company, Mushfiqur turned it on with a series of drives – off back foot and front – and some cracking slog-sweeps, a shot he has mastered. Then Kuldeep led a turnaround. He was out of sorts during the IPL and then out of the Kolkata Knight Riders team, broken and battered, but after a wicketless warm-up against New Zealand, he finally struck when he beat Mahmudullah’s hoick to hit timber. His expression changed, his body language improved, and he suddenly seemed to rediscover his flight and loop, and was getting both the legbreak and the wrong’un going. How much that meant to the team was also evident in the celebrations. The third two-in-two of the innings came courtesy Kuldeep too, when he bowled Mushfiqur for a well-made 94-ball 90 and, off the next ball, had Mosaddek Hossain stumped with one that went the other way. From there to the end was only a matter of time. It’s serious stuff now. Bangladesh’s World Cup campaign starts first, on June 2, against South Africa at The Oval, and India then play South Africa in their first game on June 5, in Southampton.

Durham pair score fifties to put hosts in solid spot against Derbyshire

Jack Burnham, Alex Lees produce patient knocks to defy pressure from Ravi Rampaul

Alex Lees and Jack Burnham scored half-centuries to lead a solid effort with the bat for Durham on day one of their Specsavers County Championship Division Two clash against Derbyshire at Emirates Riverside. The home side were put under pressure by fine bowling from Ravi Rampaul, who claimed figures of 4 for 56 for Derbyshire, producing impressive spells with the new ball in hand. However, Lees and Burnham played the patient knocks that were demanded by head coach James Franklin in the aftermath of the club’s defeat to Gloucestershire last time out. Although neither batsmen was able to make three figures, Durham ended the first day in a decent position at 254 for 8.Durham were inserted after Derbyshire captain Billy Godleman opted for an uncontested toss. Michael Jones became the fourth player to open alongside Lees for the home side in the Championship this season. However, Jones lasted just four overs when he edged a Rampaul delivery behind to Harvey Hosein for a duck.Cameron Bancroft and Lees attempted to see off the new ball. The two players were disciplined in their efforts, but Rampaul was able to remove Bancroft off the penultimate ball of his eighth over, trapping the Durham skipper lbw for 18. Lees survived a run out attempt when he was stranded in the middle of the wicket as Tom Lace missed the stumps. He made the most of his opportunity, putting on a partnership of 57 with Gareth Harte for the third wicket. They took Durham into the lunch break, but their stand was broken when Harte missed a straight one from Tony Palladino to fall lbw for 24.Lees kept the home side on course, reaching his half-century from 102 deliveries. He built another solid partnership with Burnham, but then the opener played a loose drive and was caught a second slip from a Luis Reece delivery for 63.Burnham took centre stage, building on the work of his team-mate. He picked his moments to push for boundaries, forming another impressive stand for the hosts with Liam Trevaskis. The duo were able to reach their stand of fifty and push Durham beyond the 200-run mark, earning the first batting point of the contest.Burnham reached his second Championship fifty of the season from 129 balls, including three fours and a six over mid-wicket. Trevaskis seemed on course to join his team-mate, only to lose his wicket for 40 playing a poor stroke to a short ball from the leg-spin of Matt Critchley. The timing of the wicket could not have been worse for the home side as Rampaul returned with the new ball. The paceman did the damage once again, causing a collapse in the Durham ranks. He removed Burnham for a fine innings of 67 lbw, and he produced a perfect ball to remove Ben Raine for a golden duck.Brydon Carse survived the hat-trick ball from the West Indian and added 10 runs to take his team past the 250 and a second batting point. Ned Eckersley and Matty Potts remained unbeaten at the close, leaving the hosts in a solid position heading into day two.

Cristiano Ronaldo backed to 'take Portugal a long way' at Euro 2024 despite playing at 'different level' with Al-Nassr – but CR7 also sent surprise Bruno Fernandes Golden Boot warning

Harry Redknapp believes that Cristiano Ronaldo can take Portugal a "long way" at Euro 2024, despite now playing at a "different level" with Al-Nassr.

  • Believes that Portugal are real contenders
  • But thinks Fernandes could beat CR7 to Golden Boot

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Portugal's dependency on Ronaldo's goals has eased over the last few years, with the five-time Ballon d'Or winner even benched for the majority of the 2022 World Cup in Qatar by then-boss Fernando Santos. After the tournament, Santos was shown the door and under Roberto Martinez, the Al-Nassr forward has seen more action for his country while leading by example as captain. Ex-Tottenham manager Redknapp believes that Ronaldo can help Portugal make a strong run in Germany, but has also warned that Bruno Fernandes might beat him to the Golden Boot.

  • WHAT REDKNAPP SAID

Speaking to BetVictor, Redknapp said: “The team that interests me is Portugal. I think they've got a lot of good players. You look at their squad and there's some real quality there so they’re definitely one to keep an eye on for me. Apart from England, they'd be my next pick.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is obviously now playing at a slightly different level to before, out in Saudi Arabia, but he’s an amazing athlete and he’s still as fit as a fiddle because he looks after himself so well. I can see him scoring goals at the tournament and I can see him taking Portugal a long way this year.

“I also think Bruno Fernandes could be fantastic value for the Golden Boot award – he will score goals. He won't take penalties because I suppose Ronaldo will grab the ball, but I’d definitely have an interest in him at a big price for the Golden Boot.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Going into the tournament, Portugal are not considered favourites, however, a run into the knockout stages could see the tables change with the unpredictability of single-legged fixtures, as was the case at Euro 2016, when Portugal won the tournament despite being in underwhelming form.

    WHAT NEXT FOR RONALDO?

Portugal's all-time top-scorer has been in very good form over the course of the season with Al-Nassr, breaking the record for the most goals in a single Saudi Pro League season. Fernandes was similarly influential at Manchester United, and the duo will hope that they can conjure up some magic in Germany and win the tournament.

Germany's future is now: Young guns Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz can end Euro 2024 hosts' rotten tournament run

The dynamic duo are the key for Julian Nagelsmann's side as they look to arrest a run of poor tournament showings on home soil

German newspaper pulled no punches after the country's national team were eliminated from the 2022 World Cup at the group stage. They dubbed Germany's dramatic exit as "the end of a once great and proud soccer nation". Hyperbole aside, the failure to get out of an admittedly tricky group in Qatar was an embarrassment back home.

Germany may have been a squad stuck partially in between generations, but there were few excuses to be found. This was a group of world-class players, led by a manager in Hansi Flick who two years earlier had led Bayern Munich to a treble. They didn't have to win the World Cup, but Germany were supposed to at least get out of their group. That failure, combined with a run of poor results that followed it, led to Flick being removed from his post in September.

Eighteen months on from that World Cup embarrassment, though, it feels like things are moving in the right direction for the Euro 2024 hosts. Julian Nagelsmann, after a tricky start to his tenure, has stripped it all down, entrusted a young core to do its thing, and shed the Bayern Munich loyalties that were arguably holding the side back.

At the centre of it all is an attacking midfield duo with a combined age of 42. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala are two of the most exciting, incisive talents the sport has to offer, and over the next month, they will line up together for Die Mannschaft, a dynamic partnership challenged with restoring glory to a national team in shame. In truth, despite their inexperience, they likely hold the key to making this a tournament to remember for the hosts.

(C)Getty ImagesFailure after failure

When Germany won the 2014 World Cup, it felt like it would spark a period of success for the national team. Then-manager Joachim Low had pieced together an impressive and watchable side, built around Mesut Ozil, Thomas Muller and Toni Kroos, with the world's best goalkeeper, Manuel Neuer, keeping things tight at the back. Most of the squad was either in its prime or moving towards it. Here was a unit set to dominate European football for years.

Of course, it didn't work out that way. After making it to the semi-finals of Euro 2016, the team fell off a cliff. They were eliminated at the group stage of the 2018 World Cup, in the last 16 of the pandemic-delayed Euro 2020, and crashed out in the groups in Qatar 18 months ago.

Perhaps even worse, though, was the reluctance of those in power to change things. Low stuck around for one tournament too many, while Flick deployed largely the same group of veterans as his predecessor – even when they were all out of form. Young talents were neglected, while ageing ones toiled their way to successive tournament disappointments.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesMagic Musiala

Flick did get something right, though. In Qatar, the manager had the foresight to bring a 19-year-old Musiala into the team, deploying the Bayern attacking midfielder on the left side of a 4-2-3-1 formation. And although Germany were miserable for most of the tournament, Musiala served as a rare bright spark. It was, in fact, the one positive that the German press found in their scathing assessment of the side, as former boss Jurgen Klinsmann noted that: "We have one wonder-child, there's no doubt about it, in terms of performances in Musiala – he is an exceptional, exceptional player."

Naglesmann has continued to lean on the youngster. The ex-Bayern boss has eased out an older generation, and made Musiala the focal point of his team. These days, Bayern's creative maestro comes off the right, with Ilkay Gundogan playing a more restricted role centrally.

For Germany, Musiala's duty is to pace things. Sometimes he dribbles, other times he circulates. When the 21-year-old has the ball, everything sort of slows down as he weaves through bodies and squeezes through gaps that don't really exist.

His showing against a full-strength France in March best encapsulated his abilities. Musiala completed the most passes out of any of Germany's attacking quartet, successfully dribbled past three opponents, touched the ball 81 times, and assisted his side's second goal in a 2-0 win over the Euro 2024 favourites.

GettyWirtz the wizard

Wirtz would have perhaps been in the same team as Musiala in Qatar had his rise to superstardom not been delayed by injury. He was Bayer Leverkusen's youngest-ever debutant when he took the field aged just 17 years and 16 days in early 2020, and just over two weeks later, he became the Bundesliga's youngest goal-scorer. He made his Germany debut at 18, and by 2021 was assumed to be on the rest-of-the-league to Bayern pipeline.

But things changed when Wirtz tore his ACL in the spring of 2022. His progress was stalled, and while he missed the chance to go to his first World Cup, it may have turned out to be something of a blessing in disguise. By the time Wirtz returned to action, Xabi Alonso was Leverkusen's coach, and the Spaniard has taken the attacking midfielder's game to another level.

Wirtz has become a more direct presence under Alonso, operating on the inside left of a 3-4-2-1 formation. He is an expert at turning his man and running at defences, and has the dribbling nous to find gaps. His season tally of 18 goals and 20 assists in all competitions rightly have him in the Ballon d'Or conversation.

So while Musiala slows the game down for Germany, Wirtz can speed it up. Put the two together – with Gundogan providing support between them – and the combination is a potentially deadly one.

getty imagesPerfect system

Nagelsmann's influence here is undeniable. The German has shown he has what it takes to be spoken about among the top tier of coaches, and he was perhaps unfortunate to be sacked by Bayern in March 2023. Now, he seems to have found the perfect team with whom he can rebuild his reputation.

Nagelsmann has set Germany up much like a club side, asking them to play his distinct quick, gegen-pressing style, relying on three attacking midfielders and one unorthodox false nine to grab the goals.

That man through the middle, Kai Havertz, certainly has his detractors, as the Arsenal striker has become infamous for his ability to miss big chances. But towards the end of the 2023-24 season, he started to find the net – and there were glimpses as to how he could function as an ideal attacking focal point. It might just translate to Germany, too.

When Havertz roams, spaces open up – and Musiala and Wirtz have opportunities to work their magic. Those clever off-ball elements to his game won't detract from his questionable goal-scoring record, and nor will it remove fears that Germany probably need a more incisive presence elsewhere on the pitch to put the ball in the net. But Havertz does allow Germany's best two attacking talents to do what they do best.

Aston Villa could sign "incredible" Luiz replacement for big money

Aston Villa look like they are closing in on a move for Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers as the January transfer window approaches its final couple of days.

David Ornstein claimed that the Midlands side had submitted an improved offer worth £15m for the player while they are hopeful of wrapping a deal up by Thursday.

Unai Emery

This would be the first signing that Unai Emery makes this month who will become a part of the first-team squad, and it could turn out to be a shrewd acquisition indeed.

Will the Spaniard make any other signings before the close of play on Thursday? Villa are reportedly showing interest in a Portuguese midfielder who could replace Douglas Luiz.

The latest on Douglas Luiz's future at Aston Villa

The former Manchester City player has emerged as one of Emery’s most prized assets and his performances have certainly caught the eye of the Premier League's elite, most notably Arsenal.

The Gunners are casting an eye over the midfielder as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his squad, yet Luiz appears to be content in the Midlands, saying: "I am very happy to hear the stories but I am here at Aston Villa. My focus is totally here.”

joao-palhinha-douglas-luiz-liverpool-opinion

It looks as though he is going to remain at Villa until the summer at the very least, but a big money offer could change things in a few months and Emery would suffer a big blow by losing him.

This season, the Brazilian not only ranks third in the squad for goals and assists (nine), but he also ranks fourth for big chances created (five), third for key passes per game (1.5) and sixth for successful dribbles per game (0.8) as he has proven to be a key threat going forward.

His performances have been the real driving force which has pushed Villa into securing a remarkable top-four spot and potentially even ending their near three-decade wait for a major trophy.

Three incredible players Aston Villa could sign to replace Douglas Luiz

Unai Emery may have to begin planning for the exit of the Brazilian.

ByTom Lever Jan 26, 2024

Much can change between now and the summer transfer window however and Emery may have to prepare for the fact that Luiz could depart the club.

In one reported target, however, they could have a ready-made replacement waiting to be snapped up.

Villa looking for Douglas Luiz replacement

While it is evident that the signing of Rogers is to bolster his attacking options, it looks as though Emery is also keen to reinforce his midfield area.

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Villa are keen on reigniting a move for Sporting CP midfielder Pedro Goncalves.

Pedro Goncalves of Sporting-CP

Emery was keen on signing the player during the summer transfer window but was told he would have to smash Villa’s transfer record to secure his signature.

Not much has changed just six months down the line as he has a release clause of €80m (£68m) which means that Emery may have to wait until the end of the season to launch any sort of move for the midfielder.

West Ham United are also keen on signing him, and it could be a fight between the two Premier League sides to see who can lure him to England.

Villa are well stocked in the midfield area, yet the rumours surrounding Douglas Luiz’s future won't go away and perhaps Goncalves could become an ideal replacement for the Brazilian ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Why Pedro Goncalves would be a dream Luiz replacement

The 25-year-old started his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, yet he made just one first-team appearance for the Old Gold before leaving to join FC Famalicao in 2019.

His single season with the club was productive and this led to a move to Sporting CP, where he has shone since the 2020/21 campaign.

His versatile nature – being able to play as either a central midfielder or on both flanks – has led the former Wolves gem to score 68 goals and grab 43 assists across just 158 matches for the Portuguese side.

This works out as a goal contribution every 1.4 matches, a simply stunning ratio, and there is no doubt he could add some extra attacking dynamism to the Villa midfield.

When compared to positional peers across similar leagues, Goncalves stands out across a range of metrics. He ranks in the top 2% for non-penalty goals, total shots, assists, touches in the opposition box and progressive passes received per 90 across the previous 365 days, and it is clear he is among one of the finest forward-thinking midfielders when compared to his peers.

He may already be known to supporters in England due to his wonderful goal against Arsenal in last season's Europa League clash, where the midfielder beat Aaron Ramsdale from the halfway line as the club reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

Former Gunners forward Kevin Campbell dubbed the goal “an incredible strike” and it shows exactly what he can offer should he join Villa.

For his club side this term, Goncalves currently ranks second among the squad for goals and assists (12) in the top flight, while also ranking second for shots on target per game (1.2), first for big chances created (ten) and second for key passes per game (2.2), yet more evidence of his sublime talents in the heart of the pitch.

While it could cost Villa a pretty penny to sign Goncalves – either this month or in the summer – he should definitely be earmarked as a potential successor to Luiz should he move on.

Aged 25, the midfielder is arguably still hit his peak years and this could tempt Emery into making a more concrete move for the player, while his attacking abilities could take the pressure off Ollie Watkins as their main offensive weapon.

The 5 foot 8 maestro is clearly ready for the next step in his career and joining the Villa Park side could allow him to elevate his performances even more, playing against clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City on a regular basis.

These displays will arguably attract more attractive suitors than Villa and this suggests the Spaniard must act swiftly to bring him to the Premier League before it is too late.

Veteran spinner Gareth Batty proved their nemesis with 4 for 34, but pacemen Sam Curran and Morne Morkel each chipped in with two wickets apiece during an action-packed session.Warwickshire, needing 142 to land their third Championship win of the summer, resumed on their overnight score of 148 for 3 only to lose nightwatchman Craig Miles leg before to Rikki Clarke’s fourth ball of the day.On a gloomy morning, the visiting top order attempted to dig in but found batting a struggle, particularly against the pace of Morkel, who had shouts for leg before and a catch in the cordon turned down against Adam Hose and Dominic Sibley respectively.Warwickshire’s fifth-wicket partners saw off Clarke who, after 45 minutes from the Pavilion End, gave way to the offspin of Batty. In his opening over Batty had two leg-before shouts in three balls turned down by umpire James Middlebrook as Sibley battled on.With 100 runs required for victory, Warwickshire lost Hose for 21, squared up on the walk to one from Curran that thudded into the back pad forcing umpire Martin Saggers to uphold the leg before appeal. Four balls later and again from around the wicket, Curran swung one back in to pluck put Matthew Lamb’s off stump with one that nipped through the gate via a thin inside edge.Warwickshire’s demise continued as they lost their third wicket inside seven balls and without addition to the total. Sibley, looking to rotate the strike against Batty, called a hesitant Tim Ambrose through for a risky single only for Scott Borthwick to swoop and throw to the non-striker’s end where Ben Foakes ran out his counterpart for a duck.Curran, whose workload in the match was restricted to 30 overs under an ECB request, gave way at the Vauxhall End to Morkel who ended Sibley’s 231-minute stay for 73 with his fifth delivery. Sibley, driving on the up, appeared stunned when the tall South African stooped in his follow through to claim a stunning return catch low to his left. With 81 still needed, Jeetan Patel danced down the pitch to Batty only to miss an attempted heave over mid-on and gift a regulation stumping to Foakes. Last man Oliver Hannon-Dalby then skied an attempted slog sweep to Batty who ran around toward mid-on to claim the catch and end the match.

Bangladesh not giving up on semi-finals yet – Tamim Iqbal

Bangladesh are not giving up their semi-final hopes just yet. That’s what Tamim Iqbal has said, despite his team’s chances of getting there coming down significantly following a 48-run loss to Australia. Having lost to England and New Zealand too, Bangladesh not only have to win their three remaining games but also hope other results go in their favour.”I think we still have a chance,” Tamim said, when asked if Bangladesh were now aiming to finish at No. 5, as the best of the rest. “I don’t think any of my team-mates are thinking along those lines. We have a chance if we win three matches. If God forbid we don’t have anything to play for, then we will think about No. 5.”Tamim said one way of ensuring everything goes right would be for Bangladesh to minimise the kind of mistakes they made at Trent Bridge. He felt the batsmen did their job in going past 300 for the third time in the competition, and that they could even have got to their target of 382 had he or Shakib Al Hasan stuck around until at least the 30th over, which could have left them a T20-style chase in the last 20.WATCH on Hotstar (India only) – Mushfiqur Rahim’s unbeaten 102“A positive side is that we made 320-plus in our last two matches, and both were chases,” Tamim said. “The batsmen believe that we can chase around 320-330. I think we lost the game in a spell of three or four overs. We actually bowled well in the last three overs. I think we have to minimise mistakes.”I am not too experienced in chasing a big score, so I stopped looking at the scoreboard. I was trying to be 180-200 at the 30-over mark. It would give us a chance in the last 20 overs chasing the remaining runs. We wouldn’t have made 330-odd if we had gone hard early. I think Shakib and I got out at the wrong times.”After making 62, his highest score in the tournament, Tamim played on to Mitchell Starc in the 25th over, setting Bangladesh back at a crucial stage. “Maybe everything is not going according to plan. I have felt confident in the last two matches, but luck hasn’t been on my side. I normally play this shot through third man quite well but it wasn’t my day.”I think I am hitting it well, but it is a matter of time that I get a big one. But the problem is, we don’t have much time.”
