THE BIGGER PICTURE
Klopp announced his exit earlier this year, bringing to an end his nine-year-long stint as Liverpool boss. The German hasn't exactly had the best farewell season as the Reds only managed to clinch the Carabao Cup this season despite having been in the run for the Premier League title before a late collapse cost them the chance to fight with Manchester City and Arsenal until the end.

Klopp does not boast the best trophy cabinet during his stint with the Merseyside club, however, he has made a special place in Liverpool fans' hearts thanks to his transformation of the club. The club did undergo multiple title battles, however, it was overshadowed by the Titanic success of Manchester City.
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino will be keen to strengthen his side further in the January window and is reportedly on the trail of an impressive defender at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea plot January transfer business
Chelsea are usually busy in the transfer market and this month looks to be no different as the Premier League giants aim to improve on a frustrating start to their English top-flight campaign. Rumours are flying regarding who could potentially pitch up in west London this window and Girona striker Artem Dovbykis said to be high on the Blues' radar as they look to bring in a new forward to rival Nicolas Jackson for starting opportunities in the offensive areas, as per The Sun.
The report states that Pochettino has sent scouts to watch the Ukraine international in action over the last few weeks and indicate that his physical attributes have won favour with the Argentinian coach, who wants to add more muscle to his frontline. Senegal international Jackson will head to the African Cup of Nations with Senegal, making the arrival of another striker a priority this window.

Nonetheless, Bournemouth star Dominic Solanke is not believed to be a target for a sensational return to Chelsea in January, with journalist Si Phillips claiming that rumours suggesting the 26-year-old could move back to his old club are unfounded.
January is notoriously a difficult window to navigate as clubs try to maximise the value of their players mid-season; however, a defender now looks to be on the agenda in SW6 and Chelsea could be prepared to spend big money to land his services despite rival competition, according to a report.
Chelsea keen on Jean-Clair Todibo
According to Foot Mercato, Chelsea are ready to get their transfer chequebook out to sign OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, who has also drawn interest from Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in recent times.

The report states that Pochettino is not satisfied with his current defensive options and could now look to swoop for the France international, who has previously been labelled "superb" by talent scout Jacek Kulig. They could be boosted by the fact Manchester United haven't yet made a move, though they continue to scout the centre-back at close quarters.
Nice defenderJean-Clair Todibo.
Chelsea could also be handed a leg-up in their pursuit of the 24-year-old due to the fact that a potential move to join Spurs is set to collapse, leading them to target Genoa defender Radu Dragusin instead, which could pave the way for Todibo, who has notched one assist in 14 appearances this campaign, to move to the other side of London (Todibo statistics – Transfermarkt).
This story is unlikely to go away any time soon and we could well see Todibo move to the Premier League this month; however, it remains to be seen where exactly he will end up.
Tottenham see themselves as the "perfect" move for an "underappreciated" player, and they could be ready to pay £40-50 million for him.
Spurs identify next signing after Werner and Dragusin
Following the official signings of both Timo Werner from RB Leipzig and Radu Dragusin from Genoa, attention turns to how Ange Postecoglou can further improve his squad before deadline day on January 31.
The departures of Eric Dier, Ashley Phillips and Djed Spence, with all three leaving on loan, free up squad space for Tottenham to make another addition.

It is widely believed that Spurs want a new midfield number eight after sealing Dragusin's arrival, with there being serious links to Chelsea star Conor Gallagher.
The England international is someone who Tottenham were seriously interested in last summer, with reliable transfer source Fabrizio Romano backing their "concrete" talks to sign him in 2023.
“I think it is difficult," said Romano on Spurs potentially signing Gallagher to GiveMeSport.
"The reality is that they like Gallagher and have done since last summer, this is not new. We know that last summer including on deadline day Tottenham tried to make it happen with Chelsea for Gallagher. They had a concrete conversation, but then Chelsea said no. Now I'm not aware of any direct negotiation between Chelsea and Tottenham for Gallagher so far, but we have to see what happens in the next weeks."
The 23-year-old has been a star player under Mauricio Pochettino this season, making 19 league appearances as their best performer by average match rating according to WhoScored.
Conor Gallagher for Chelsea
He's also Chelsea's joint-top assist maker with Cole Palmer, highlighting his importance as both a creative presence and a real source of energy in the midfield. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg's future remains uncertain, and Gallagher could well be a top replacement for the Dane if he were to depart.
Tottenham see themselves as "perfect" for Gallagher
Journalist Dean Jones, speaking to GiveMeSport this week, shared an update on Tottenham's chances of signing the player this winter.
It is believed Spurs would pursue a £40-£50m deal for Gallagher if he were to become available, and the Lilywhites see themselves as the "perfect" destination for him.
"Conor Gallagher is a player they have an interest in," reported Jones.
"They find it hard to believe that he will actually become available for transfer but, if he genuinely is, they think they are the perfect club for him to end up at.
Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher
"If they could get Conor Gallagher for £40million to £50million, I think they would probably see that as a good deal and one that they would actually try to pursue.
"But at the moment, obviously, they have still got the problem – on an emotional level on Conor Gallagher's side of things."
The former Crystal Palace loanee has proved himself a worthy top-flight asset, and one Tottenham could really strengthen their ranks with by signing for Postecoglou.
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou.
"Conor Gallagher is the new Mason Mount – a hard-working, homegrown midfielder who is underappreciated by many," said Sky Sports Analyst Joe Shread.
"Despite Chelsea's sporting directors appearing extremely open to selling him in the summer, Gallagher has quickly won the trust of Pochettino with his industry, attitude and quality."

Arsenal are prepared to sell a "top-level" player, and he could even leave in January, with manager Mikel Arteta's personal transfer priority shared this week.
Edu makes transfer admission ahead of January
Sporting director Edu, speaking on Amazon Prime Video recently (via football.london), made a promising transfer admission ahead of the winter window.
The Brazilian has stated that Arsenal are "prepared" for what will be a hectic window, with reports suggesting that they have their eyes on strengthening a few key positions.
Edu is a "big fan" of £100m Brazilian, Arsenal will push for him in 2024
The Gunners are ready to swoop next year.
ByEmilio Galantini Dec 20, 2023
"To work for a football club like Arsenal, it is always busy isn’t it," said Edu on Arsenal's January plans.
"You need to put in a lot of effort and energy and dedicate a lot of time, but of course in January and the summer, it does intensify a bit. We are prepared. We have big people around the club to support me and the decisions. We always have our targets – it is important to be prepared for every single scenario – that is very important.
"We have so many people working on one signing – we have people who are in recruitment, leader of operations and it’s a big team effort to sign one player so that is what makes me proud because the way we are working and connecting as a club, that is what makes me so proud because I am part of it, but what makes me very happy is the way we are working today."
It is believed Arsenal want to sign two new full-backs, a new midfielder and striker, but their lavish spending in the summer means the Gunners may have to compromise on a couple of those (The Independent).
Ivan Toney
Arteta is arguably lacking options up front, with Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah standing out as his only natural choices. Injuries could severely detriment Arsenal's attacking options if they're not careful, and they've been heavily linked with a move for Brentford star Ivan Toney.
Arsenal are seen as current favourites to sign Toney, according to recent reports, and signing a new forward appears to be firmly on the agenda next month.
Arsenal prepared to sell Nketiah
Journalist Wayne Veysey has an update on this for Football Insider.
The reporter claims signing a striker is Arteta's personal "priority" at Arsenal in January, with the club also prepared to sell Nketiah in 2024.
Arsenal 5-0 Sheffield United

Bournemouth 0-4 Arsenal

Arsenal 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Crystal Palace 0-1 Arsenal

The Englishman could depart as soon as the winter window as Arsenal's manager and the club's recruitment team seemingly plot an attacking overhaul.
Indeed, it is believed a January exit cannot be ruled out for Nketiah if they're presented with the right offer, coming as Arsenal seek to raise funds for new signings.
The 24-year-old, who's scored five goals in 16 league appearances, has also been called a "top-level" player by Arteta. However, it appears Nketiah could well be sacrificed in Arsenal's hunt for a prolific marksman.
Chennai, the original host, has failed to sort out the issue with its stands, but will stage Qualifier 1 with Visakhapatnam hosting the Eliminator and Qualifier 2
Nagraj Gollapudi22-Apr-2019Hyderabad has been confirmed as the venue for the IPL final on May 12 after Chennai Super Kings failed to provide a solution to the long-standing issue of the three disputed – and closed – stands at MA Chidambaram Stadium. However, Chennai will get to host the first play-off match – Qualifier 1 – on May 7 while Vishakapatnam will stage the Eliminator and Qualifier 2 on May 8 and 10.As reported last week, Super Kings – the defending champions and, therefore, the rightful hosts of the final – had been given time by the IPL authorities to identify a way around the problem. ESPNcricinfo understands that the Super Kings management has since conveyed its inability to do so by May 12, and the final has now gone to Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, the home venue of last season’s runners-up, Sunrisers Hyderabad.ESPNcricinfo understands that the BCCI opted to retain Chepauk to host Qualifier 1 since it wanted to credit Super Kings for winning the title last year. Super Kings have hosted four home games so far this season, including the season-opener against Royal Challengers Bangalore, with the stands closed. However, IPL officials were concerned about the bad optics the vacant stands present, especially on TV, for the marquee matches. The Chennai corporation had closed the three stands – I, J and K, adding up to roughly 12,000 seats – in 2012 as there were discrepancies when the stadium was refurbished before the World Cup in 2011. Only once since then have they been opened to the public, after the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association got special permission to do so for an India v Pakistan ODI in December 2012.The BCCI wanted to stage the playoffs at the prominent venues but with the league phase only ending on May 5, it is believed there was not enough time to get venues like Mumbai and Bengaluru ready. Also, with the general elections running parallel to the IPL, the other big venues were ruled out.
Joe Clarke could become the youngest Notts player to score two hundreds in a match – but only if they don’t declare overnight in pursuit of victory

Two centuries on debut for his new county would be quite a way for Joe Clarke to begin life at Nottinghamshire. But he will not know until the final morning if that opportunity will present itself. He finished the third day against Yorkshire at Trent Bridge on 97 not out and with Nottinghamshire already holding a lead of 446, and clearly planning an overnight declaration, it would be perfectly permissible to pull the innings without a second thought. At 22 years and 316 days he is in touching distance of becoming the youngest batsman to score two hundreds in a match for Nottinghamshire. As he knows he must be, he was philosophical about the outcome. “They said they’ll think about it in the morning – what happens happens,” he shrugged, knowing that the only dignified response was for him to put team ahead of individual feats. The decision rests with his captain, Steven Mullaney. An extra over or two does not sound much, but captains have nightmares about allowing such a liberty and the opposition being nine down at the end. Team ethic is a precious thing, but so is team morale and allowing Clarke to try to achieve something special might just cause a buzz that will translate into new-ball wickets. Both approaches have their merits.Michael Atherton once declared an England innings in the 1994-95 Ashes series with Graeme Hick two runs short of his first Ashes hundred – and that was not even at the end of the day. That didn’t go down well.Clarke’s debut has already been lustrous enough. He has played sublimely, typically stylish through the offside. His unbeaten 97 came from only 125 balls and followed 112 in the first innings. He clearly has England potential although this pitch has been slow, swing largely absent and Yorkshire’s attack moderate. More challenging days lie ahead.Nottinghamshire have so far looked a class above. They established a first-innings lead of 117 before lunch on the third day and then batted again with great contentment, amassing a further 329 for 5 at an indecent rate of 4.70. With the floodlights slicing through a cold April evening, Clarke took single off the first ball of the final over from the part-time offspinner Adam Lyth only for Samit Patel to hack at the rest of the over without getting him back on strike.Three batsmen joined Clarke in passing 50: a free-spirited contribution from Ben Duckett, who reverse-swept Joe Root for four to reach his fifty and who already has more than 400 first-class runs this season; a punchy 75 from Chris Nash, before Yorkshire were finally trampled into the dirt by Mullaney’s hearty 48-ball effort. Nothing was more dismissive than his straight six late in the day against the medium pace of Matthew Waite.Duckett flirted with second slip before Duanne Olivier had him caught in that fashion. Nash mistimed a pull at the same bowler. Mullaney eventually dragged another delivery from Waite into his stumps.Yorkshire supporters needing solace might have turned instead to a Facebook group proclaiming the delights of the Yorkshire Dales (prospective incomers greeted with suspicion so best to say nowt else) where the Broad Acres looked at their most resplendent. Blue skies shone over Clapham and Arncliffe, refreshing dips were taken in the Foss at Stainforth Force and lambs took their first uncertain steps into the world. The sort of glory that would have persuaded the old curmudgeon Philip Larkin to take off his bicycle clips in reverence, had he not saved that gesture for instead.Few things fill Yorkshire folk with exaltation more than the scenery of the Dales. Yorkshire cricket perhaps. But on the evidence of the first three days at Trent Bridge, it might be best to get some rain repellent on the walking boots. It’s very early days, but against a strong side Yorkshire have been dipping their shoulder into the wind.Yorkshire’s coach, Andrew Gale, was left to assert that his side were capable of batting through the final day. They will be relieved (as will England) that they will have the services of Root, who caused brief alarm late in the day when he injured a finger on his left hand, diving to stop a cover drive from Clarke. No lasting damage, no thoughts of a scan, was the gist of Gale’s assessment after medical staff had made a few precautionary checks.Their attack – four right-arm seamers and some fill-in offspin from Root – looked predictable. They have three quicks, Matthew Fisher, David Willey and Tim Bresnan, missing here, but much onus rests with their newly signed South African Duanne Olivier. On Monday, an early judgment will be made about the quality of their batting.

It's pretty clear that signing a new centre-back will be Jurgen Klopp's priority for Liverpool transfer-wise this year, but supporters will probably have to wait until the summer before anything of substance occurs.
The Premier League pace-setters have been in fine fettle this term after recovering from an abject 2022/23 campaign that threatened to topple Klopp's dynasty, but with some excellent summer signings making up a brand new engine to charge the high-octane system, silverware is very much attainable as the business end draws closer.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
There have been shouts over the past several months that Liverpool still need to complete their midfield work with a specialist No. 6, but Wataru Endo's recent purple patch and Alexis Mac Allister's fine job in the deep-lying role suggest that focus could and should shift elsewhere.
And with Joel Matip's anterior cruciate ligament injury ending his season at the start of December, the concerns surrounding the defensive depth are only heightened.
Liverpool transfer news – Ousmane Diomande
Prior to the opening of the window, the Daily Mail compiled a list of options that Liverpool could choose from the bolster their backline this year, and while he's one of the more expensive picks, Sporting CP's Ousmane Diomande could be the dream addition.
Only 20 years old, Ivorian Diomande has been making waves with Sporting Lisbon of late and could even have a higher ceiling than teammate and fellow Reds transfer target Goncalo Inacio, who is technically superb but somewhat lacking in raw defensive strength.
Diomande has a buyout clause of €80m (£69m) and it's uncertain whether Sporting would acquiesce to discussions of a whittled-down fee, but if so, Liverpool will be sure to pounce.
Ousmane Diomande's profile
Contracted until 2027, Diomande has chalked up 38 senior appearances for his Portuguese outfit since signing from Danish side FC Midtjylland for an initial fee of €7.5m (£6m) on January 31, 2023.
Said to be “one of the most exciting CB prospects in Europe" by scout Jacek Kulig, Diomande is only 20 years old but is already proving to be one of the most dynamic young defenders around, with a modern skill set attracting the attention of some of Europe's most illustrious teams.

As per Sofascore, the 6 foot 3 titan has completed 15 appearances in the Liga Portugal, scoring one goal, supplying one assist, completing 91% of his passes, averaging 5.7 ball recoveries per game and succeeding with 64% of his contested duels.
Such metrics highlight a roundedness that will only serve him well in a side such as Liverpool, where the central defenders are expected to dominate the possession and control the flow of the match.
Taking an average of 79 touches per game, Diomande is not far away from being as active on the ball as Virgil van Dijk, who averages 90 touches per game in the Premier League.
To emphasise how dynamic and multi-faceted he is in his style, Diomande ranks among the top 16% of centre-backs across divisions similar to the Portuguese top-flight over the past year for goals, the top 9% for shot-creating actions, the top 3% for pass completion, the top 2% for passes attempted, the top 5% for progressive passes, the top 8% for progressive carries, the top 7% for successful take-ons and the top 20% per 90, as per FBref.

ByAngus Sinclair Jan 13, 2024
What this signifies is a superlative technical ability and a constant desire to drive forward – either as the vehicle or through his distribution – and when marrying this with his aforementioned precision in his defensive duels, Diomande really would be the perfect player to bolster the Liverpool defence.
How Ousmane Diomande compares to Goncalo Inacio
As mentioned earlier, Diomande is not the only Sporting defender to be on Klopp's radar, with Inacio, aged 22, holding a €60m (£52m) release clause and with reports even suggesting that Liverpool remain interested this month after seeing advances fall flat last summer.
Considered a comparable player to the Ivory Coast international by FBref's 'Similar Players' model, Inacio ranks among the top 8% of positional peers for assists, the top 4% for shot-creating actions, the top 1% for passes attempted and progressive passes, the top 3% for progressive carries and the top 6% for successful take-ons per 90.
Discernibly, there are striking similarities between the respective starlets, and while Inacio has been hailed for his "complete" array of abilities by Kulig, there are a few question marks lingering over his defensive application that could dissuade the Reds from prioritising his signature.
He only ranks among the top 58% for tackles (Diomande ranks in the top 80%) and in the league this season, while impressive, has won just 48% of his contested duels, which certainly doesn't evoke the confidence needed for a prominent role in Klopp's system.
For example, the 20-year-old Jarell Quansah, who has only emerged as a first-team member this season, has won 61% of his duels in the Premier League while also showcasing his ball-playing skills with a 90% pass completion rate.
Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah.
For all of Inacio's innate talent, it does seem that he is just not the most naturally formidable of defenders, instead flourishing his style through his high-class technical skills.
And while Diomande may require a greater outlay, it might be a prudent move, in the long run, to forge ahead with his signature and ensure that Liverpool have a player of genuine world-class credentials, with Klopp capable of shaping him into an "elite talent", as was said again by the voluble Kulig.
A decision will not need to be made until the summer but Liverpool would be wise to pull the strings soon to ensure that they are the favourites to swoop in and land their man.
