A real pressing problem at Liverpool FC?

Under the stewardship of new boss Brendan Rodgers, Liverpool have started the new league campaign in similarly inconsistent form to last season, even if the performances themselves have by and large been on an upward curve. The main issue holding them back from converting their increasingly impressive displays, though, has been the penchant that the side have developed for individual errors at the back, which could harm their ambitions this year.

From their opening seven league games so far this season, the side have conceded 12 goals and kept just one clean sheet, coming in their latest league outing against Stoke on home turf. This has seen them render just six points and they currently sit in 14th in the table below the likes of Sunderland, Swansea and most importantly, city rivals Everton and they’re already eight points off the top four.

While Rodgers and captain Steven Gerrard have spoken about how the side still has realistic ambitions of a top four finish this term, in private, they must realise that with such a young side, inconsistent performances are par for the course and that a top eight finish is much more likely.

Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has already shown his commitment to the new direction that Rodgers is taking the club by refusing to put any such minimum requirements on what the side must achieve this season in terms of a league finish or cup success, but that’s not to say that mediocrity will be indulged and the back five have been seriously under-par throughout their start to the season.

That’s not to say that the team’s defensive struggles have been consigned solely to their domestic campaign, though, for the side has also conceded six goals in their last two Europa League clashes away to Swiss outfit Young Boys and at home to Udinese, where a loss in concentration, an own goal and some excellent finishing saw the Serie A outfit score three times in a bonkers 26-minute spell as Liverpool lost control of a game which for long spells they had been the better side to tell a crushingly familiar story.

Reflecting on the Udinese defeat, Rodgers told reporters last week: “We had been so dominant in the game and the players were outstanding, so I was just frustrated for them that we had let Udinese back in the game, and then ultimately come out of it with nothing. The players give everything and we are just working very hard to cut out the mistakes, because I think once we cut them out, we can be a real force as a team. If we can just cut out the mistakes that unfortunately we are getting punished for, then I believe we can do very well.”

Against Manchester City at Anfield, the side may have achieved a 2-2 draw against the current Premier League champions with n inexperienced and youthful side, but it was once again a case of what might have been, with Pepe Reina and Martin Kelly combining to hand Yaya Toure the first and Martin Skrtel playing a suicidal back-pass to Carlos Tevez for the second in a game that they again dominated for prolonged spells.

Last season, for the most part, despite their form falling away towards the back end of the campaign after their Carling Cup triumph, the back four was the platform upon which their early form was based upon and they kept a healthy 12 clean sheets, two more then Chelsea managed. They’d be fortunate on current form to reach a similar tally.

It’s not just that the individual form of key players has fallen away to such an alarming extent, with Pepe Reina seemingly in a slump from which there is no return and in the nasty habit of gifting easy goals away, but the system which Rodgers has attempted to implement has taken longer than previously expected for the squad to adjust to.

The 4-3-3 system which he prefers revolves around dominating possession in the middle of the park. The central midfield player at the tip of the three is supposed to support the lone striker, while the two behind him dominate and control the tempo. The width is created almost entirely from the overlapping of the full-backs, with the two wingers often asked to play in an inverted style to create the space outside of them.

This in turn means that the two centre-backs have to split wider apart than they’ve normally been asked to in the past so that they can cover the space that was occupied by the full-backs last term, while a central midfielder, normally Joe Allen, drops a little deeper to plug the gap between them if they’re caught on the break. While Agger is certainly comfortable on the ball, his lack of playing time appears to have caught up with him so far while Skrtel is far removed from the dominant force he can sometimes be.

Of course, this is not to say that the back four at the club is beyond repair and in Martin Kelly, Andre Wisdom and Jack Robinson, they have three full-backs capable of playing for the club for years to come while Sebastian Coates looks well placed to fully take over from the ageing Jamie Carragher at some point in the next year or so.

As a unit, they’ve not been at their best yet and with the rest of the side adapting to the demands of Rodgers methods well enough the past month or so in particular, things will only improve in the future, but the individual errors which have stained their promising, if unfulfilled start to the season need to become a thing of the past and something which they’ve gotten out of their system early on.

A clean sheet against a physical Stoke side is a step in the right direction, but consistency is the key if they want to be a top eight side again this year, which ability-wise, they’re more than capable of becoming once more.

Jagielka praised for his ‘animal’ performance

Eveton’s Tim Howard has praised his team mate Phil Jagielka after his ‘animal’ like performance against QPR, as the Toffees remain in the top four.

The Merseyside club secured the hard fought draw after coming from behind against a struggling Rangers side.

The controversial dismissal by referee John Moss means that the South African will now miss next Sunday’s Merseyside Derby.

Tim Howard insisted that the point picked up in West London was a well earned, especially as they had a man short and Everton won’t feel to down hearted ahead of their clash with Liverpool as Jagielka is in such defiant form.

“Jags was immense, Howard told the Liverpool Echo.

“He’s grown and grown and looks like he will cement himself in the England team like that.

“He’s been doing that for us for years. He’s a player who does his own job and at the risk of making a mistake he’ll try and cover for everyone else on the field too. He’s a leader, he’s solid, and was an animal against QPR.

“It was a classic centre half performance- he was everywhere. It was just one of those nights you knew he wasn’t going to get beaten. He’s been a rock for us for a long time and we need him to have the momentum going into the derby.”

Ipswich Players Not Fit To Wear The Shirt

I don’t think many people were expecting managerless Ipswich Town to play fantastically on Saturday but nobody expected that the team would be as bad as they were against a fairly average Sheffield Wednesday side.

The Yorkshire side previously had not won in 10 games but Ipswich let them stroll to a 3-0 win and if their finishing wasn’t so dire then it could have been more.

After the game caretaker manager Chris Hutchings said he felt it was the more experienced players that let him down whereas younger players like Luke Hyam and Josh Carson gave it their all. Hutchings also admitted that the fans chants of “You’re not fit to wear the shirt” were probably accurate for a few players.

The performance highlighted exactly how big the task is for whoever takes over the hotseat. As I have said before, all of the warning signs are there for a team destined to be relegated so the new manager will have to make an instant impact.

The frustrating part is that on paper the team aren’t actually too bad and the squad is not lacking in ability. However, it is obvious that there is no unity within the dressing room and having so many players either on loan or short term contracts isn’t exactly helping. What is more worrying is that even before the flood of loan signings came in the senior players weren’t giving it their all.

It seems like Carlos Edwards was right last week when he said that Paul Jewell was too soft for his own good. Unfortunately the nice guy approach didn’t work out for Jewell and the players let him down massively. Nothing has changed since he left and Ipswich desperately need a man who will say exactly what is on his mind if the players aren’t performing for him.

Roy Keane had this approach and it is fair to say that the players respected him. What went wrong for Keane is a completely different story to Jewell as the Irishman filled the team with gutless mercenaries.

What the team really needs is a man as firm as Keane but also able to buy players with the right attitude and tactical awareness. I have mentioned before that I would love Ipswich to steal MK Dons manager Karl Robinson but I have to admit I now question whether he would be the right man. Robinson has impressed everyone with what he has done in his first two years of management and he would be the ultimate long term choice for the club in my eyes. However the team desperately need a manager who is more experienced and would instantly command the players respect in order to save the club from relegation.

Surprisingly Ipswich have been linked with Ian Holloway who would be the best appointment that any fan could dream of but sadly I think this will always be a dream. Holloway has a great side at Blackpool and he would be insane to leave them for a team in a mess like Ipswich. The strange thing is Holloway applied to manage Ipswich after they sacked Jim Magilton but the men at the top chose Roy Keane instead and Blackpool snapped up Holloway soon after.

The good news is that there are a few good managers about who would fit still fit the bill. Mick McCarthy would do a good job and so would Owen Coyle or Alan Curbishley. The only downside is that there are a few clubs hunting these managers so Ipswich will have to convince them that their future lies in Suffolk over anywhere else.

Crystal Palace star added to England squad

Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha has been called up to the England squad ahead of Wednesday’s friendly against Sweden.

The 20-year-old has been drafted in due to injuries suffered by Wayne Rooney and Theo Walcott and could be in line for his first Three Lions cap, according to the Daily Mail.

Zaha, who has been in fine form for the Championship team, took to Twitter to voice his happiness:

“Wow, everything’s happening so fast” He said.

The attacker drew special praise from his manager Ian Holloway following Palace’s 2-1 victory over Peterborough on Saturday:

“It is wonderful to see such an exhilarating, exciting player – to run with the ball like that, and outrun people running without the ball, is amazing”

He was also the subject of admiration of Posh manager Darren Ferguson

“(He is) the best player outside of the Premiership, hands down. At times he was unplayable.

“Since the first time I saw him I thought he was going right to the top.”

Zaha is the first second-tier player to receive a senior international call-up since Jay Bothroyd in 2010, when he was playing for Cardiff.

The move could be a tactical manoeuvre from the FA, who are aware that the attacker is eligible to represent the Ivory Coast, the nation he was born in.

Both Raheem Sterling and Carl Jenkinson, who could play for Jamaica and Finland respectively, are also in the squad for the friendly.

Fergie feels Title race is wide open

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes that the Premier League title race is wide open this season.

Many have predicted a straight fight between the Red Devils and local rivals Manchester City, with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal seemingly unable to match the consistency of their northern counterparts.

United have struggled defensively this season, but their attacking approach has seen them keep pace with the Sky Blues.

This was displayed during their 4-3 victory over Reading, in which Fergie’s men were behind to the newly promoted side.

In the aftermath of the game the Scot claimed the battle for the top prize in English football could be won by a number of teams:

“At this time you can’t really say that.” He responded when asked by The Metro if this season will be a two-horse race.

“I think the important thing for us is to take lessons from the mistakes we are making and find a solution, because we are going to need it.”

Despite their defensive frailties, midfielder Michael Carrick believes the team always back themselves to recover due to their attacking talents:

“We always feel we’ve got the firepower from different people.”

Any real cause for concern at Newcastle?

Newcastle fans can’t be blamed for despairing at the most recent sequence of events over the Christmas period.  The defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal were expected but the fact that the Magpies mustered 3 goals in each game yet still managed to lose on both occasions is a source of frustration.

Alan Pardew has mentioned that performances don’t matter if you can’t put points on the board. The eight defeats in the last ten Premier League outings show that things aren’t exactly rosy at St. James’s Park.  It is not time to be panicking just yet, but we aren’t far off. There appears to be an air of complacency that Newcastle are too good to go down, and that their personnel wouldn’t let it happen. This isn’t true. If the whole squad was fully fit you may accept this point of contention, but it seems an all too familiar story at the moment with the squad littered with injuries.

[post_link url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/football-blogs/the-top-15-premier-league-moments-of-2012, https://www.footballfancast.com/football-blogs/the-15-things-we-have-learned-about-the-premier-league-in-2012, https://www.footballfancast.com/top-10s/see-in-the-transfer-window” target=”_blank” type=”tower”]

The midfield area is particularly threadbare and whilst Bigirimana has shown signs of promise who are we kidding if we suggest he is anywhere near the finished article.  The loss of Yohan Cabaye has crushed the midfield this season with his range of passing and influence being the heartbeat of the side. This is why Newcastle fans still adamantly chant ‘don’t sell Cabaye’ every game despite him not even playing at the moment.

The tackling and tenacity of Cheick Tiote remain this season, but he hasn’t shone as much as in previous seasons with his insistence on passing it to Danny Simpson, who continues to deliver mediocre at best crosses, and the Ivorian guilty of holding the ball for those extra few crucial seconds in attack. He will be gone for a month in January as well, due to the African Cup of Nations and that’s a blow they could do without on Tyneside. Vurnon Anita just started to get into his stride in the attacking midfield role before he was injured against Manchester United, but he needs to ensure his presence is felt on a more permanent basis, when he returns.  The emergence of Obertan and Marveaux is reason to be cheery, adding some incision to attack but they have too had their injury struggles and not put together a string of games in black and white often enough for the supporters liking.

There definitely appears to be a difference between now and the 2008-2009 relegation season though in that this time the Magpies appear to show some fight, but this is accepted with an air of caution. This fight has scrapped them over the line so far this season, in the matches they have won; they have yet to dazzle their fans. They reluctantly accepted QPR handing them victory on a plate just over a week ago and the lack of fluency in the midfield was fitting of both teams struggling at the bottom.

It is not as if Newcastle have done themselves any favours with their style of play, deciding to pump it up top when under the cosh. The reason why they have achieved some success in front of goal in the last few games is because of their courage to play the ball along the floor. Now they are down in the mire they need to play their way out of trouble, rather than booting it long to Ba or Cisse.  The January window is upon us and the addition of two or three bodies would be welcomed, whether that will realistically happen is another matter. There is a lot of worry about Ba leaving; understandably, he has been the source of goals. If he leaves in January another striker would be a necessity. If he were to go it could be a blessing in disguise for Cisse, to assume this would be the case is arrogant. Pardew rolled the dice and risked relegation when he let Andy Carroll without finding a replacement in February 2010. Shefti Kuqi didn’t count as a replacement, even if he was a gimmick for the fans. If he tries similar tactics in January if Ba were to go the 51 year old may as well raise a white flag in the air accepting that relegation is hanging in the balance.

If we are to assume Pardew sees through his claims and reinforces or at the very least doesn’t weaken in January, after admitting undercooking it in the summer, which is a big if, then Newcastle will have enough.  There has been positive noises from the Magpies boss but he needs to make sure he keep the squad fresh regardless of what occurs in this next window.

The attacking verve returning to the play is something that needs to stay if they are to succeed at St James’s Park. Ben Arfa, Obertan and Marveaux remain players that can unlock the doors to victory, with either pace or creativity and Newcastle need to utilise the qualities those players possess.  The back four also needs to be settled. There is quality in the shape of Coloccini and Williamson as a pairing; a clean sheet to add to this attacking flair of late would put things back on track. Talking their way to points is cheap, and don’t be deluded that Newcastle will be fine soon. They will remain uncertain of safety right until the latter stages of April or maybe even beyond. The Europa League has crucified the squad and whilst you suspect they will be safe, they will need a little more than battling spirit and soon.

Newcastle don’t have the dead wood in their squad with players resting on their laurels which they had when they were relegated in 2009. It is more that the players are tired and shot for confidence at not being able to string results together. The last spell may have hurt fans but if the players can maintain their form of late they will survive. If they take their eye off the ball and start dreaming of chasing the European places after their next win, then they will soon see another thing coming.  Ensuring survival has to be sole focus for the rest of the season for Newcastle.

Villas-Boas plays down Spurs’ need for a striker

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas has played down the club’s need to sign a striker following their 1-1 Premier League draw with Norwich.

Spurs have been linked with a number of front-men in recent weeks, with the likes of David Villa and Leandro Damaio believed to be high on their list of targets.

With Emmanuel Adebayor currently at the Africa Cup of Nations, AVB has Jermain Defoe as his only central attacker, but the Portuguese coach played down speculation of arrivals ahead of the transfer deadline:

“David Villa? No, I don’t think so!” he told Sky Sports.

“At the moment I have told you that we are willing to take a risk on Jermain Defoe’s injury. Defoe played 90 minutes and played very well.

“No, I don’t think so (there will be any players leaving).”

Despite being favourites to claim three points at Carrow Road, AVB conceded that 1-1 was a fair result:

“During the second half we put on a show, and showed great character,” he added.

“It’s a pity that we didn’t have time to go 2-1 up because we created a number of opportunities.

“Given what Norwich did in the first half and we did in the second, perhaps a draw is a fair result.”

Wes Hoolahan gave the Canaries the lead on the half hour mark, sweeping home after Hugo Lloris had spilled the ball.

But, Tottenham’s second-half pressure eventually paid off, as Gareth Bale slotted home a fine equaliser late on.

The result leaves the Londoners in fourth spot, with Everton closing the gap by two points after beating West Brom

West Ham Survival will save Allardyce’s job

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce is confident that Premier League survival will help him maintain his job at Upton Park.

The former Bolton and Blackburn boss’ future has been called into question in recent weeks, with speculation mounting that the Hammers may look to place a new man at the helm of the club this summer.

But, Allardyce, who guided the Londoners back into the top flight, has played down talk that he could be moving on during the off-season, insisting that maintaining Premier League status will keep him in charge at West Ham:

“Staying in the Premier League is everything about my future – that is all I have had to say over the last few weeks.” He is quoted by Sky Sports.

He went on to claim that he is still happy to be in East London, and is enjoying life back in the Premier League:

“It is where I want to be and where I want to apply my skills because I like the euphoria, excitement and pressure that it brings.

“It is the best league in the world and the most entertaining, so plying your trade in it is what you want to do.”

A number of candidates have been linked Allardyce’s position, including former club icon Paolo di Canio.

Arsenal keen on re-signing Barcelona ace

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger is considering a summer move to bring Alex Song back to the Emirates Stadium, according to reports from The Express.

The Cameroonian international left the Premier League side last summer to move to Spain in a £15m deal.

However, things haven’t quite worked out for the 25-year-old, as he has struggled to force his way into Barca’s star-studded starting XI on a regular basis.

His on-field woes even led to the midfielder being named as the second worst signing in the whole of La Liga during 2012 by Marca, with only Real Madrid’s Luka Modric deemed to have been less of a success.

Reports suggest that Barcelona are willing to allow Song to leave this summer, alerting Wenger who is keen to add some strength and depth to his midfield.

The Frenchman is said to be keen to bring back his former player, who was one of Arsenal’s star performers last term

A fee of around £12m is thought to be enough to tempt the Catalan giants to cut their losses, a figure the Gunners could reach with Wenger expected to be handed around £70m to spend this summer.

Paris Saint-Germain are also interested, but Song may be tempted to return to north London.
