Shafali, Reddy and other players who could take the WPL route to Indian team

WPL could allow these players to regain their spots, or enter India’s white-ball set-up in a home ODI World Cup year

S Sudarshanan10-Feb-2025Shafali Verma (Delhi Capitals)Shafali returned to domestic cricket after being dropped by India last November. She was the leading run-getter in the Senior Women’s One Day Trophy (527 runs, 152.31 strike rate, 75.29 average) and the Senior Women’s One Day Challenger Trophy (414 runs, 145.26 strike rate, 82.80 average). Few batters can attack the ball at the top of the order like Shafali does, and at DC, she has forged a successful opening partnership with Meg Lanning. Consistently with the bat could help Shafali seal an India comeback with a tour of England in July and then for the ODI World Cup at home to come.”To be honest, the past few months have been tough for me,” she said in a DC media release. “My father suffered a heart attack, and just a couple of days later, I was dropped from the ODI squad. I’ve realised that my job is to score runs whenever I get the opportunity, and that’s where I want to focus. The only thing in my control is my preparation. If I train well and score runs, I know I can come back stronger.”Related

WPL 2025 FAQs: Fixtures, players to watch, injury updates, and everything else

Arundhati Reddy (Delhi Capitals)Reddy was dropped from the India side despite making decent returns. She bagged seven wickets at the T20 World Cup last year, the joint-most for India. Then she played just one match on India’s dismal tour of Australia, where she picked up 4 for 26 in Perth although India lost the ODIs 3-0. It was Reddy’s WPL 2024 show with the ball for DC that had enabled her to make a national comeback. She can move the ball both ways and has the ability to bowl a mean yorker. A return to familiar comforts of the WPL could help. With Pooja Vastrakar under an injury cloud, India could use a seam-bowling allrounder like Reddy in the side.Kashvee Gautam (Gujarat Giants)Gautam had first made headlines when she picked up ten wickets in an innings, including a hat-trick, for Chandigarh in an Under-19 one-dayer in 2020. Then, in December 2023, she was selected by GG for a record INR 2 crore at the auction. But an injury had ruled her out of WPL 2024. Gautam made a successful comeback in the domestic one-dayers earlier this season. A fast-bowling-allrounder, she can hit the deck hard and bowl at high speeds, a quality which India seemed to lack in the ODIs in Australia as well as in a few home games last season.During the 2024-25 domestic season, Saika Ishaque worked on her fitness and fielding skills•BCCISaika Ishaque (Mumbai Indians)Since the last ODI World Cup in 2022, India have tried six left-arm spinners, with none being able to cement their spots. While a good show with the ball for DC in WPL 2023 – ten wickets in nine matches, third-most for them – allowed Radha Yadav to make a comeback, a similar showing from Ishaque could help her add to her four international caps.During the 2024-25 domestic season, Ishaque worked on her fitness and fielding skills while captaining Bengal to a runners-up finish in both white-ball domestic competitions. She also returned 17 wickets in the one-dayers, and 13 wickets in the T20s, both the most for Bengal.Raghvi Bist (Royal Challengers Bengaluru)A hard-hitting middle-order batter who bowls seam, Bist could well force herself into the reckoning for the World Cup if she has a memorable maiden season in the WPL. Bist has been vocal about her love for hitting sixes and helped Uttarakhand make the final of both the domestic T20s and the one-dayers in 2023-24. In 2024-25, along with Nandini Kashyap, who will play for DC, Bist helped Uttarakhand to the quarter-final of the T20 competition. There she scored 158 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 129.50, and hit five sixes. Bist even bowls medium pace with a wrong-footed action.Injuries haven’t helped Yastika Bhatia’s cause•Getty ImagesYastika Bhatia (Mumbai Indians)The presence of a big-hitting finisher like Richa Ghosh may provide little or no scope for another wicketkeeper-batter in India’s XI, but injuries haven’t helped Bhatia’s cause either. She played the three ODIs against New Zealand at home last October, but injured her wrist during her maiden WBBL stint afterwards, causing her to miss the tour of Australia.Bhatia was not picked for the subsequent home series against West Indies and Ireland though she was fit, and was part of the Senior Women’s One Day Challenger Trophy instead. Harleen Deol is the incumbent No. 3 for India, but Bhatia’s ability to get off to quick starts could help her case. Bhatia’s road to reclaiming her spot in the national side, at least as a back-up wicketkeeper, could pass through WPL 2025, where she will face some of the world’s best bowlers while opening the batting for MI.

Does Suryakumar Yadav hold the record for being out off the first ball most times in an ODI series?

And was the match aggregate of 517 by South Africa and West Indies a record for a T20I?

Steven Lynch28-Mar-2023Was the match aggregate by South Africa and West Indies the other day a record for a T20I? asked Mason McKillop from South Africa

The match aggregate of 517 runs between West Indies (258 for 5) and South Africa (259 for 4) in Centurion at the weekend was not just a record for a T20I – it beat the 489 of West Indies (245 for 6) and India (244 for 4) in Lauderhill (USA) in 2016 – but also a record for any senior T20 match. The previous mark had been set only a fortnight earlier, with an aggregate of 515 in the PSL game between Multan Sultans (262 for 3) and Quetta Gladiators (253 for 8) in Rawalpindi. The only other T20 match to produce more than 500 runs was a CSA T20 clash between Titans (271 for 3) and Knights (230 for 9) in Potchefstroom in South Africa in October 2022.Suryakumar Yadav was dismissed first ball three times in the ODIs against Australia. Has anyone done this before? asked Dinesh Manraj from Trinidad & Tobago (among others)

Suryakumar Yadav’s nightmare in the one-day series against Australia – first-ball ducks in Mumbai (lbw to Mitchell Starc), in Visakhapatnam (lbw Starc again) and in Chennai (bowled by Ashton Agar) – was the first time such a hat-trick had occurred in a bilateral one-day series. There had been four previous cases of a batter collecting three successive golden ducks, involving different opposition: by the Sri Lankans Pramodya Wickramasinghe (1998) and Lasith Malinga (2009), Kenya’s Shem Ngoche during the 2011 World Cup, and Hamza Tahir of Scotland in 2022. Malinga had another run of three innings in 2013 in which he was out first ball twice and also run out without facing. Was Ashley Chandrasinghe’s 46 in the Sheffield Shield final the lowest score by someone carrying their bat in a first-class match? asked Arsiwala Husein from India

The Victorian opener Ashley Chandrasinghe carried his bat for 46 in their first innings of 195 in last week’s Sheffield Shield final in Perth. This is a long way from the lowest score by someone carrying their bat: playing for the Gentlemen of Kent against the Gentlemen of England in Canterbury in 1852, John Fagge made only 4 of a total of 90. Thirty years later, Lancashire’s Dick Barlow (a serial bat-carrier; he did it ten times in all, four in 1882 alone) was undefeated with 5 in a total of 69 against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge. The previous lowest by an Australian was Alec Bannerman’s 7 (out of 60) for the tourists against Kent, also in Canterbury, in 1893. The lowest in Australia remains 21, by John Rees, in what turned out to be his only first-class match, for South Australia (who made 54) against Western Australia in Perth in 1905-06.Chandrasinghe batted throughout the first day’s play in last week’s final, finishing it with 46 of Victoria’s 90-over total of 194 for 8 (they added only one more run next morning); several people asked whether this was also a record low. This is a tough one to work out as we don’t always know whether a day’s play was uninterrupted, but the lowest score yet unearthed by someone who batted through an entire day’s play appears to be 37 not out, by Hashim Amla as Surrey held out for a draw after following on against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl in July 2021. Surrey faced 96.2 overs on that fourth day, finishing with 122 for 8 from 104.5 overs; Amla, who was 0 not out overnight, faced 278 balls in all, and hit five fours.Fawad Alam is the only batter with five Test hundreds in five different countries•Associated PressI noticed that Fawad Alam has scored five Test centuries, all against different countries (and all in different countries). Is this a record? asked Michael Murdoch from Scotland

Fawad Alam’s five Test centuries have come against Sri Lanka (168 on debut in Colombo in 2009), New Zealand (102 in Mount Maunganui in 2020-21), South Africa (109 in Karachi in 2020-21), Zimbabwe (140 in Harare in 2020-21), and West Indies (124 not out in Kingston in August 2021).Neil McKenzie of South Africa and India’s Wasim Jaffer also scored five Test centuries against five different opponents. But another South African, Quinton de Kock, leads the way with six: during his 54-Test career, he made hundreds against England, Australia, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, India and West Indies. But three of de Kock’s centuries came in South Africa; Fawad is the only man to make five in five different countries. Can you solve an argument? Did Jos Buttler score the most runs in any IPL season last year? asked Narendra Kotak from India

Jos Buttler did lead the way in last year’s IPL with 863 runs for Rajasthan Royals – but it wasn’t quite the record aggregate, as Virat Kohli piled up 973 for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2016. Next comes David Warner, with 848 for Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016. Both Buttler and Kohli hit four hundreds; no one else has scored more than two in an IPL season.Shiva Jayaraman of ESPNcricinfo’s stats team helped with some of the above answers.Use our feedback form, or the Ask Steven Facebook page to ask your stats and trivia questions

All the numbers from one of the worst batting days in India’s Test history

Sampath Bandarupalli25-Aug-20213 – India’s total of 78, in the first innings of the Headingley Test on Wednesday, was their third-lowest first-innings total ever. The poorest was 75 against West Indies in 1987, followed by 76 against South Africa in 2008, both coming in the first innings after they elected to bat.2 – India’s total was the second-lowest first-innings total by any team since electing to bat first since 2011. New Zealand managed just 45 against South Africa in 2013 after choosing to bat in Cape Town.2 – It was also the second-lowest first-innings total after opting to bat against England in the last 50 years, behind Pakistan’s 72 all out in Birmingham in 2010.22 – Runs added by India for the last six partnerships, the fifth-lowest by them in a Test innings. Their lowest was 11 runs, against Australia in the first innings of the Pune Test in 2017.2 – Number of times India have had a lower innings total against England than Wednesday’s 78. India scored only 42 in their second innings of the 1974 Lord’s Test, and were all out for 58 at Old Trafford in 1952.5 – Jos Buttler was the catcher in each of the first five wickets in the Indian innings. It was only the second instance where the same fielder has been involved (as catcher or stumper) in the first five wickets in a Test innings. Brad Haddin was the first, also against India in 2014 in Brisbane.19 – Rohit Sharma was India’s top scorer in the first innings with 19. Only three times has the highest individual score for India in a Test innings been lower than that (where ten wickets have fallen).120* The opening partnership between Rory Burns and Haseeb Hameed is England’s highest for the first wicket in Tests since the 180-run stand between Alastair Cook and Hameed against India in 2016. It is also the first-century opening stand for England at home against India since Cook added 186 with Andrew Strauss in 2011 in Birmingham.2 Previous instances of a team batting second ending the first day of a Test match with a first-innings lead, without losing a wicket. New Zealand took a 56-run lead on day one in the 2001 Hamilton Test against Pakistan, while England went 59 runs ahead of Australia on Boxing Day in 2010.

Thomas Frank makes Xavi Simons training claim as reason for Tottenham snubs revealed

Tottenham manager Thomas Frank has offered his thoughts on Xavi Simons and his performances in training, while addressing the decision to bench him in Spurs’ last four matches.

Thomas Frank set for Brentford reunion amid poor Spurs run

Spurs welcome Brentford to north London on Saturday, desperately needing to end a dismal run that has seen them plummet to 11th in the Premier League table with just 19 points from 14 games.

Frank’s side approach this clash winless in their last five league outings, including three defeats.

Cristian Romero’s dramatic late overhead kick salvaged a 2-2 draw against Newcastle United in their last match, with a controversial VAR penalty to Newcastle denying them all three points.

Their home form has completely collapsed too, with the club now going six consecutive league matches at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium without a single victory.

That shocking run includes 10 home defeats throughout the entire calendar year of 2025, matching the club’s worst-ever records for home losses in a single year.

Most concerning was their last appearance on home soil, where Fulham raced into a two-goal lead within the opening six minutes before securing a 2-1 victory.

The final whistle brought a cacophony of boos ringing around the stadium, aimed squarely at Frank and his struggling squad.

The ghosts of their 4-1 capitulation at Arsenal last month continue to haunt the team. During that humbling derby defeat, Tottenham managed an expected goals figure of just 0.07, one of their lowest outputs this season, highlighting their serious lack of creativity which has become a concern.

Injury problems compound Frank’s difficulties.

Player reveals Daniel Levy blocked his dream transfer to Chelsea from Tottenham

The ex-Lilywhites chairman held him hostage.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 4, 2025

Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski remain sidelined, robbing Spurs of crucial attacking impetus, with James Maddison not expected back until the new year. Meanwhile, Yves Bissouma also has no set return date yet.

The Lilywhites really need Simons to step up right now after his marquee £55 million move from RB Leipzig, but the Dutchman has scarcely been given a chance lately.

Simons’ highlights in a Spurs jersey are few and far between, with the ex-PSG sensation putting in a Player of the Match display against FC Copenhagen in the Champions League and notching an assist against West Ham way back in September.

That is, however, the sum of his contribution this season, with the ex-Eredivisie starlet attracting criticism.

Thomas Frank makes Xavi Simons training claim in response to Tottenham snubs

Simons could end up costing the club £125 million when factoring in wages, agent’s fees and other add-ons over a potential seven-year contract, but to be fair to him, it’s hard to justify that price with limited game time.

Speaking in his latest press conference, Frank addressed why he hasn’t been starting for Simons for Tottenham lately — claiming it is down to a matter of form with alternatives and different personnel for contrasting matches.

The Dane also shared how Simons has been impressing in Tottenham training lately, so it is absolutely not a question of work ethic.

With the pressure on Simons to perform, Saturday sets the perfect stage, and he could become a hero by helping to arrest the club’s barren home form through a convincing display against Frank’s former club.

Everton enter race to sign £88m South American "machine" with Newcastle

In search of an attacking spark, Everton have now reportedly joined Newcastle United in the race to sign young Brazilian star Allan Elias from Palmeiras in 2026.

The Toffees have endured an inconsistent season so far, but entered the international break off the back of a routine 2-0 victory over Fulham. For the most part, David Moyes’ side have shown potential, albeit without blowing teams away.

It must be said, however, that their weakness has been clear since the beginning of the campaign. Everton just can’t get their strikers going on the goal front. After making Thierno Barry one of their most expensive signings, those in Merseyside would have at least expected a goal or two by now. So far, though, he’s yet to find the back of the net.

Meanwhile, Beto is also struggling. The towering forward showed glimpses of promise last season – especially under Moyes – but has so far scored just two goals in 13 games in all competitions.

The Friedkin Group are seemingly running out of patience with their strikers, too. Recent reports have claimed that Everton are interested in adding to their attack in the January transfer window, with Joshua Zirkzee and Daizen Maeda both linked.

The latter would be a particularly impressive signing, given that he scored 33 goals for Celtic at his best last season. Now apparrently keen to leave the Scottish club, Everton could reportedly land a deal for just £15m.

Everton officials scout Ireland star who shocked Cristiano Ronaldo

He could solve their striker problem.

ByTom Cunningham Nov 14, 2025

Alas, the Japan international isn’t the only attacking spark on the Toffees’ shortlist, and they could also make some improvements to those providing the service for Beto and Barry. Fresh headlines in Brazil have suggested that those at the Hill Dickinson Stadium now want a South American gem.

Everton join race to sign Allan Elias

According to reports in Brazil, via Sport Witness, Everton have now joined the race to sign Allan ahead of Newcastle. The 21-year-old has impressed for Palmeiras, assisting eight goals in the current campaign, and could yet ignite Moyes’ frontline.

For many, Allan will be an unknown talent, but it’s worth noting the impressive performances that he enjoyed from the bench at last summer’s Club World Cup. Squaring off against the likes of Chelsea and Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami, the young Brazilian more than held his own.

The 21-year-old has also earned plenty of praise during his time at Palmeiras, with manager Abel Ferreira telling reporters: “It’s difficult to leave names like Veiga, Mauricio and Murilo out, but Allan comes in and gives a great dynamic. A machine.”

Claims that Palmeiras have inserted a release clause worth as much as €100m (£88m) in Allan’s contract shows just how highly they rate him and that could provide a problem for Everton.

As much as Friedkin were willing to spend big last summer, they mainly spent on proven European talent rather than gambling on the unknown. At this stage, it seems unlikely that the Toffees would spend £88m on Allan.

"Oh my god", "Sackable" – Carragher rips into Liverpool star in behind-scenes footage

Jamie Carragher criticised a struggling Liverpool star as the Reds were dealt another humiliating defeat at Anfield, this time at the hands of PSV Eindhoven.

Curtis Jones admits he's out of "answers" after Liverpool defeat

Where do Liverpool go from here? This is no longer a blip. The Premier League champions are in a full-blown crisis that not even Anfield could protect them from against Nottingham Forest and PSV. Their crown has been ripped from their head in ruthless fashion and serious questions are being asked of manager Arne Slot.

Curtis Jones looked a man defeated at full-time, as he admitted that he doesn’t have the “answers” to Liverpool’s current form, which has seen them lose nine of their last 12 games in all competitions.

The academy graduate told reporters: “I don’t have the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody. It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even have to wait to think about it. I’m past being angry inside.

“I’m at the point now where I just don’t have the words. It’s hard because I’m playing for the team I support. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen this club all my life. In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Liverpool team going through a period like this with results like these.

Look away now, Arne Slot…

ByTom Cunningham Nov 25, 2025

“But at the end of the day, we still have that badge on our chest. And until that badge is gone, we’re always going to fight. We’re going to try and get this team back to where it needs to be, show everyone again what this club is about and why people call it the best team in the world. But right now, we’re in the s***, and it needs to change.”

Carragher also didn’t hold back behind the scenes on CBS, ripping into Ibrahima Konate after the Frenchman endured another disastrous outing at Anfield.

Carragher rips into Konate after "sackable" PSV performance

Caught on camera watching the game behind the scenes on punditry duty for CBS, Carragher slammed Konate and claimed that it was a “sackable offence” for Slot to start the struggling defender against PSV.

Konate, who is out of contract in the summer, has been one of the most disappointing players in Liverpool’s recent run and continued his struggles against PSV – missing his interception for their third goal.

Once again, he found himself hooked in the second-half as Slot desperately attempted to turn the game around. By the time that the defender departed the game in the 76th minute, Konate had made just three tackles and won zero aerial duels on another evening to forget.

It’s a timely reminder that, despite breaking their transfer record twice in the summer, Liverpool made a major mistake when they missed out on Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Cameras Caught Scary Moment After Pete Alonso Hit in Face by Baseball

Pete Alonso is continuing his ride with the New York Mets after signing a two-year, $54 million extension that will keep him anchoring first base and the heart of the order. He'll be paramount to the Mets' success as they hope to build on a run that took them to the National League Championship Series last season. So it was a major reason for concern when Alonso suffered an injury during practice on Thursday.

SNY cameras caught the aftermath of Alonso taking a ball to the face during drills.

Thankfully for player and organization, Alonso was able to get back on his feet relatively quickly and leave the field on his own power. He returned to the field later to continue the club's preseason work.

Alonso has been an iron man since breaking through with New York in 2019, missing only 24 regular season games. In 2024 he suited up for all 162 regular season and 13 playoff contests.

The first baseman has made four All-Star trips during his six Major League Baseball seasons and coming off a year in which he blasted 34 home runs.

Rehan, Hill, Handscomb turn the tables for Leicestershire

Table-toppers bounce back from 0 for 2 to post formidable first-day total against Derbyshire

Leicestershire 357 for 3 (Hill 132*, Rehan 115, Handscomb 99*) vs Derbyshire Leicestershire displayed the quality and character of promotion contenders to stage an impressive fightback on the opening day of the Rothesay County Championship match against rivals Derbyshire at the Central Co-op County Ground. The Division Two leaders recovered from 0 for 2 to close on 357 for 3 with England all-rounder Rehan Ahmed and Lewis Hill scoring centuries.Ahmed’s 115 was his third consecutive hundred in the championship and his fourth of the season while Hill and skipper Peter Handscomb celebrated personal milestones.Hill marked his 100th first-class appearance with an unbeaten 132 and shared an unbroken fourth wicket stand of 188 with Handscomb who was not out 99 in his 200th red-ball game.Hill also added 169 with Ahmed which turned the tide after Luis Reece and Blair Tickner made such an encouraging start for the hosts before Leicestershire took control. The pitch had been used for three T20 matches which would have influenced Leicestershire’s decision to bat but that looked questionable when both openers were dismissed in the space of six balls.Cloud cover hinted at assistance for the seam bowlers and Reece found enough away movement with the third ball of the day to have Rishi Patel caught behind. When Tickner straightened his second ball to bowl Sol Budinger, the morning was threatening to go badly wrong for the leaders but Ahmed and Hill counter-attacked to dominate the rest of the session.Ahmed scored his maiden century at Derby three seasons ago and he quickly imposed himself on the bowlers to relieve the pressure. When Derbyshire turned to spin in the 15th over, he came down the pitch to dispatch Jack Morley for six before reaching his 50 from 54 balls in the next over.Hill’s role was less eyecatching but just as valuable and by lunch the pair had transformed Leicestershire’s fortunes at 118 for 2.Ahmed quickly closed in on his hundred, reverse sweeping Alex Thomson for his 13th four to move to 99 and then squeezing a single past gully to reach three figures from 118 balls.Hill completed his 50 before Ahmed whipped Zak Chappell in the air to deep mid-wicket where Caleb Jewell took a fine catch on the run.The rest of the afternoon belonged to Hill and Handscomb who accumulated steadily against bowling that lacked the consistency to put them under pressure. The pattern was repeated after tea with Handscomb reaching 50 off 84 balls three overs before Hill raised his bat to celebrate the 9th first-class hundred of his career which had come from 194 balls. Not surprisingly, Derbyshire claimed the second new ball as soon as it became available but although Reece beat the bat several times, could not make the breakthrough as Hill and Handscomb put their side in a commanding position.
