Cavenagh reveals reasoning behind Thelwell's Rangers exit

Thelwell’s exit looked on the cards as soon as he appointed Russell Martin. The sporting director instantly failed to win the fans over after a disastrous summer of decisions and has now paid the price alongside chief executive Patrick Stewart.

Revealing the news, chairman Andrew Cavenagh said: “Paraag and I have analysed the club’s needs, and as we reflect on what the club needs today, and where Kevin and Patrick are, we think we need something different.

“Our focus the first part of this season, the first part of our ownership period, has been on the sporting side and that’s where all of our attention went to for obvious reasons.

“With Danny coming in, he has started to improve the on-pitch performance, and that has created the space to allow Paraag and I to look at other parts of the club with new eyes and assess what we need going forward.”

It’s a major decision from the 49ers, who have seen Rangers get back on track on the pitch since Danny Rohl’s arrival. Carlos Forbs reveals "one conversation" before Rangers rejection

Speaking to Belgian newspaper Het Belang van Limburg, Forbs revealed why he rejected Rangers and Thelwell in favour of a move to Club Brugge in the summer.

The former Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee had quite the decision to make in the summer and Thelwell just couldn’t lure him to Rangers in what was a sign of things to come.

Since then, the now-former sporting director failed to get deals over the line to hire the likes of Steven Gerrard, before finally turning to Rohl. From appointing Martin, to missing out on Forbs and then Gerrard, the clock was always ticking on Thelwell’s time in Scotland.

Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has returned to India’s Test squad for the two-match series against South Africa beginning on November 14 in Kolkata.Pant replaced N Jagadeesan while Akash Deep took Prasidh Krishna’s spot in the squad that beat West Indies 2-0 in October. Pant had missed that series as he was recovering from the foot fracture he suffered during the fourth Test against England in Manchester in July. Akash Deep was recovering from a back injury that had kept him out of the Duleep Trophy after his return from England; he has since played two rounds of the Ranji Trophy for Bengal. Mohammed Shami, who has played the first three rounds of the Ranji Trophy for Bengal and taken 15 wickets, was not picked.Pant proved his match fitness by captaining India A to victory in the first four-day game against South Africa A at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru last week. The defender immediately signalled discomfort and was unable to continue, with Jurrien Timber entering as his replacement to partner Piero Hincapie in central defence.

Arsenal’s defensive problems have now intensified with both regular starters William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes already sidelined through injury, leaving Arteta with severely limited options at the back during a congested festive fixture schedule.

That being said, the good news is that Saliba is expected to be back in a ‘matter of days’, according to Arteta in his pre-Brentford press conference.

If the Frenchman is fit and available for Villa, Arsenal will have little choice but to thrust Saliba right back into the starting eleven to partner Hincapie, with Gabriel still weeks away from returning.

Declan Rice praises Cristhian Mosquera amid Arsenal injury scare

Speaking to Sky Sports before Arsenal’s win over Brentford, Rice explained exactly why the Spaniard could end up being a sore miss — especially with Saliba currently absent and a doubt for this weekend.

The England international, who has been their arguable player of the season so far, told Sky that Mosquera is an “incredible” player with “immense” qualities alongside Hincapie.

This high praise comes as further evidence of what many already know — Mosquera has proved to be one of the bargains of the summer.

Signed for just £13 million from Valencia, the 21-year-old has done exactly what has been required of him whilst barely ever faltering.

Mosquera was handed his Premier League debut in a testing 1-0 defeat at Anfield in August, the club’s last defeat in all competitions, and he performed admirably at a very difficult ground after replacing the injured Saliba.

The youngster has attracted major praise whenever he’s been asked to fill in for one of Arsenal’s first choice pairing, with Martin Keown claiming that Mosquera has ‘the same DNA’ as both Saliba and Gabriel.

Arsenal will now be praying that his development isn’t stifled by a serious long-term injury, and the club are reportedly convinced that Mosquera could become one of the best centre-backs in world football.

وسُئل سلوت عن محمد صلاح الذي تواجد على مقاعد البدلاء للمرة الثانية على التوالي، وشارك كبديل أمام سندرلاند، وإذا كان يحاول إيجاد الفريق المناسب للخصم المناسب فيما هو قادم.

وأكد سلوت: “الأمر لا علاقة له بمحمد صلاح أو بأي شخص آخر، لم أفكر بعد في كيفية لعبنا ضد ليدز بالمباراة المقبلة، لديّ فكرة عن التشكيل الذي سيبدأ المباراة، لكنني لن أفصح عنها”.

وفيما يخص استبدال جاكبو بـ محمد صلاح بين الشوطين، أوضح: “عانى كودي للسيطرة على المواجهات الفردية. إذا أردت الحصول على أي فرصة ضدهم، تحتاج إلى لحظة سحرية من لاعب أو ركلة ثابتة للتسجيل، شعرت في الشوط الأول أن كودي عانى لإيجاد تلك اللحظة لأنه كان من الصعب عليه السيطرة على المواجهات الفردية أو إرسال الكرات العرضية”.

واستدرك: “في الشوط الأول، لعبنا بـ سوبوسلاي على اليمين لنكون أقوياء دفاعيًا بما يكفي لعدم استقبال الكثير من الأهداف كما حدث في الأسابيع القليلة الماضي، بدلته بـ محمد صلاح على الجانب الأيمن، ثم لعبت بـ فلوريان فيرتز على اليسار، كما ذكرت، بالكاد استقبلنا أهدافًا، لكن كان من الصعب طوال المباراة خلق تلك اللحظة السحرية، كان لدينا ما يكفي، خاصة في نهاية الشوط الثاني، لكننا لم نسجل”.

وأستطرد: “في كثير من الأحيان هذا الموسم، لا نمنح المنافسين عددًا كبيرًا من الفرص، باستثناء تلك التي تُسجَّل منها الأهداف، لم يحالفنا التوفيق في تحقيق الانتصارات، لكن في الأسابيع الأخيرة كنا سنخسر مثل هذه المباراة، وهذا تطور إيجابي”.
