Labuschagne's batting mentor: 'Every batter goes through this'

Neil D’Costa says Marnus Labuschagne has to keep trusting himself as he tries to rediscover his Test form

Andrew McGlashan26-Nov-20242:10

Manjrekar: Bumrah’s contributions ‘unreal’ in all three formats

Marnus Labuschagne’s long-time batting mentor has cautioned him against over-training ahead of the second Test in Adelaide and be less rigid in his gameplan as he attempts to emerge from what is the most serious batting slump since he became an international cricketer. While collectively Australia’s top order is underperforming, Labuschagne is the one squarely in the spotlight after two ugly innings at Optus Stadium. On the first day he laboured to 2 off 52 balls before missing a straight delivery from Mohammed Siraj and on the third evening left a delivery from Jasprit Bumrah that would have smashed the stumps.Related

Labuschagne faces vital week as Australia resist panic changes

The twin failures left Labuschagne with 123 runs from his last 10 innings of which 90 came in one knock against New Zealand in March. Overall this year he is averaging 24.50 in Tests to follow a 2023 where that figure was 34.91 having been above 60 in three of the previous four years.Labuschagne was already back in the nets while the opening Test drew a conclusion in Perth on Monday and was expected to train individually before the squad links back up a day earlier than planned in Adelaide.”I’d probably just half what he usually does. Just try and clear it up a bit,” Neil D’Costa told ESPNcricinfo. “Keep working on reacting more, not having such rigid plans. Every batter goes through this. Almost everyone around 30 years old – I don’t know why it’s that number – seems to have this glitch. He’s a guy we all know, he loves playing cricket. He never leaves a stone unturned. He’s super fit. Does he overthink things? I don’t know, possibly everyone does.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“When someone gets to the stage where they are the No. 1 player in the world, they are going to become a target. He couldn’t keep going. He’d be averaging 80. At some stage, I don’t want to say it had to happen…it happens to a lot of players. They try a bit too hard and like [Virat] Kohli you have to keep trusting yourself, trusting your processes, trust what you do. Go back and find a way the next day.”Labuschagne’s lack of positivity at the crease came under significant focus after his first innings. “The manner that he’s been playing, for me it’s such a negative mindset, and he has been for a little while,” Aaron Finch said on . “What that does, when you’re coming up against great attacks – Jasprit Bumrah is as good as we’ve ever seen, Siraj a very good fast bowler – it just allows them to settle in, you’re not putting much pressure on them, so their margin for error becomes huge.”D’Costa, who has already spoken with Labuschagne since the Test, believed he was within his rights to think he could leave the delivery from Bumrah. “That ball was 8.3 metres [from the stumps], that’s going over the stumps all day, every day,” he said. “It just hit the top of the stumps. With a millisecond to make a decision, he saw the length and let it go and it skidded. Are we going to lose sleep over that? I’m not. Would you like him to score runs, absolutely.”Marnus Labuschagne left a lot of balls in the first innings…and fell leaving one in the second•Associated Press

Labuschagne’s two lbw dismissals in Perth come amid a period where a tendency to be caught playing away from his body had crept into his game which D’Costa partly attributes to him working on his white-ball batting.”If you look at how he plays, he lets a lot of balls go. He always has,” he said. “Think maybe he was working really hard at being a one-day player so for a little while he lost that. And he started nicking. Let me tell you, they [India] bowled so well. They knew exactly he wanted that ball on leg stump. They did not bowl there. If anything, they bowled wide. This team is really well prepared. They executed very well.”After the defeat, captain Pat Cummins acknowledged Labuschagne’s difficulties would be a focal point in the days ahead.”Marn, along with quite a few guys in the team, didn’t have the week we would have wanted,” he said. “It’s no secret how hard the batters, particularly Marn, works in the nets. He’s always trying to find those small marginal gains. This week will be a lot of conversation with the coaches around his approach and what he could be doing differently.”

Bad news for Ndoye: Nottingham Forest "pushing" to sign "exciting" £35m gem

It feels like a lifetime ago now since Morgan Gibbs-White was being tipped to desert Nottingham Forest.

Indeed, at one point in the frantic transfer window, it looked nailed on that the exciting number ten was going to leave the City Ground behind, with Tottenham Hotspur his most likely next destination.

Thankfully, a switch to North London never got off the ground, with Gibbs-White starting both top-flight games so far for Forest this season, as they remain unbeaten, slotting back into Premier League life.

Dan Ndoye has been stealing various plaudits, too, by picking up a goal and an assist across this positive start, with Nuno Espirito Santo hopeful he can add in more impressive recruits, such as the ex-Bologna man, before the window suddenly slams shut.

Forest pushing to sign £35m star

The Tricky Trees have suddenly sparked into life in the busy transfer market.

Both Omari Hutchinson and James McAtee have entered the building from Ipswich Town and Manchester City in quick succession, costing Nuno’s men a whopping £67.5m in the process.

With Ndoye also in through the door, Forest’s forward line is undoubtedly littered with some top-quality up-and-coming gems, with a new £35m target also on their radar to add in even more firepower.

Journalist John Percy has taken to X to confirm that Forest are “pushing” to try and snap up RC Strasbourg attacking menace Dilane Bakwa before the window is over, having previously been reported to have had a bid in the region of £30m turned down.

£35m might well be enough for a move to come back to life, as per Percy, with the purchase of Bakwa potentially being troubling news for Ndoye, who will want his position as the Tricky Trees’ starting right winger to be as solid as possible, even if competition soon arrives.

How Bakwa compares to Ndoye

Of course, Forest did wave goodbye to Anthony Elanga this summer, meaning they were left a tad light in the right-winger department.

That has since been fixed with Ndoye’s arrival onto the scene, but Bakwa’s stunning numbers in Ligue 1 to date indicate he could be somewhat of an immediate upgrade on Forest’s brand new, flashy £34m signing.

When glancing at the table above, it’s clear that Bakwa is more of a creative force than Ndoye, which further makes him more alike to the departed Elanga, who registered a hefty 21 assists for Forest from his 81 games at the club, before Newcastle United turned his head.

The Strasbourg star has collected 17 assists for himself in the testing French top-flight, with his ex-Bologna counterpart only managing six in total from 62 Serie A clashes.

With the same number of goals next to his name, too, as his potential soon-to-be City Ground comrade, it isn’t out of the question to assume that Bakwa would make similar immediate strides in the Premier League, like Ndoye, having also been labelled “very exciting” for his consistent excellence in France by journalist Josh Bunting.

Bakwa does look well-equipped to take on this next leap – having already collected two assists this season for Liam Rosenior’s early Ligue 1 high-flyers – but it will all rest on whether Nuno can get all these stunning attackers into the same XI.

Based on the evidence outlined, the 23-year-old might well feel hard done by if he isn’t immediately placed into the side at the expense of Ndoye, as some intriguing selection headaches now potentially arrive at the Portuguese manager’s door.

Requested by Nuno: Nottingham Forest make offer for £6m "big-game" player

The Tricky Trees have tabled a bid for a new signing, with negotiations currently ongoing.

Sisodia and Kamalini lead the way as defending champs India cruise into final

Vaishnavi also shone with the ball, as England lost 6 for 11 in a middle-order collapse against India

A clinical all-round performance from defending champions India in the second semi-final against England secured their entry into the Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup final. In a rematch of the 2023 final, India kept England down to 113 thanks to a dominant show from their spinners. The top order led by G Kamalini, who scored an unbeaten 56, then razed down India’s target with five overs to spare.Related

Van Wyk, Botha outclass Australia as South Africa reach maiden final

The win was set up by India’s three left-arm spinners. Parunika Sisodia got the first two wickets and another late in the innings to finish 3 for 21 and the Player-of-the-Match medal. She was supported by Aayushi Shukla’s spell of 2 for 21, which included the wicket of England’s top-scorer Davina Perrin (45). Vaishnavi Sharma, the tournament’s leading wicket-taker, claimed three wickets in the 16th over to take the wind out of England’s innings. But it was not all rosy for India at the start. A 44-run stand between Perrin and captain Abi Norgrove powered England to 81 for 2 and set the platform for a challenging total. Aayushi’s dismissal of Perrin in the 12th over, though, triggered a collapse that saw England slide from 81 for 2 to 92 for 8. It was only the late resistance in the last four overs from Amu Surenkumar and Tilly Corteen-Coleman, who put on an unbroken 21 for the ninth wicket, that dragged England’s total to 113 for 8.Parunika Sisodia won the Player of the Match award after taking 3 for 21•ICC via Getty Images

England needed early wickets to stay in the game, and that didn’t happen, as the India openers took 44 in the powerplay. Gongadi Trisha (35) and Kamalini maneuvered the gaps expertly in a 60-run partnership in 8.6 overs.Trisha’s dismissal at the hands of Phoebe Brett nearly brought England another wicket, as Norgrove appeared to take a diving catch in the covers with Kamalini on 25, only for the TV umpire to rule that the catch hadn’t been completed cleanly. That decision, followed by wides from Surenkumar and Trudy Johnson that ran away to the boundary, put India in a near-unassailable position, and Kamalini finished the game off with three fours in the 15th over. The second of them brought up her second half-century in as many innings.India now take on South Africa in Sunday’s final in Kuala Lumpur, with both sides going into the title clash undefeated.

Here's a detailed look at Aston Villa's 10 most expensive signings: 10 Lucas Digne £25m from Everton

Lucas-digne-aston-villa

Left-back Lucas Digne moved to Villa Park from Everton in January 2022 under Steven Gerrard, and the Frenchman has gone on to become a regular under Emery.

Despite Emery bringing in Alex Moreno, Digne mainly remained first-choice during the manager’s first full season in charge.

9 Evann Guessand £26m from Nice

Evann Guessand was Villa’s only real marquee signing in the summer of 2025, with the forward costing around £26m from French side Nice.

An Ivory Coast international, Guessand was a man in-demand and can play anywhere across the front line.

8 Diego Carlos £26.8m from Sevilla

Diego Carlos for Aston Villa

Defender Diego Carlos had his injury troubles after signing for Aston Villa.

The Brazilian joined Villa in 2022 and was named vice-captain under Gerrard, before rupturing his Achilles tendon on his home debut. He was sold to Fenerbahce on a permanent deal in 2025.

7 Leon Bailey £30m from Bayer Leverkusen

Aston Villa forward Leon Bailey.

Winger Leon Bailey arrived from Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in 2021, but the Jamaican is another who has had his battles in the treatment room.

Bailey had his best season for Villa in 2023/24, scoring 10 goals and providing nine assists in 35 Premier League games but was sent on loan to Roma in 2025.

6 Ollie Watkins £30m from Brentford

Arguably one of Villa’s best-value signings in the top 10 is striker Ollie Watkins, who arrived at Villa Park from Brentford with no previous Premier League experience.

The forward has starred under numerous different managers, scoring more than 10 Premier League goals in each of his five seasons.

5 Pau Torres £31.5m from Villarreal

Aston Villa central defender Pau Torres.

Centre-back Pau Torres was one of Emery’s top targets in the summer of 2023 after previously working with his compatriot at Villarreal.

NSWE managed to bring Torres to the Midlands, and it is a decision that has paid off so far, with the Spaniard under contract until 2028.

4 Emiliano Buendia £33m from Norwich

Aston Villa won the race to sign Emiliano Buendia from Norwich City in 2021 after the Argentinian’s starring years at Carrow Road, pipping the likes of Arsenal to a deal.

Unfortunately for Buendia, he missed the entirety of the 2023/24 season through injury, but he is under contract until 2026.

3 Ian Maatsen £37.5m from Chelsea

After he starred out on loan with Borussia Dortmund, Aston Villa made the permanent move to sign left-back Ian Maatsen from Chelsea.

Costing around £37.5m, Maatsen signed a six-year deal at the time and is under contract until 2030.

2 Amadou Onana £50m from Everton

Central midfielder Amadou Onana also arrived at Villa Park in 2024 ahead of their Champions League campaign, costing £50m from Everton.

The Belgian was a shining light with the Toffees and is under contract with Villa until 2029.

1 Moussa Diaby £51.9m from Bayer Leverkusen

Moussa Diaby for Aston Villa

Top of the charts and Villa’s record signing is Moussa Diaby, who like Bailey, arrived from Bayer Leverkusen.

The winger quickly became a key player under Emery and helped the club to a top-four finish in 2023/24. However, Diaby then made the move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad, who paid around £50m for the Frenchman.

BAILE DO DEL VALLE

Constrangedora.

FRAGILIDADE DEFENSIVA DO TIMÃO

Only five players have scored more than his 12 ODI centuries and only David Warner has a better average among those five.Smith was an integral part of two ODI World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023. In 2015, he made five consecutive fifty-plus scores including 105 in the semi-final win over India and 56 not out in the final against New Zealand at the MCG, where he also hit the winning runs.He was named in the ICC men’s ODI team of the year in 2015 and was Australia’s ODI player of the year in 2014-15 and 2020-21, the last a year in which he plundered three centuries including back-to-back 62-ball masterclasses at the SCG against India in the space of three days.Smith led Australia in 64 ODIs from 2015 to 2025. Only Ricky Ponting, Allan Border, Steve Waugh, Mark Taylor and Michael Clarke have led Australia on more occasions, although Smith was the only one not to lead his country in a World Cup.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Chair of selectors George Bailey paid tribute to Smith following his retirement.”We fully understand and support Steve’s decision to retire from One Day International cricket,” Bailey said. “Steve has said on many occasions he is approaching the remainder of his playing career on a series-by-series basis, a position which hasn’t changed and one Cricket Australia supports.”His record as a batter across 170 games is exemplary and to leave the format as a two-time World Cup winner cements his legacy as one of the great Australian ODI players. From an NSP [national selection panel] standpoint, Steve remains fully committed to Test cricket and is an integral member of and leader within that team.”New CA chief executive Todd Greenberg acknowledged Smith’s contribution to Australia’s ODI team over a 16-year career. “Congratulations to Steve on an amazing One-Day International career during which he has made a vast contribution to Australia’s performances in the 50-over format.”Australia’s next ODIs are scheduled to be a series against South Africa in August. Smith has committed to play for Welsh Fire in the Hundred at the same time, and his 50-over retirement should enable him to play more franchise cricket as he approaches the end of his career.

Man City on verge of signing £212k-p/w star to replace Guardiola favourite

Manchester City find themselves in a mini-rut after two successive defeats, though could be about to announce a statement signing ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline.

Manchester City suffer problematic defeat at Brighton

Despite being billed as one of the Premier League title favourites, Manchester City have lost back-to-back Premier League matches after falling to a 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Erling Haaland opened the scoring and looked set to send the Citizens on their way to a victory, though a penalty from James Milner and Brajan Gruda’s late strike left Pep Guardiola with much to ponder after a disappointing collapse on the South Coast.

Speaking after the loss, Manchester City star Rodri admitted his side ‘are not at the level’ that they should be and urged newcomers to step up quickly if they have designs on fighting for major silverware.

He told Sky Sports: “Disappointed because we are Manchester City and we come here to win, but this is the reality. We are not at the level for a long, long time.”

“We are missing the level. It is a matter of the team and the changes. New players have to adapt, and of course, when you change the team that much, it is difficult. This is our reality, it is not for excuses and we have to see that this is not the way to achieve things.”

Undoubtedly, the lack of cohesiveness between Manchester City’s defence and goalkeeper James Trafford is one factor behind their shaky nature. £27 million was forked out on the stopper who joined from Burnley, while fan favourite Ederson looks set to depart before the window closes.

Needing a replacement with the wherewithal to become a rock behind Guardiola’s backline, Manchester City could now have found their man with time ticking before tonight’s deadline.

Manchester City set to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma

After weeks of speculation, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed on X that Manchester City are set to seal a deal to sign Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma. Ederson has agreed to join Fenerbahce, the renowned journalist added in his description, and the former AC Milan stopper is set for a medical this afternoon before an official announcement.

Weeks after Pep doubled down on Ederson’s importance to Manchester City, Donnarumma looks set to replace the Citizens’ legend between the sticks, though he hasn’t exactly had a simple journey of his own to get to this point.

Speaking about his situation at Paris Saint-Germain, for whom he kept 17 clean sheets in 47 appearances across all competitions last term, he admitted that he has been somewhat forced out at the Parc des Princes after protracted negotiations to extend his £212,000-a-week deal fell through.

Either way, that all appears to be water under the bridge and Manchester City will land an apt replacement for Ederson who will make a major difference between the sticks.
