Crystal Palace: Matt Woosnam hails Mitchell

Crystal Palace correspondent Matt Woosnam hailed left-back Tyrick Mitchell during the 4-1 win over Watford on Wednesday night.

The Lowdown: Eagles’ first league win of 2022

The Eagles were winless in six Premier League fixtures in 2022 prior to the trip to Vicarage Road.

Patrick Vieira’s side finally claimed three points in the top flight against their former boss Roy Hodgson, with goals from Jean-Philippe Mateta, Conor Gallagher and two from Wilfried Zaha.

The victory takes Palace into 11th place after 26 games, and Woosnam was full of praise for Mitchell.

The Latest: Woosnam praise for Mitchell

The 22-year-old provided an assist for Gallagher to put Palace back into the lead shortly before the interval, and Woosnam took to Twitter to shower the full-back with praise following the goal, labelling Mitchell’s crossing as ‘so good’.

He gushed: “Mitchell’s crossing has been so good this evening. He’s having a good game going forward and when he gets the overlap to put it in Palace look dangerous.”

The Verdict: Impressive

Behind Zaha, Mitchell was staistically Palace’s second-best performer against the Hornets, ending with a 7.6/10 match rating. [SofaScore]

The 22-year-old made four tackles, won 80% of his ground duels, provided an assist and wasn’t dribbled past all night.

It was an impressive display from the youngster, and hopefully Palace can now kick on after securing a long-awaited Premier League victory.

Everton face injury blow ahead of Spurs

Everton will travel to London today to take on Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur side, and will be hoping that they can cause an upset away from home by stealing all three points to put themselves in a safer position in the Premier League table.

Lampard’s side are in desperate need to win some points in their league campaign, as they currently find themselves just one point off the relegation zone, and with the Toffees clash with Spurs the last fixture of the game week, their position in the table has luckily remained unchanged, giving them the opportunity to put a bigger gap between themselves and the drop zone this evening.

With that being said, the ex-Chelsea boss will be hoping his team can rise to the occasion despite a number of inconsistencies and injury concerns, however one player’s absence could be frustrating for the manager ahead of the challenging game.

Ben Godfrey will be unavailable for the Premier League fixture tonight but is expected to be back in training the day after the game, which will surely be gutting for Lampard, who confirmed the availability of the defender in his pre-match press conference on Friday.

“Ben Godfrey won’t make Monday’s match but should be ready to train with us in the middle of next week, which is great.

“We’ve lost two big centre-backs [Godfrey and Yerry Mina] from pretty much the moment I came in.”

The 24-year old-central defender sustained a hamstring tear during the FA Cup victory over Brentford just over a month ago and has been unavailable for selection ever since, but there is no doubt his presence would’ve been a huge boost against Spurs this evening.

Godfrey has been one of the better defenders in the team this season, proving to be reliable in his position time and time again.

He’s made 2.1 tackles and 3.5 clearances on average per game in the Premier League, while winning the majority of his ground duels (60%) and is successful in the majority (70%) of his dribbles according to SofaScore, so there is no doubt his defensive attributes will be missed in the team, especially against the likes of Harry Kane.

The 43-year-old coach will need to work with what he has defensively, however Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Demarai Gray will potentially be returning to the side this evening, so Lampard can focus on freshening up Everton’s attacking threat against Spurs.

West Ham may be without Cresswell

West Ham United boss David Moyes may be without another player for their crunch clash with Liverpool today amid some concerns already surrounding midfielder Tomas Soucek.

The Lowdown: West Ham doubts…

The Hammers will certainly be without a few first teamers for their trip to Anfield this afternoon with Vladimir Coufal, Angelo Ogbonna and Arthur Masuaku apparently still unavailable (The Evening Standard).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-developments-3/” title=”West Ham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

There are also doubts about whether midfielder Soucek can play today despite the player declaring himself ready on Twitter, with Moyes stating to the press afterwards that his stitches are still a ‘concern’.

As per reports, it appears the Irons may be without another player in Aaron Cresswell who was absent through injury during their 3-1 defeat away to Southampton in the FA Cup.

The Latest: Cresswell a doubt…

As per reports from The Evening Standard (at the time of writing) and Claret & Hugh, West Ham ‘may also be without a recognised left-back’ against Liverpool today as Cresswell faces a late fitness push.

The latter insider states that there is uncertainty surrounding whether West Ham’s defender will be fit to face Jurgen Klopp’s side.

The Verdict: Worry for Moyes…

The Englishman, a real threat from out wide, comes as an asset for Moyes in the forward areas and may be sorely missed if he can’t make it back for Liverpool today.

Cresswell has made the joint-second most key passes in the final third for West Ham so far this season all while averaging more crosses per 90 than any Irons player in the Premier League (WhoScored).

Taking these numbers into account, it’s little wonder Paul Robinson believes the 32-year-old is Moyes’ ‘unsung hero’ and an ‘amazing player’ (Football Insider).

Irons supporters will certainly be hoping he is deemed fit enough to feature.

Southampton v Newcastle: Team & injury news

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s Southampton are back in action tonight, desperate to bounce back from their humiliating 4-0 loss away at Aston Villa at the weekend.

Sitting in ninth place in the Premier League table, the Saints could move to within two points of Wolves in eighth, should they earn a victory up against a revitalised Newcastle United side.

At the weekend, Hasenhuttl was without one of his star defenders, while another was left on the bench and replaced ineffectively, but with both available tonight, the Austrian manager is likely to make two changes to his starting line-up.

With that being said, here is how we think Southampton will line-up tonight against Newcastle, as well as the latest team and injury news…

After Hasenhuttl revealed that Mohammed Salisu, who is rated at £9m by Transfermarkt, could be available for selection tonight, we expect him to start as well as Kyle Walker-Peters, with the £25k per week Englishman having his best season in the Premier League so far.

Salisu, who has been described as a “nasty” defender to come up against in a duel by Hasenhuttl, has been missing for a few games now after suffering a hamstring injury, but he was pictured in first-team training at the start of the week, and his manager admitted in the pre-match press conference that there is a chance he could play today.

Meanwhile, Walker-Peters, who has been described as a “role model” by his boss, has filled in well at left-back this season when called upon – and is likely to get the nod over Romain Perraud who had a disastrous game against Villa at the weekend.

Completing the backline will be Fraser Forster in goal, with Jan Bednarek and Tino Livramento the other two defenders.

In midfield, James Ward-Prowse will line up once again with Oriol Romeu, with wingers Stuart Armstrong and Mohamed Elyounoussi retaining their positions in the team.

Che Adams and Armando Broja will likely continue their solid partnership up top, which has conjured up 13 Premier League goals between them.

West Ham have option to re-sign Areola

The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas has shared some fresh West Ham United transfer news involving current loanee Alphonse Areola.

The Lowdown: Areola’s season so far

The Frenchman, who was a part of the World Cup-winning squad in 2018, joined the Hammers on loan last summer. Whilst the loan deal was announced as a single year, the east London club further stated that they have the option of making the deal permanent at the end of the season.

However, the Paris Saint-Germain ‘keeper has struggled for game-time with the Irons, remaining as Lukasz Fabianski’s understudy throughout the course of the Premier League campaign, having made just one appearance in the division this term.

Instead, the 6 foot 5 ‘keeper took the starting spot in the Hammers’ Europa League campaign, where he has put in a number of stunning performances, most recently in West Ham’s sensational 2-0 win over Sevilla last Thursday.

The Latest: Hammers have Areola option

Whilst some Irons fans may have thought that the club might be signing Areola at the end of the season for a reported £11m, some interesting news has emerged which may change this.

Taking to Twitter as he shared a corresponding article from The Athletic’s David Ornstein, he stated: “EXCL: West Ham have the option to re-sign Alphonse Areola on loan for next season. #WHUFC”

The Verdict: Makes financial sense

Keeping Areola in east London on loan for another season would make perfect sense for West Ham. This would free up funds which David Moyes can spend elsewhere, particularly in areas where additions are badly needed, primarily at centre-back and up front.

Whilst the Frenchman has been a fine understudy to Fabianski, he is seven years younger than the Hammers’ number one. Therefore, another loan deal before making the deal permanent should prove to be shrewd business for West Ham in the long-term, especially as Moyes will now know what the 29-year-old can bring to the team.

WBA heading for disaster over Reyes Cleary

West Bromwich Albion have seen numerous players from their youth ranks leave the Midlands club over the past few years such as Tyler Roberts, Finley Thorndike and Tim Iroegbunam among others.

Looking ahead to the upcoming summer transfer window, it seems as though the Baggies could once again be in danger of seeing one of their youth prospects make a move away from the Hawthorns, which would surely upset a lot of supporters.

What’s the news?

According to a recent report from The Athletic, 17-year-old striker Reyes Cleary is yet to sign the professional deal offered to him by the club.

As a result, he is currently “wanted by a number of clubs on the continent as well as plenty in the Premier League.”

Disaster on the cards?

As a product of the Baggies’ youth academy, the teenager has made 42 appearances across their U18 and U23 side, scoring a combined total of 30 goals with four assists provided along the way.

This highlights not just how much of an exciting attacking prospect but also why the club have offered him a professional deal in order to deter other clubs reportedly after him.

Labelled as a “powerful” player by U18s boss Peter Gilbert, Cleary has only made one senior appearance for the Midlands club, which came during their third-round FA Cup defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion back in January.

In terms of his first-team opportunities this season in the Championship, the youngster has only been involved in one matchday squad which saw him remain as an unused substitute in the Baggies’ 1-0 win over Reading at the Hawthorns.

Taking into account Cleary’s obvious attacking talent and the potential he has ahead of him to become a long-term superstar for the Midlands club, it would be a significant disaster from the hierarchy at the Hawthorns to see their young talent not sign the deal they’ve offered him and instead join another club.

It would also presumably have a lot of supporters fuming if the attacker were to follow in the footsteps of some of the previous youngsters to have played in West Brom’s youth ranks only to move on elsewhere.

Having been described as being an “uncut diamond” by U23s boss Richard Beale, Cleary could possibly be persuaded to sign the professional deal offered to him if current Baggies boss Steve Bruce were to give him some minutes in the first team before the end of the current season.

This could be a good step towards convincing the youngster that he has a promising future at the Hawthorns in the first team.

Sunderland: Neil must axe Will Grigg

Alex Neil has no choice but to axe on-loan Will Grigg this summer and shouldn’t offer the Northern Irishman a new contract.

Grigg was offered yet another escape from his Sunderland nightmare in January when he joined fellow league one promotion hopefuls Rotherham on loan until the end of the season.

The striker joined Sunderland from Wigan Athletic just over three years ago for £4m and has only scored eight goals in 62 appearances for the Black Cats.

He has previously been on loan at one of his former permanent clubs MK Dons where his record improved scoring eight goals in 20 appearances.

Despite this, it just hasn’t gone to plan for the 30-year old in a Sunderland shirt and the club could save a lot of money by not renewing his contract. So far he has been costing them a whopping £575k per goal he’s scored.

The club are in the hunt for promotion and if they do go up then players will likely demand big wages thanks to the huge player salary gap between League One and the Championship.

In some ways, it’s a shame to see a player who was once one of the best strikers in the division, during his time with Wigan he won the golden boot in the 2015/16 season, dwindle in the way he has.

He is a promotion specialist having gone up from League One three times during his career, but it looks as though he won’t be involved in any promotion celebrations with Sunderland.

Grigg was signed by former Sunderland manager Jack Ross on deadline day in January 2019 to replace Josh Maja who moved to Bordeaux for £1.3m.

He has failed in the task to replicate Maja’s form, who when he left the Stadium of Light was Sunderland’s top scorer with 14 goals in 24 league appearances that term.

The fact it was a deadline day signing may show that signing Grigg wasn’t originally Sunderland’s plan and may not have happened if they kept Maja.

Despite the Northern Ireland international not doing as well as they would have hoped, it looks like they have finally found their talisman with striker Ross Stewart topping the goal-scoring chart for the Black Cats this campaign with 22 in 44.

He moved to Wearside for just £304k and has now seen his value soar to £450k, proving even more why they no longer need Grigg.

Celtic: Deila struck gold on Ajer

After impressing Ronny Deila on a week-long trial at Celtic back in January of 2016, the Norwegian manager’s decision to recommend that the Bhoys offer Kristoffer Ajer a long-term deal at Parkhead proved to be something of a masterstroke by the 46-year-old

Indeed, after the Hoops paid IK Start £540k for the centre-back’s services the following summer, the 17-year-old did not take long to establish himself as a first-team regular at Celtic Park, making 50 games in 2019/20.

However, it was undoubtedly over his 35 Premiership outings in 2020/21 that the £15.3m-rated defender well and truly cemented his place as one of the best centre-backs in Scotland, helping his side keep 17 clean sheets, scoring two goals and registering three assists, as well as making an average of 1.5 interceptions, 1.2 tackles, 3.3 clearances, 64.8 passes and winning 5.7 duels per game.

These returns saw the Norway international who Neil Lennon dubbed both “outstanding” and “faultless” earn a quite remarkable seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.15, ranking him as Celtic’s seventh-best player in the top flight of Scottish football last time out.

As such, it was perhaps no surprise that a number of Premier League teams were reported to be interested in the 23-year-old – who Alex McLeish once dubbed Celtic’s “Roy of the Rovers” – last summer, before the Scandinavian sensation went on to seal a £14.13m move to Brentford – being awarded a five-year deal on a reported £35k-per-week.

And, while losing a player as talented as Ajer will have undoubtedly come as a gutting blow to Ange Postecoglou, when considering the fact that the Hoops sold the defender for 2517% more than their initial outlay on the Norwegian, it is abundantly clear that Delia struck gold when advising Celtic to hand the centre-back a deal at Parkhead.

Crystal Palace now eyeing "one of the best coaches ever" to replace Glasner

Crystal Palace are now considering “one of the best coaches ever” as a replacement for Oliver Glasner, amid doubts over the Austrian’s future.

Glasner could be set to leave next summer

With Palace winning the FA Cup last season and fighting for Europe this season, it shouldn’t be surprising that some top clubs are eyeing Glasner, with it recently emerging he is being considered as a replacement for Thomas Frank by Tottenham Hotspur.

Manchester United have also been credited with an interest in the 51-year-old, who may now be planning to leave Selhurst Park upon the expiration of his contract at the end of the season.

Steve Parish will no doubt be hoping for a late change of heart, with the chairman confirming he hopes Glasner extends his stay in South London, saying: “We are building a club which I believe is going to be institutionally capable of taking care of itself. We have to keep raising our ambition every year. I’d love that to be with Oliver, but he’s going to make the best decision for him.”

However, Crystal Palace are now assessing potential replacements, according to a report from GiveMeSport, which states Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior is one of the options being considered, alongside Rayo Vallecano manager Inigo Perez and Getafe boss Jose Bordalas.

Rosenior is a particularly intriguing target, however, as he uses the same system as Glasner, and the Strasbourg boss has already been discussed internally.

However, Strasbourg’s owners, BlueCo, have made it clear they want to keep hold of the Englishman in the past, rejecting advances from other clubs, so it could be difficult to lure him to Selhurst Park.

Rosenior could be exciting Glasner replacement

The fact the 41-year-old plays the same system as Glasner is a real bonus, as it may not take him too much time to adapt to life at Crystal Palace, and he has received very high praise from pundit Clinton Morrison, who lauded him as “one of the best coaches ever”.

Although Strasbourg have been on a poor run of form in Ligue 1, failing to win in their last four matches, they remain in a strong position to push for Europe this season, sitting just four points behind fifth-placed Lyon, and their manager has a solid record in France.

Shades of Zaha: Crystal Palace join race for £22m Champions League forward

Palace are looking to sign a new attacker.

ByDominic Lund

Glasner’s reluctance to sign a new contract thus far will be a major concern, but should the Crystal Palace move on in the summer, Rosenior, who led his Strasbourg side to a 2-1 win against the Eagles in November, could be the perfect replacement.

Surely these 2 wonderkids must leave Chelsea if Golovin joins this summer – agreed?

Chelsea fans are very excited about the prospect of Aleksandr Golovin arriving at Stamford Bridge this summer. According to the Sun, the Blues are eager to tie him down to a contract at Chelsea, and it’s easy to see why.

He has bags of potential and class, and his future is undeniably very bright.

The addition of the young Russian star to the Blues’ squad wouldn’t be good news for everyone though.

Breaking into the first team at Stamford Bridge from the youth ranks is already notoriously difficult, as the small army of talented young payers the club currently have out on loan across Europe can attest to.

In Golovin, Chelsea would be bringing one of football’s brightest young talents in, but they may have to accept losing a couple themselves as a consequence.

Here are two players that may be forced to leave the club if Golovin joins Chelsea this summer…

Mason Mount

19-year-old Englishman Mason Mount spent the 2017/18 season on loan with Vitesse in the Eredivisie.

Whilst it took him a while to establish himself as a starter in the Netherlands, Mount’s season can only be seen as a success (he won the club’s Player of the Year award). There was even some, admittedly mild, clamouring for him to be included in an England squad for a friendly.

Mount should now be raring to return to Stamford Bridge to stake his claim for a spot in the first team. The potentially imminent arrival of Golovin though could see the English youngster looking elsewhere once more for playing time, on a permanent deal.

The Bundesliga, which has recently taken to nurturing young British talent by providing more first team action than the Premier League can promise, could be attractive to Mount.

Charly Musonda

Like Mason Mount – and countless others – Charly Musonda spent last season on loan from Chelsea.

The 21-year-old spent 2017/18 with Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic but struggled for game time.

He is certainly a talented attacking midfielder, but may now consider making his name in the Chelsea first team, with yet another obstacle in the form of Golovin in his way, a bridge too far.

It will be an interesting few weeks for him, that’s for sure.
