Adelaide frolic a sign of Australia's growing batting depth

Marnus Labuschagne’s efforts in particular provide hope that Australia can challenge for the title of world’s best team

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide29-Nov-2019A pink ball, a floodlit evening, an evenly grassed Adelaide Oval pitch. These are conditions in which, most of the time, bowlers have prospered. Just this week, Josh Hazlewood described Adelaide as his favourite pitch to bowl on in Australia. Before now David Warner had never reached 50 in a day-night Test; before now, Marnus Labuschagne had never made a first-class century against the pink ball.So there was an enormous amount to admire about the way Warner and Labuschagne took their second opportunity in as many innings to completely dominate Pakistan, the former solidifying his near enough to peerless Test match record in Australia, the latter maintaining a breakout year that not even he can have expected to be quite so supreme. Even if the visitors at times gave a display that might have made a fitting visual accompaniment to John Lennon’s lackadaisical ode, .Strange as it seemed to say at stumps, Pakistan actually did a lot more right in their initial efforts to find a way past Australia’s top order in the rain-bookended first session. Including Mohammad Abbas at the expense of Imran Khan, the visitors pursued a more consistent line around the wicket to Warner, while at the other end Shaheen Afridi found the ideal spot early on against Joe Burns. Having bent a couple of balls back into Burns, Shaheen angled one across to catch a thin edge, and when next ball there was a noise as Labuschagne pushed at it there was the hint of two in two.David Warner celebrates making it back-to-back Test hundreds•AFPHowever, Labuschagne had brushed the ground rather than the ball, and from there Warner and the No. 3 took progressively more control. Warner, having successfully evaded dismissal to balls angled into him – even if they momentarily restricted his scoring – was soon to profit from being able to free his arms against deliveries drifting wider of the off stump, while Labuschagne made a statement by moving well out of his crease to flick Abbas’ first ball to him through midwicket. By the end of the session the pair were motoring along at better than four an over, leaving Azhar Ali with some thinking to do.These first impressions were to be maintained more or less throughout. Warner left the ball considerably more often than usual and took a guard that brought him well and truly outside the off stump. Abbas consequently found himself being dragged wide enough that remarkably few of his deliveries would have gone on to hit the stumps, and as Warner grew more comfortable, he picked off runs with a typical combination of intimidatory running between the wickets – has there ever been a more physically fit Australian opener? – and regular boundaries.”It was probably the best I’ve ever left [the ball] I think,” Warner said. “I think that’s down to the quality bowling of Abbas, leading into this Test, knowing what he’s capable of, I had to be patient as well. I couldn’t play those rash shots, and he really tried his best to hang it out there and dangled the carrot, and I just waited for him to overpitch. That’s one thing in my game I really tried to work hard on, is try to be a bit more patient and really wait for it. the last two games I’ve showed myself I can do that.David Warner enters into top-5 among openers with most Test centuries•ESPNcricinfo Ltd”[Abbas bowling wider] makes it easier to make that decision, whether to get across and leave the ball and wait for that length, and you can still climb into it. If you looked out there, I didn’t really try and over-hit the cover drives, I just tried to punch it into the gaps, and use my timing. At the back end I did throw the bat a little bit, but in saying that I really tightened up and if I can play underneath my eyes it holds me in good stead while I’m out there.”For Labuschagne, the initial movement out towards Abbas was a sign he had thought long and hard about facing him and similar bowlers since their first meeting in the UAE a little more than a year ago. That Labuschagne was able to collect runs through midwicket with something like impunity, from his very first scoring stroke to the one that took him to a second Test hundred in as many innings, was another indicator of how fruitful his time at Glamorgan with Matthew Maynard had been. Added to this were a series of late cuts that challenged bowlers and fielders alike, so precise were their execution.”Marnus fielded for us one or two times in Test matches, then I played against him in Shield games,” Warner said. “I just remember how annoying he was, he never shut up on the field, a bit like me when I was a youngster. But his work ethic is outstanding, he’s got this bromance between him and Smudge [Steven Smith] and it’s really rubbing off on him in the way he prepares.”I’ve had people say they couldn’t believe how good he was, and everyone talks about how he gets starts, but I always said to him the hardest one is your first one, and then it goes on from there. To see him start like he did last game, loud calls, good intent, rotated the strike, I can’t praise him anymore, he’s an outstanding talent.”Marnus Labuschagne reached his second Test century•AFPWarner’s century, celebrated sans bat as he raced towards the Australian team viewing area and brandished his helmet with its coat of arms, was his 17th in Australia, taking him level with Michael Clarke and trailing only Sir Donald Bradman (18), Matthew Hayden (21) and Ricky Ponting (23). Still more impressive, though, was the Warner ratio of innings to centuries in matches down under. With a hundred every 4.06 innings, Warner is second only to Smith (3.92) and Bradman (2.77), leaving the previous best for an opener, Hayden’s 4.66, well behind.”I don’t take any notice to be honest,” Warner said in response to a question about those who say he only performs at home. “A lot of great players in the world haven’t scored many hundreds away from their country, and my job is to score as many runs as I can when I’m at home and away. You don’t go into those away series thinking you haven’t scored hundreds here or anywhere. You’ve got to try your best for the team and for me it’s about getting the team off to a good start and trying to wear down the bowlers.”If there was anything sobering for Australia on an evening when they marched off to stumps with Smith still to bat, it was the fact that the ratios of Bradman and Hayden were recorded in eras when the men in the baggy green were undeniably the world’s best team. For Smith and Warner to peel off centuries with such punishing regularity without seeing Australia to the top of the world anymore than briefly is an indicator of the lack of support they have long had to endure. That’s why Labuschagne’s hundred was, arguably, the more significant of the two innings, providing strong indications that maybe, just maybe, this Australian team is developing a depth of batting talent and performance that will allow them to genuinely challenge India in particular.Justin Langer, Tim Paine and company can be forgiven for wanting to wait and see how the remainder of the summer goes before concluding they have got there, for Pakistan have long struggled to find their feet in Australia. How soon we forget that four summers ago, Peter Handscomb and Matt Renshaw were able to look like world-beaters against a team then led by Misbah-ul-Haq, now the coach. It may well be the case that the pink ball, floodlit evening and evenly grassed Adelaide pitch would be more challenging to Australia in just about any other hands.

£20m+ per year Man City star now holds positive talks to join shock club

One Manchester City star has now held positive talks to join a shock club, according to a new transfer update.

Players who could leave Man City this summer

After a busy January transfer window that saw five new players brought in, Pep Guardiola looks set to shake things up again over the summer as he continues his Etihad rebuild.

A plethora of players are out of contract at the end of the 2024/25 season, and there have been claims on a number of Man City stars being sold.

Kevin De Bruyne

Ilkay Gunogan

Scott Carson

Jack Grealish, who scored against Leicester City in midweek, may well be one who the club decide to cash in on, whereas Bernardo Silva has been linked with a move to PSG.

As we know, Kevin De Bruyne is one of three who can leave and the Belgian has now announced his departure this summer. Releasing a statement on Friday De Bruyne said: “Dear Manchester. These will be my final months as a Manchester City player. Nothing about this is easy to write but as football players we all know this day eventually comes. That day is here – and you deserve to hear it from me first.

“This city. This club. These people … gave me EVERYTHING. I had no choice but to give EVERYTHING back! And guess what – we won EVERYTHING. Whether we like it or not, it’s time to say goodbye … Every story comes to an end but this has definitely been the best chapter. Let’s enjoy these last moments together.”

It looked as if De Bruyne was on course to move to the MLS with San Diego FC, however, now, it looks as if he could be heading elsewhere.

Kevin De Bruyne holds positive talks to move to Saudi Arabia

Previously, De Bruyne claimed he’d be open to the possibility of moving to Saudi Arabia to earn an “incredible” amount of money.

“At my age, you have to be open to everything. We are talking about incredible sums of money for what could be the end of my career. Sometimes, you have to think about it.”

Already on more than £20m per season with Man City, De Bruyne has now held positive talks with Neom SC, a club who play in the Saudi second division. Described as a powerful and extremely wealthy team by Foot Mercato, Neom SC are serious about signing De Bruyne, who also has interest from River Plate, Galatasaray, and Fenerbahce.

After moving to Man City in 2015, De Bruyne looks likely to leave the Etihad after 10 successful years where he has made more than 400 appearances and scored over 100 goals.

Worth more than Delap: Chelsea struck gold on gem with "enormous potential"

The last few weeks of the 2024/25 campaign are vital for Chelsea. The Blues are pushing for a top-five finish, which would see them return to the Champions League.

However, they are currently just outside the top five on 54 points, one point behind Manchester City, who occupy the final fifth spot.

Of course, after the league is done, the Blues will travel to the United States of America for the Club World Cup, where they are one of 32 teams vying for the illustrious prize. It will be interesting to see if they look to make any new signings before the competition starts.

There is a special transfer window open for the first 10 days of June, where Chelsea could make a move for Liam Delap.

The latest on Chelsea’s move for Delap

One of the most intriguing transfer sagas that seems set to develop this summer involves Ipswich Town striker Delap. He has been sensational for the Tractor Boys this term, which has attracted the attention of several elite clubs.

One of those sides is Chelsea, with a recent report from TEAMTalk explaining the situation. The Blues are reportedly ‘very keen on bringing Delap to Stamford Bridge to be the new focal point of their attack’ this summer.

However, they will face competition from several Premier League rivals. Manchester United reportedly lead the race, and Chelsea’s London rivals Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal are also interested in Delap.

The striker has a relegation release clause worth just £30m, which seems like a steal. The 22-year-old has 12 goals and two assists in 31 Premier League games for a side that has just 33 goals this season.

Delap is an exciting market opportunity for Chelsea, and for just £30m, seems a bargain. However, they have an attacker who is worth more than the Ipswich star.

The Chelsea player worth more than Delap

Enzo Maresca is not short of wide options at Stamford Bridge, given the amount of money Chelsea have spent in recent seasons. One of the most exciting at his disposal is arguably Noni Madueke.

Chelsea's NoniMaduekeduring the warm up before the match

It has been an impressive season for the 23-year-old, whose performances have seen him become a full international with England. Madueke, who has recently recovered from a hamstring injury, has managed ten goals and four assists in 32 appearances this term.

Of those goal involvements, ten have come in the top flight, with perhaps his best performance in the same competition. Madueke scored a fantastic hat-trick in a 6-2 away win over Wolverhampton Wanderers at the start of the campaign.

The right-winger is an exciting player, confident in taking on players one-vs-one and unleashing a shot on his stronger left foot. In fact, football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him as someone with “enormous potential”, and Chelsea fans have certainly been privy to that at times during his Blues career so far.

The underlying stats, courtesy of Sofascore, show just how well Madueke has performed this term. For example, this season in the Premier League, the Blues’ number 11 averages 1.7 key passes and the same number of completed dribbles per game.

With that in mind, it might not be a surprise to learn that Madueke is valued even higher than Delap, according to Football Transfers. He is thought to be worth £44.8m, almost £15m more than the Ipswich striker’s relegation release clause.

Chelsea fans must be licking their lips at the thought of Delap and Madueke potentially linking up at Stamford Bridge next season. There is no doubt that the England international is an exciting player, who they will hope can continue to develop into an elite winger.

"Unbelievable" manager with two promotions may replace Ruud at Leicester

An “unbelievable” manager, who has won two promotions to the Premier League, is now on Leicester City’s “list” of targets to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy, according to former scout Mick Brown.

Ruud's time at Leicester coming to an end

Leicester have hardly put up a fight in their bid to avoid relegation, having collected just 18 points all season, and they have taken a significant turn for the worse since appointing Van Nistelrooy, whose record as manager is extremely poor.

The Dutchman has averaged just 0.48 points per match since taking the reins at the King Power Stadium, and it is now looking increasingly likely he will be replaced at the end of the season, with several potential replacements being identified.

Former Southampton manager Russell Martin is the Foxes’ first choice to replace Ruud, and the 39-year-old is believed to be keen on taking over, should an approach be made, while Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is also on the shortlist.

Having led the Saints to promotion last season, Martin could be a sensible appointment for Leicester, but ex-scout Brown has now revealed a manager with two promotions to the Premier League under his belt is also on the shortlist.

Brown told Football Insider: “Ruud is going to be sacked, there’s no doubt about that.

“I wasn’t impressed by Russell Martin in the Premier League, but he was a big reason why they got promoted in the first place. That’s what Leicester are looking for – a manager to guide them back up straight away.”

“There are a few names on their list, Sean Dyche is one I’ve heard, for example. But it sounds like Martin is the leading candidate for it at the moment, based on what I hear.”

"Unbelievable" Dyche could lead Foxes to promotion

David Moyes’ success since replacing Dyche in the Everton dugout suggests the Englishman may not be the right man to lead Leicester’s long-term project, but there is every indication he could be capable of leading them to promotion next season.

The former Burnley boss took the Clarets up in 2013-14 and 2015-16, winning the title the second time around, while he has also received very high praise from former player Kieran Trippier, who lauded the 53-year-old as an “unbelievable manager”.

One thing that is clear is that Ruud will need to be replaced this summer, with former winger Matt Piper recently criticising the manager, while also insinuating some changes may need to be made to the playing squad, given their lack of effort this season.

“This season they are not good enough, there is no fight, there is no determination, there is no want to wear the shirt, there is no confidence.

“Then there is a manager that goes missing in the dugout. There are major things wrong at this football club and it’s been like this for some time. It’s just not good enough.”

Huge Richarlison upgrade: Spurs prepare offer to sign £30m "wrecking ball"

Regardless of what happens in the Europa League and with Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham Hotspur need a massive summer in the transfer market.

From defence to attack, the North Londoners need to dramatically improve their squad to avoid having another domestic season as bad as this one next year.

Fortunately, Daniel Levy and Co seem to agree with this sentiment, as, on top of the near-constant rumours around the manager’s position, we are starting to see stories linking the club to some brilliant players.

In fact, if recent reports are to be believed, the Lilywhites have now set their sights on one of the most exciting strikers in the Premier League, someone who’d be an enormous upgrade on Richarlison, who looks like he could be on the way out as well.

Spurs' striker search

So, before we get to the forward in question, it’s worth looking at some of the other strikers Spurs are supposedly interested in from outside the Premier League, like Jonathan David and Tim Kleindienst.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former is set to be available for free this summer, and with a sensational tally of 25 goals and 12 assists in 47 games this season, the Canadian international would be an incredible addition to the North Londoners squad.

Kleindienst, on the other hand, could cost around £30m this summer, and while that isn’t chump change, it would still represent fair value, as the German international has scored 16 goals and provided ten assists in 32 games this year.

Yet, Levy and Co might prefer to shop closer to home and sign a more Premier League-proven marksman like Liam Delap.

Yes, according to a recent report from GIVEMESPORT, Spurs are one of several teams incredibly interested in the Ipswich Town goalscorer.

In fact, while the likes of Manchester United, Chelsea, Everton and West Ham United are all also keen, the report has revealed that the Lilywhites are now ‘planning to make an offer’ for the Englishman, who now has a £30m release clause in his contract.

It might be a complicated transfer to get done with how many interested parties there are, but it’s one worth fighting for, especially as he’d be an incredible Richarlison upgrade.

How Delap compares to Richarlison

So, if Spurs are able to get ahead of the chasing pack and bring Delap to N17 in the summer, it’s almost certain that, to begin with at least, he’d play second-fiddle to club-record signing Dominic Solanke.

Therefore, he’d either be in direct competition with Richarlison or be his replacement should he be moved on, so how does he stack up to the Brazilian?

Well, the most important metric for a centre-forward is their raw output; in this case, the Englishman comes out comfortably on top.

For example, despite playing for a relegated side, the 22-year-old “wrecking-ball,” as dubbed by Sky Sports’ Lewis Jones, has managed to score 12 goals and provide two assists in 37 appearances, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.64 games.

In contrast, the former Everton star has scored five goals and provided two assists in 20 appearances this season, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.85 games.

Moreover, besides being the more dangerous forward and five years younger, the former Manchester City gem has one other massive advantage over the Nova Venécia-born ace: his fitness.

For example, across his career, the Winchester-born monster has missed just 16 games, and that was down to a single knee injury he suffered last season, which has since not resurfaced.

In stark contrast, the 48-capped Brazilian has missed a whopping 78 games for club and country across his career and suffered from 20 injuries.

Ultimately, while he’s still somewhat raw, it’s abundantly clear that Delap would be a massive upgrade on Richarlison in almost every way, so Spurs should do what they can to sign him this summer.

Mega upgrade on Odegaard: Berta lining up Arsenal move for £100m "machine"

After a week of anxious waiting, today is the day Arsenal could book themselves a place in the Champions League final for only the second time in the club’s history.

However, Mikel Arteta’s men will need to put in the best performance of the season and make amends for their incredibly underwhelming display in the first leg.

In particular, club captain Martin Odegaard will have to show the fans just why he was handed the armband in 2022, as to describe his personal campaign this year as disappointing would be quite an understatement.

The Norwegian has looked like a different, far less effective player for much of it, and there is a chance the club are already looking at their options, with recent reports linking them to a Premier League star who’d be a massive but costly upgrade.

Arsenal transfer news

Given Odegaard’s lacklustre form this year, it’s hardly surprising that, in recent weeks, Arsenal have been linked to a plethora of midfield talents, such as Brahim Diaz and Desire Doue.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The former is reportedly available for around £51m and has enjoyed a decent enough campaign with Real Madrid, racking up a haul of six goals and seven assists in just 2058 minutes of first-team action.

On the other hand, Doue could cost as much as £86m, but with a staggering tally of 13 goals and 12 assists in 49 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain this season, it would be hard to say he wouldn’t be worth it.

Paris St Germain'sDesireDouereacts

However, given the Gunners’ desperation to win the Premier League next season, they may want someone who already knows the league, which is where Morgan Rogers comes into play.

According to a recent report from Football Transfers, Arsenal are ‘firmly in the race’ to secure the Aston Villa star’s signature in the summer, with Sporting Director Andrea Berta said to be ‘a huge admirer.’

However, the report also claims that Manchester United and Chelsea are interested in the Englishman, while another story from March valued him at a whopping £100m.

It would be an incredibly complicated and costly transfer to get over the line, but given Rogers’ immense ability and potential, it is one well worth fighting for, especially as he’d be a massive Odegaard upgrade.

How Rogers compares to Odegaard

The first thing to say is that while Unai Emery has been playing Rogers on the wing at points this season, his most played and undoubtedly preferred position this season has been attacking midfield.

Therefore, were he to join Arsenal for the fees being banded around, then he’d most certainly do so with the intention of starting every game, in turn putting him up against Odegaard – but who comes out on top?

Well, when it comes down to their raw output this season, it’s Villa’s “machine,” as dubbed by The Athletic’s Jacob Tanswell, who comes out on top and quite comfortably at that.

For example, in 51 appearances, totalling 4233 minutes, he’s scored 14 goals and provided 13 assists, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 1.88 games, or every 156.77 minutes.

In contrast, the Gunners’ captain has scored five goals and provided 11 assists in 41 appearances, totalling 3162 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal involvement every 2.56 games, or every 197.62 minutes.

On top of that, the former Manchester City prospect comes out far better when we take a look at some of the other important attacking metrics, such as conversion rate, chances created, and take-ons completed.

Finally, while this isn’t massively important today, the Halesowen-born maestro is four years younger than the former Real Madrid wonderkid, so if Arteta were to bring him in, he might not need to worry about replacing him for the best part of a decade, which could allow the club to focus on other areas of need.

Ultimately, while Odegaard is a talented footballer, Rogers appears to be far superior in most ways, and if Arsenal can sign him this summer, they should do all they can to do it.

Celtic gem seen at stadium bigger than Parkhead with transfer exit close

Celtic are preparing for an exciting summer under Brendan Rodgers, though they may now be resigned to losing one of their most talented young prospects.

Celtic look forward to chance to complete domestic treble

Domestic trebles have become a speciality for the Hoops over recent years, and they will have a chance to complete another clean sweep against Aberdeen this weekend in the Scottish Cup final.

Rodgers was able to soak up the acclaim of supporters after witnessing his side lift the Scottish Premiership trophy last weekend. However, the Irishman knows there is still work to do before the champagne can really start to flow at Parkhead.

Brendan Rodgers

Speaking ahead of the clash, he said: “We’ve had some great performances and results against Aberdeen, but finals are finals.

“I enjoy the occasion, I enjoy the pressures of finals, but we can only really enjoy it if we go in with the right mentality, the right preparation and then we can see where it takes us.”

Coming to the end of a long season, Rodgers will already have one eye on the transfer market as Celtic prepare to strengthen on all fronts to put up another fight for silverware and European progression next term.

Rodgers has struck gold with Celtic star who's worth more than Kvistgaarden

Celtic have hit the jackpot with this star who is worth more than reported target Mathias Kvistgaarden.

1 ByDan Emery May 20, 2025

Blackburn Rovers star Tyrhys Dolan is a target for the Bhoys on a free transfer and could join Kieran Tierney in walking through the Parkhead entrance once the window opens.

Nevertheless, departures will also be expected to make room for new arrivals to settle into life in Glasgow, and one of the Hoops’ most prodigious stars could now be on his way out of the club, per recent developments.

Celtic gem Cummings spotted at West Ham's London Stadium

With his contract set to expire at Parkhead, Celtic striker Daniel Cummings was spotted at West Ham United’s London Stadium on Sunday, a stadium which is bigger than Parkhead, taking in their 2-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest. It has been claimed that a move to the Irons looks imminent for the forward.

The Scotland Under-19 international has been in brilliant form for the Hoops’ B Team this campaign, registering 29 goals in 37 appearances, combining his first-team outings and exploits further down the ladder.

Commended for his “spectacular” finishing by The Young Team, he now appears poised to leave his boyhood club after months of no progress over a contract extension.

West Ham previously tried to sign Cummings on deadline day earlier this year, though they now look to have prevailed in their attempts to bring the clinical poacher to East London.

From a Celtic standpoint, losing another young talent is a sign of the limited pathway to the first team for homegrown stars, but most will acknowledge that this has been coming for a long time.

He's like Isak: Liverpool make approach for "monster" £84m Sesko alternative

Alexander Isak is a striker who has been a key target for Liverpool over recent months, with the Swede certainly likely to be on their radar once again this summer.

The 25-year-old has been a clinical option in the Premier League this campaign, registering 23 goals in his 33 appearances, offering Eddie Howe’s side a key presence in their quest for Champions League football.

He’s also starred against the Reds throughout 2024/25, scoring what proved to be the winning goal against Arne Slot’s side in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

Newcastle United's AlexanderIsakcelebrates scoring their second goal

However, if the Merseyside outfit were to make a move and land the talisman during the off-season, they would have to fork out a pretty penny, with the Magpies demanding £150m for his signature.

Such a figure would likely price the club out of a potential deal, leading to potential alternatives in the market, with numerous players already on their list ahead of the upcoming window.

The latest on Liverpool’s hunt for a new striker this summer

RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko has emerged on Liverpool’s shortlist over the last couple of days, with the Slovenian catching the eye with his tally of 21 goals in his 45 outings.

It was reported earlier this week that the club were ready to enter talks to land the 21-year-old, seeing him as an option to improve the players currently at his disposal.

However, he’s not the only Bundesliga attacker in the sights ahead of the upcoming window, with Eintracht Frankfurt’s Hugo Ekitiké the latest name mentioned for a move to Anfield, according to French outlet RMC Sport.

The report states that the Reds have already made an approach for the 22-year-old, who’s registered 22 goals and 12 assists throughout 2024/25 in all competitions.

It also claims that he’s allowed to leave the German outfit during the upcoming window if anyone matches the €100m (£84m) valuation they’ve placed on his head.

Why Liverpool’s £84m target could be Slot’s own Isak

A striker is evidently a priority for Liverpool this summer, as seen by the recent targets, but it’s pivotal that the hierarchy land the right option for Slot.

Liverpool manager ArneSlot

In the past, they’ve spent heavily on a talisman, as seen with the signing of Darwin Núñez back in 2022, with the Uruguayan costing a club-record £85m.

However, it’s safe to say the move to Anfield has been a disappointment, registering just 40 goals in his 142 appearances on Merseyside – with just seven of which coming this campaign.

Such form has led to links away from Anfield this summer, which will undoubtedly result in a hefty loss on the fee paid for his signature, but could pave the way for a new centre-forward.

From the recent names mentioned, Ekitike would be a better signing than Sesko, outperforming him in numerous key areas when comparing their respective stats.

Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike

The Frenchman would also be the club’s own Isak, being comparable to the Swede by FBref and matching or bettering the figures produced by the Newcastle star in numerous key areas.

Ekitike, who’s been labelled a “monster” by one analyst, has registered more shots and more shots on target per 90 – highlighting the constant threat he poses in attacking areas.

The Frankfurt star has completed more passes and competed more progressive carries, subsequently able to aid other attackers when getting into the final third.

It would be another huge investment from the board, but it’s one that could play a huge part if they are successful once again in the years ahead.

Whilst Isak would be many fans’ main option this summer, Ekitike has proved that he’s capable of being an excellent talisman and possibly the Reds’ own version of the star.

Forget Cherki: Man City also open £42m talks for "one of the best" #10's

Manchester City have now opened talks to sign a £42m attacking midfielder who’s “one of the best” number 10’s in the world, according to a report.

Man City making progress in Rayan Cherki pursuit

Man City have set their sights on a new attacking midfielder this summer, following the departure of Kevin De Bruyne, and their pursuit of Lyon star Rayan Cherki is progressing nicely, with Fabrizio Romano recently dropping an exciting update.

The deal to sign Cherki is now thought to be close, with Lyon expected to ask for a fee of £35m, and the attacking midfielder cannot wait to make the move to the Etihad Stadium.

However, the move isn’t over the line just yet, which means Pep Guardiola’s side are still considering other potential targets, and they have now opened talks over a deal for RB Leipzig star Xavi Simons.

That is according to a report from L’Equipe, which states Simons has been identified as a back-up option for Cherki, should the deal for the 21-year-old fall through, with the Dutchman now expected to leave the German club this summer.

Alongside Ait-Nouri: Man City want "world-class" £67m full-back on the other side

The Blues are keen on bringing in another full-back this summer, despite the fact the deal for Rayan Ait-Nouri is now advancing.

After arriving at Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain for a fee of €50m (£42m), the attacking midfielder’s time with the Bundesliga side appears to be coming to an end, and there is no shortage of interest, with Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal also keen.

Simons could be among the world's best no.10s

Replacing De Bruyne was always going to be a difficult task, with chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak recently stating he believes the Belgian is the best player ever to wear the City shirt: “What Kevin has given to this club, in my view, he is the greatest player to play for this club. I think his accomplishments speak for themselves.”

In truth, it will be very difficult for any player to replicate the 33-year-old’s achievements, but there are some signs the RB Leipzig star could be on a similar level, having been singled out for very high praise by one scout back in January.

That said, the Blues making a move for Simons appears to be contingent on the Cherki deal falling through, and they should also be extremely happy if they secure the Frenchman’s signature, given his goal and assist return this season.

Their new Klich: Leeds submit offer to sign £22m star with a "huge future"

Leeds United are going to be playing Premier League football next season and will have to use the summer transfer window to build a squad that can compete at the top level.

Daniel Farke can look at what one of his predecessors, Marcelo Bielsa, did in the 2020/21 campaign, when the Whites stayed up in the top-flight and finished in the top half.

Marcelo Bielsa

The Argentine head coach helped the club to avoid relegation, and set them on their way to avoiding the drop in the 2021/22 season too, and the players he had at his disposal played a key role in that.

Stars like Kalvin Phillips, Patrick Bamford Rodrigo, and Raphinha may have stolen the headlines, but Mateusz Klich went under the radar with a return of four goals and five assists in the Premier League from a midfield position.

Leeds make first offer for midfield target

Leeds are active in the current summer transfer window to bolster their squad and are reportedly eyeing up a deal for a star who could be Farke’s own version of the Poland international.

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

According to L’Equipe, the Championship champions have submitted their first offer, worth around £22m, to Strasbourg in an attempt to sign central midfielder Habib Diarra.

The report claims that the French side have not yet responded to the bid, but they are waiting to see if any other teams come in with counter-offers, amid interest from clubs in Germany and England.

Meanwhile, the Yorkshire Evening Post has confirmed that an offer has been made, but adds that other targets in that position are felt to be more likely at this moment in time.

Why Diarra could be Klich 2.0

If Leeds can get a deal over the line for Diarra, then Farke could have his own version of Klich in the Premier League next season, because he is a well-rounded midfield star who can impact games in and out of possession.

The 21-year-old talent, who talent scout Jacek Kulig claimed will have a “huge future” in the game, played regularly in Ligue 1 for Strasbourg in the 2024/25 campaign and caught the eye with his displays in the middle of the park.

Diarra played 29 Ligue 1 games or more in each of the last three seasons, which shows that he has plenty of top-flight experience in a major European league, and this term was his best so far from a performance point of view.

As you can see in the table above, his performances in Ligue 1 this season were incredibly similar to Klich’s in the Premier League when Leeds avoided the drop in the 2020/21 campaign.

These statistics show that Diarra could emulate his impact at the top end of the pitch by delivering a respectable number of goals and assists from a box-to-box midfield position, whilst potentially being even more creative when you look at the ‘big chances’ that he created.

The chart above further illustrates the similarities between the two players, particularly when it comes to scoring and creating goals, which suggests that he could be a very similar player to Klich for Farke.

Diarra’s ability to combine defensive work, as he is rarely dribbled past, with his attacking output suggests that he could be a very valuable player for the German boss in the Premier League, as he could impact games at both ends of the pitch.

Leeds have told this flop that he must leave this summer, and the dud must go before Patrick Bamford.

However, the Yorkshire Evening Post did report that other midfield targets are more likely, so it remains to be seen whether or not the Whites will be able to get a deal over the line for this star.
